Topic: Discovery / Orville?
Which do you think reflects Star Trek better? I know my own opinion, as you'll find hinted in my posts Which do you think is the spiritual successor to TOS? (Yeah, a lot of you already admit you've never watched it) I vote Orville for the spirit but am am conflicted with Discovery appearing to be a Section 31 show (something I'd love to see) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Section_31

Re: Discovery / Orville?
Orville is clearly more classic Star Trek in look and feel as well as when it comes to storylines and how everybody acts. Discovery just feels like some random space action show with a sprinkle of Star Trek on it. Not necessarily a bad show, but not very Star Trek. Discovery is more like military version of Star Trek. The federation has probably always had pure military ships as well, but Star Trek shows have always displayed diplomatic/explorer type of crews and ships. So they maybe should have named it Federation Battlecruiser Discovery, or something. Also, the Dark looks and feels, Star Trek is supposed to be bright and colorful.

Re: Discovery / Orville?
At this moment, Orville has more of an TNG feel and Discovery hasn't shown it's full potential yet.
...where did I put that rat's ass I could give?
Daemons are benevolent or benign nature spirits, beings of the same nature as both mortals and gods, similar to ghosts, chthonic heroes, spirit guides, forces of nature or the gods themselves.

Re: Discovery / Orville?
Too early to say... I think STD is the better show, but Orville has been a better star trek than Star Trek - at least so far.

Re: Discovery / Orville?
I can't watch The Orville because it feels too much like a badly acted fanfic.

Anyone watched Star Trek Continues - that is the definition of Fanfic but it's done well on a minimal budget Orville is, I guess, Fanfic (McFarlene is a big fan of ST, reportedly) on a big budget This week's reminds me of a TNG ep (won't mention it in case you not seen it yet) Discovery unfolds slowly which keeps you wanting more I enjoy both

Re: Discovery / Orville?
Both! The one is Star Trek (or at least a 2017 version of what Star Trek is supposed to be) and the other is Seth McFarlane. Simple as that. Orville isn't supposed to challange Star Trek. It's Seth McFarlanes take on SciFi. Stop comparing it.

Seth wanted to make the next Star Trek but because they had plans for Discovery they said no. That's why Seth did The Orville. It is Star Trek so yeah... the comparisons are allowed.

Re: Discovery / Orville?
I enjoy that i can watch Discovery in 4K HDR on Netflix, the budget and effort which was put into it is nice and it feels like a modern version of Star Trek. But it's a bit to modern or different to the standard Star Trek so far for my liking and that's why i haven't really connected with the show just yet and dont particular like any character, but that might change in the future tho. I enjoy Orville, as it reminds me of TNG/standard Star Trek which i grew up with. The fanfic kinda vipe might put off some people, i like it as it feels like Star Trek but still makes it different enough to be not a copy.

Indeed. I would much prefer to reserve judgement upon completion of both shows, but even then I'm not sure I want to pit them against one another. The Orville is like the kid brother I never had; a pain in the ass at times, but otherwise decent kid with a good heart. Discovery on the other hand is like the older brother who always has my back and does whatever it takes to keep me safe. The Orville definitely has that "feel good" classic Star Trek vibe from back in the day. It's bright, colorful, doesn't take itself too seriously, and it's unique. Discovery on the other hand is like a part of dark Trek lore that's been looming in the background since the DS9 days. It's finally being "discovered" now for the first time in greater detail, and may very well be the premise of the show, a small part, or this season at the very least. Initial reception based on early info led many to believe that the show would be the television series version of the "NuTrek" movies, but after watching the first three episodes, it's clear to me that Discovery is in a league of its own. And with the potential nod to Section 31, it will definitely pique the interest of any true Trek fan far and wide. I'm an old school trekkie that represents the original series and everything Trek moving forward. I actually saw the '79 motion picture in the theater as a kid before watching any of the TOS reruns on television in the early 80's. I'm not one of those disgruntled die-hard trekkies who refuse to watch anything past Enterprise, or the few who refuse to venture beyond TNG. My house isn't littered with memorabilia, collectibles, apparel, or auctioned studio props; and I don't speak Klingonese, Rihan, or Vulcan neither. I'm just a loyal follower of the franchise who represents all the movies (both old and new), all television series, animated series, literatures, spinoffs, fanfics, history, and origins. These so-called "original die-hard trekkies" who dislike the new movies and refuse to watch The Orville or Discovery (you know, the ones who insist weighing in on every online fan forum in existence) are probably the same ones who were complaining about DS9 not being "Trek enough" because the main focus of the show took place on a Cardassian-built space station (on the backs of Bajoran slaves), rather than a Federation-class starship. I still remember those debates lol. Those types are just set in their ways, and you would probably have a better chance at meeting a real life Ferengi before persuading any of them to commit to anything "Nu." Trust me, I work with a few. I can respect someones negativity towards a show if they atleast made the attempt, but if they're the type to shoot these shows down without even watching a single episode, well, to me that's just ignorant. After all, isn't Star Trek about exploring strange new worlds, and seeking out new life and new civilizations, while keeping an open mind to new possibilities? I have no problems trying out the new stuff. If it's garbage I will call it out without hesitation and then drop it; otherwise if I find it to be decent, I will ride it 'til the wheels fall off. The Orville and Star Trek: Discovery are breaths of fresh air that gives me something to look forward to every week. They're a few of the the reasons why I wake up every Thursday and Sunday mornings with a smile on my face.

Re: Discovery / Orville?
think Orville is giving a big nod to old star trek with a little humour and discovery looks like the dark side of trek what with "BLACK BADGES!!" lol there both well produced

Re: Discovery / Orville?
I like the fact that Orville has stand-alone episodes (like TOS). While Discovery seems to have a longer story-arc through the whole season.

This is what the did with DS9 + B5 - two of my fave shows Episodical is OK but arks are far more rewarding Orville gives me eps. STD gives ark Can't complain about either and as mentioned above - cool to have two decent ST-ish shows @ same time I'm VERY happy - hollywood finally did something for the fans

Well seeing how you're such an avid DS9 fan (kudos for that BTW), you must already know about 'What We Left Behind: Star Trek Deep Space Nine Documentary'. Basically it celebrates 50 Years of Star Trek and 25 Years of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine with a unique, independent documentary from 455 Films, directed by Adam Nimoy and produced by series showrunner Ira Steven Behr and David Zappone. I signed up for the 'Bragging Rights' combo and Quark's RoA tee awhile back. If you haven't already, check it out on Indiegogo.

Re: Discovery / Orville?
Watched 'em all Netflix gave me a few good ones and my torry had the rest Can't remember which particular service I saw this one in but Denise Crosby famously dies first season - I never figured out the reason [Spoiler alert] Space Enuff Space She had sod all airtime, she asked to be replaced with a pair of prop legs. She'd have to go on set every day and all you'd see was her legs so, at her request, they let her go (then bought her back several times)

Re: Discovery / Orville?
This one was very odd I gave one of my friends DVDs of STD + Orville OK - the dude's only got 1+2 STD while 1-4 Orville (bloke has no net so I cut for him) He's loving Orville but a bit cold on STD (bear in mind we ain't actually hit Discovery yet from what he's seen) I'm wondering which is going to be more popular? I'll have a clue after I give my bud 3+4 of STD but ATM it's defo Orville - actually, I can understand this choice as STD is slow-burn while Orville is a quick fun thing As commented above, I completely agree - it's wonderful we've got two HQ shows paying respect to Star Trek [Galaxy Quest is in negotiation as well]

Re: Discovery / Orville?
The Orville reflects the format (episodic), tone (bright), film texture (clear), and crew (connected) of Star Trek more accurately because it was episodic, bright, clear, connected and funny. Star Trek Discovery is in the Star Trek universe so its definitely more Trek but with a foundationally opposite tone (dark), format (serialized), film texture ( Rembrandt), and crew (disconnected), which is not how Trek TV has ever been. As for story and technology, they are both noncanonical from what we've known about Star Trek. Pros and Cons. Meh. Scifi TV has been really stagnant for years, so I'm really happy with both. I like The Orville more though.

So, the s2 ending. ▼Spoiler 7 years ago Kelly back on earth splits up with Seth the day after their first date? So her memory wipe didnt quite work? Her new timeline will obviously mean no more Seth and no more Orville, baby!
