Re: the Books vs. the Show
finished finally book 4. if the show has been rocky on season 3 i have no idea how they will make book 4 look interesting, since i think book 4 was more like a filler.

I started book 5 and am slightly confused. does book 5 go a bit back on events that happened in book 4?

short anwser:
longer anwser: events in book 5 and 4 happen at the same time, just different characters. Only in the last parts of the fifth book events will go little farther. and book 4 may seem like filler because there may not have characters you like. And for me also, it wasn't as good as others, but the fifth one was a good one.

did you not read the last chapter? book 4: Chapter 46: MEANWHILE, BACK ON THE WALL . . ▼Spoiler Hey, wait a minute!" some of you may be saying about now. "Wait a minute, wait a minute! Where's Dany and the dragons? Where's Tyrion? We hardly saw Jon Snow. That can't be all of it. . . ." Well, no. There's more to come. Another book as big as this one. I did not forget to write about the other characters. Far from it. I wrote lots about them. Pages and pages and pages. Chapters and more chapters. I was still writing when it dawned on me that the book had become too big to publish in a single volume . . . and I wasn't close to finished yet. To tell all of the story that I wanted to tell, I was going to have to cut the book in two. The simplest way to do that would have been to take what I had, chop it in half around the middle, and end with "To Be Continued." The more I thought about that, however, the more I felt that the readers would be better served by a book that told all the story for half the characters, rather than half the story for all the characters. So that's the route I chose to take. Tyrion, Jon, Dany, Stannis and Melisandre, Davos Seaworth, and all the rest of the characters you love or love to hate will be along next year (I devoutly hope) in A Dance with Dragons, which will focus on events along the Wall and across the sea, just as the present book focused on King's Landing. - George R. R. MartinJune 2005 i recommend reading the entire book next time while i am here. book 4 is brilliant. (there will be spoilers)
▼Spoiler Cersei going mad, Jamie reinventing his entire life, littlefinger controlling the Vale, Samwell traveling to Bravos, Arya starting her killer education, the Iron men choosing their new king and going to war, and, the Martells planning their cmplicated and slow revenge on the lannisters! how can anyone say it is boring? ad it up with book five and we get the most explosive part of "a song of ice and fire" yet:D
Drake: Are the restraints really necessary? Kellogg: Archer broke both Wu’s arms. While shouting “Woo!” Archer: Happy accident.

Re: the Books vs. the Show
For me they get boring as the books go on because characters that I liked and thought were interesting keep getting killed off, and more and more lesser characters that I find completely uninteresting and boring get more attention. (ie stannis, the ironborn and martells) could not care less about them ▼Spoiler At least Tyrion, Dany, and Arya are still around so far, if he gets around to killing them off I'll probably be done with the series

So... jaquen killed the tickler in harrenhal. possible consequences regarding:
? I think this was a pivotal event for Arya, and I will be sad if DnD decide to skip it.

actually no i am listening to the audiobooks, since it's the only thing i can really do while i'm mowing the lawn and it's the "only spare time" i have to "read books" and yes i can say book 4 was boring when to compare with 1-3 and 5th one i'm currently somewhere in the middle. altho i have to say so far Daenerys storyline pisses me off the most. hes constant bitching about "my people" is getting on nerves.

in all seriousness, this is not a bad idea. ▼Spoiler maybe the black and whites are behind everything, trying to bring the gift to all of westeros through white walkers and dragons, that would be an interesting turn in the pretty girl chapters to come also, the following link contain spoilers for all books etc http://www.reddit.com/r/asoiaf/comments … had_about/ but it's something that, imho, fits.

I think that leaves a lot of questions.
▼Spoiler Would that not mean that everyone could come back as white walkers? So nothing would change only they would be ice zombies? What would happen when winter ends? The others got strong enough magic to hold back summer to make it eternal winter? It also leaves the question about the thing that helped Bran.

Re: the Books vs. the Show
I finally finished book 5. So in my opinion book 1, 3 and 5 are the best. 2 and 4 are not so good. So in the evening i was in a birthday and i met 2 hardcore SoIaF fans. We discussed a little about the books and they gave me an interesting though. Aparently in the books (seems i have missed it) there are small hints that
▼Spoiler Jon Snow is the third Targaerian. He is actually not Eddard Starks bastard, but the son of Eddards sister Lyana and whatshisname Targaerian king. That king Robert misunderstood that Lyana was raped, but actually they loved (lyana and that Targaerian king) each other. If this would prove true in the future books, this would be so much awesome.

Actually this rumour is being spread around the forums of SoIaF long time now and it is said that Martin had this idea at first but won't use it after all because of these rumours and because fans are taking it for granted. ▼Spoiler Some also say that he killed off John to piss off those who think for sure that Jon is Lyanna's and Rhaegar's son. We'll learn in the next book about that though. Maybe he's alive

Re: the Books vs. the Show
Well many characters in those books have been killed off. Especially those we like. Yet many have lived thru even more grivious wounds that
▼Spoiler Jon did take. Somehow there is in my mind that Jon did visit amourer before he went off for duties that day and there was a mention of chain mail shirt. He did get wounded from the neck tho.

So, I started reading the first book...am at the point where Jon says bye to Arya and is heading to the Wall with Benjen. Is it just me or is the book not especially well written? I mean, story-wise it is interesting...but as a work of art it seems lacking as a piece of literature. The show definitely breathes a lot of life into the characters. -Rob

I am often amazed when people seem to latch onto a particular series of books and they become HUGE, when they aren't written well at all. I mean, look at the Harry Potter books. Easily one of the most popular series of books ever written, yet not at all well written.

Re: the Books vs. the Show
Almost every interview I see with GRRM he mentions how he's worried about when the shows catch up with and surpass his books so far. At the rate he writes they will indeed overtake his books in the next 3 seasons or so I bet. I hope the show creators can keep the world alive with great story/action with GRRM consulting alone, with no written books to work from. I also hope I'll still enjoy future books he'll release despite the show possibly derailing from a lot of his character plans.

Although i'm not an expert, i have to say i really enjoyed the books storywise and how they were written. Martin uses some smart techniques keeping the reader focused on the plot. Also i really like the way he describes the backround and the scenes that the events take place. But the thing i like the most is the way he deals with the characters' thoughts in their PoV. And i have to say it again, i'm not an expert or something like this, just a casual reader who happens to love ASoIaF.
