Counterpart Additionally, non-scifi, best of year is Happy! DRM "manages access" in the same way that Prison "manages freedom".

Yuck, Happy! was gross and disgusting, and yes, it's a fantasy fiction, not a science fiction. Altered Carbon and Westworld are also really well done, just so immoral and disturbing viewing. Why didn't you like The Orville? How would you satirize Star Trek? I didn't like that it's a liberal political soapbox, but the humor is great! Just needs to make fun of liberalism more. Re: What is everyone's favorite scifi this year?Happy was most excellent and did have scifi elements to it. It also got renewed. Otherwise I agree we got us a Golden Age of TV scifi shows and a lot of it is quality stuff. Black Mirror Re: What is everyone's favorite scifi this year?paisley1 wrote:
I'll just quote your list since I 100% agree with it. Re: What is everyone's favorite scifi this year?paisley1 wrote:
I don't like Seth MacFarlane as a screen actor. His voice is OK for the work he has done, but not voice. paisley1 wrote:
I don't know. I don't have an issue with comedy in space DRM "manages access" in the same way that Prison "manages freedom".
http://xkcd.com/488/ Re: What is everyone's favorite scifi this year?First League (outstanding shows both story and production) Counterpart Second League (very good shows) Agents od S.H.I.E.L.D. Third League (average quality) Altered Carbon Fourth League the rest Re: What is everyone's favorite scifi this year?Wizard wrote:
Wizard, you're not alone in your opinion, a lot of people for some reason aren't buying Seth as an actor. I think he's great! I also like how normal and ordinary the dialogue and humor is in The Orville, especially the helmsmen, breath of fresh air how nothing is off limits and nobody takes themselves too seriously. My favorite scifi story of them all would've been Travelers up until Counterpart came out and took the genre by storm, J.K. Simmons really nails it, what a great show! Pyrron, I like how you divided your scifi's into categories. Is Stranger Things a scifi though? I think it's more of a supernatural horror mystery fiction with some scifi elements. Sure, ok. Not sure if I agree where you put Travelers or Altered Carbon. Travelers has a far more enjoyable story to me than Westworld, but without the production value, and Altered Carbon has an enormous budget with exceptionally tight editing, but disingenuous dialogue, a contrived story, and unconvincing acting. As I talk through it, I can see your logic, lol. I would put shows like Colony, Expanse, Timeless, Black Mirror, Sense8, Dark Matter, X-Files, Killjoys, Future Man, and 12 monkeys with your Fourth League category, imho. Also, I don't consider Marvel Universe and DC universe to be Science Fiction but Super Hero Fiction, as with most genetic anomaly stories where 'a character gets super powers from a contrivance and then the rest of the story is a long repetitive action scene based on that contrivance', I feel is more of a subgroup within both Fantasy Fiction and Science Fiction. Whereas a true science fiction, like Star Trek or Stargate, the science drives the show. There is overlap, like Tony Stark though, but for the most part all super hero shows with the exact same premise are in a distinctly different genre, like Jessica Jones, The Defenders, Daredevil, Agents of Shield, Luke Cage, The Punisher, Iron Fist, Inhumans, Runaways, Legion, The Gifted, Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, Black Lightning, Gotham, Krypton, and Legends of Tomorrow, some of which I like, but they're all the same story basically, but not science fiction. Happy! is a disgusting psychological fantasy fiction action series, but definitely not a scifi. What was sciency about it? Nothing. SYFY Channel should be called the Horror Channel because it's mostly supernatural horror fantasy fiction series', and only the Expanse, Killjoys and 12 Monkeys qualify as actual scifi's. Sad. I wish all the supernatural crap would have its own channel, and put all the good scifi back onto SYFY, also change the name back to Scifi not Siffy. I want to check out Oasis and People of Earth. Those look interesting. Re: What is everyone's favorite scifi this year? Not necessarily in this order:- The Orville Re: What is everyone's favorite scifi this year?So I don't have time for anything but SF but here is my top5. Philip K. Dicks - Electric Dreams(not sure if it is going to be continued). Not topnotch but worth a mention in the SF category: Killjoys, Hard Sun, The Orville and Colony. Re: What is everyone's favorite scifi this year?no one mentioned Final Space. Thats a really good show. Re: What is everyone's favorite scifi this year?Final Space is annoying, but you can't stop watching it. The Expanse is back better than ever. Really great stuff. The Crossing turned out to be pretty good. And now we have a new season of Westworld to fuss over. 13 2018-04-23 08:52:23 (edited by HomerS 2018-04-25 08:09:17)Re: What is everyone's favorite scifi this year?Re: What is everyone's favorite scifi this year?Found a few shows I havent heard about here - so THANKS for this thread! ..not sure if its "this year" since it premiered in 2017 and ended season 1 in january (i think) 2018, but I really liked The Gifted - would love to see it renewed. 15 2018-04-24 19:14:55 (edited by scorpius074 2018-12-18 16:34:16)Re: What is everyone's favorite scifi this year?Favorite Sci-Fi Shows (2017-18) The Expanse Honorable Mentions: Killjoys, Dark Matter (prematurely ended), 12 Monkeys, Colony, Philip K. Dick's Electric Dreams, The Crossing, Westworld, Mars, Humans, Star Trek: Discovery, Star Wars Rebels, Timeless, Hard Sun, The 100, The X-Files Can I Have Some Sci-fi To Go Along With Those Fries: Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (Action/Adventure/Superhero Fiction), Legion (Drama/Psychological Thriller/Superhero Fiction), Krypton (Action, Drama, Superhero Fiction), Stranger Things (Supernatural/Horror/Fantasy/Period Drama), Fortitude (Drama/Mystery/Horror/Psychological Thriller), Outlander (Drama/Adventure/Fantasy/Romance/Historical Fiction), The Handmaid's Tale (Drama/Dystopian Fiction) -- Those are just a few of my mixed breed favs, that I consider to be under the umbrella genre of speculative fiction, and I basically wanted to keep my first two lists, for the most part, insulated within the realm of sci-fi. Anticipated Debuts: Consider Phlebas (Amazon), LOTR (Amazon), Another Life (Netflix), Watchmen (HBO), Aeon Flux (2019), Amazing Stories (2018), Away (Netflix), Star Wars: Underworld, The Nevers (HBO), The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance (Netflix), Galaxy Quest (finally!!) Seeing how we're only in Q2 of 2018, my selections are subject to change. 16 2018-04-24 22:23:33 (edited by g371 2018-04-24 22:30:25)Re: What is everyone's favorite scifi this year?Altered Carbon and The Crossing are the winners so far in 2018 Lost in Space (2018) was good too, but ▼Spoiler Re: What is everyone's favorite scifi this year? The Expanse 18 2018-04-27 19:37:58 (edited by kaas 2018-04-27 19:38:22)Re: What is everyone's favorite scifi this year?bum_1 wrote:

Btw, this Nightflyers has rating here just 2.89, probably because the couple first episodes were really bad, but I suffered through them and by episode 9 I would say it's rather watchable show. Re: What is everyone's favorite scifi this year?g371 wrote:
Funny how you mentioned this just after I finished watching the 9th episode. It started off slowly for me also, but it has picked up somewhat as of late. I tend to have a high threshold for bad episodes, but JEEZ, that first episode (early on) was almost unbearable. I don't usually pay mind to the ratings here but on IMDb, it has a lot of negative reviews, and it seems like most of those negative reviews are from disgruntled fans of The Expanse who have a hatred towards Syfy. I mean, I'm not exactly a fan of the network myself, but that spans back over 20 years. I was going to wait until the series concluded before watching it but since they're airing it on a nightly basis, I might as well tag along for the ride. I agree with the notion that this show is like a combination of Solaris, Event Horizon and The Shining. The crew has made some questionable (borderline stupid) decisions, some characters are hilariously horrible, some aren't quite as bad, a few are actually good, and there are some inconsistencies with the story, but overall the show is alright IMO. It's watchable, but if you're looking for GoT greatness right off the bat, you will be hugely disappointed. I haven't read the books, so maybe someone who has will have a different perspective. Apparently, there's a film that came out in '87 that goes by the same name that's based on the short novella. I haven't checked that one out either. I believe this current series is based on the extended novella. Either way, for now, I'll stick with Nightflyers to see where it goes. 23 2018-12-14 08:20:05 (edited by MeDumbDuck 2018-12-14 08:31:48)Re: What is everyone's favorite scifi this year?scorpius074 wrote:
No it isn't, Nightflyers is just a very poor ripoff of 2001 Space Odyssey. I was highly disappointed. (Then again, i'm not sure Martin has ever written anything truly original) Re: What is everyone's favorite scifi this year?MeDumbDuck wrote:
Wrong!! You mean 2001: A Space Shining with the malevolent computer represented by a glowing red eye screaming "Here's Johnny" (or was that Rowan), Hallorann flying the 2093 Plymouth Fury, the lifeboat named RedRum, and Olive Oyl with super-psychic abilities.
