Topic: Modernize frontend?
I really like this website, it's much better in many regards to all of it's competitors in my opinion. The only thing that bugs me is the general layout. I really don't find it appealing. The orange accents are obviously matter of taste, but generally I feel like the stylesheet could be overhauled as it doesn't look modern at all. A nice simple flat theme would suit the site pretty well. On the other hand, sites like trakt or similar overdid their interfaces in such a way that it just feels completely cluttered, Next-episode handled this aspect pretty well imo. So yeah, do you have any plans in this regard?

Re: Modernize frontend?
Thanks Do you have any suggestions on how the website can look more modern without cluttering and overdoing it? I'd love to improve on that, but currently I don't have a better vision in my mind that will keep doing the job as well. I'm open to suggestions though?

Re: Modernize frontend?
Yeah, honestly I'm not a designer myself. I would love to point you in the right direction but I lack the experience to do so. Right now the site feels a bit like Windows XP.

Re: Modernize frontend?
I did do a whole site redesign once, quite a while ago now (wow, 4 years), but it didn't go anywhere. The topic is here if you want to have a read - http://forum.next-episode.net/viewtopic.php?id=7025

Looks better than the current design, however not modern enough imo.

It was 4 years ago, before HTML5 and all that stuff.!

As long as you make it so that users can choose what layout they want, new or old - I dont care either way. Read: I would prefer it as is. But then again I'm just an old git

I'm with you. The current site is fine for me - uncluttered, easy to read and use, loads fast. Although I use trakt, I don't like the design AT ALL.

I agree, however the current stylesheet just makes this site feel old, maybe even unsupported. People like to look at something pretty, myself included.

I'm still open to suggestions on how to make it prettier and keep it clean, simple and functional.

Re: Modernize frontend?
As one that absolutely loathes modern web-design with it's 90% wasted space and 2% content on the screen, I would definitely urge for caution in any redesign. I'm all for a redesign of the site, but it must not be allowed to ruin the functionality. At the very least, it should be thematic so one could choose the 'old' theme if the new one's rubbish.

Re: Modernize frontend?
Yeah i too really dislike modern web-design and many sites are just horrible to look at and use these days. I like how this one looks and is laid out, i use another one that looks even older in design. It is perfect. Fast and snappy and everything just works and is easy to find and see. Modern designs are often just a waste of bandwidth and processing speed and as i said horrible to use and look at.

Re: Modernize frontend?
It comes as no surprise to me that most users, or at least the ones who speak up about this topic don't really care for a redesign or just website aesthetics in general. Otherwise, they would most likely not have chosen this website as their main site. I just think that many people are really turned of by the very, lets face it, old look and feel of the current site and instead choose something more appealing (like trakt, even though, as stated, I don't like their bloated design and UI/X one bit neither). In order to a) open up the site to a broader audience (designophile, what most people on the www are), and b) not annoy current/older users of this site, I'm proposing to mainly work with CSS updates, with minor HTML edits where applicable (for both old and new design). This also allows you to easily serve both stylesheets with a simple config toggle. The UI of the site is perfectly fine, just the general look and feel needs an overhaul in my opinion. How exactly to do these changes? Once again sorry, can't really help you on that matter. I'd hope there is somebody who has a hand for these things here that may help you, a coder is not a designer in most cases. Are you talking about them big bootstrappy/responsive themes where you scroll, which are used to present something? Such designs aren't even applicable to a webservice like this one, and the reason they are the way they are right now is because a) the broader audience likes it (apparently), b) they are great for all devices, c) scrolling > clicking, especially on touchscreens and d) the visitor gets guided through the presentation. Offtopic though, as that is not what this site needs in the first place.

Re: Modernize frontend?
I agree with everything you're saying. We need a good designer to pitch in and draft some visual changes that will modernize the look and boost the appeal without compromising functionality or bloating the UI.

IMO for use with my tablet or phone the existing design works just fine. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I agree, so why mess with what works. So many other app UI's don't.
