Re: Torrent Discussions
I let my account expire, had terabytes of uploads and downloads with 1.3-ish ratio... Started using kickass.. Don't have to feel sorry if I can't upload to 1.2 ratio...

Re: Torrent Discussions
For us who are not in a hurry to get everything asap, it is a good place. Think about this, you download stuff 10-ish hours after its release. How fast you can upload to 1:1 ratio? It takes less than 5 minutes to dl stuff for me so what is the hurry. I put dl's going when I get home, change my clothes and everything has downloaded already.

Re: Torrent Discussions
Well, you must be lucky, because most times when I use kickass uTorrent doesn't download the files at max speed. Far from it. I dunno, maybe it's my shitty connection, maybe it's because I'm downloading unpopular things. Anyway I'm not complaining, because I'm using mostly publichd.se for new releases and even though it's also a public trackers the speeds are much better.
Re: Torrent Discussions
But if NSA is reading this the conversation is purely hypotethical.

of course, just a thought exercise.

Re: Torrent Discussions
He probably meant kickasstorrents. It's a public tracker with mostly shitty download speeds.
Trackers have nothing to do with the speed. Trackers are not the ones sending you the file.
Once your client sent the announce, it's all about your speed and most importantly, the speed of the few seeders (out of the many) sending stuff to you.

Re: Torrent Discussions
Yeah yeah, but how many good seeders visit public sites and support their torrents?
Depends what you're looking for. If you're in the "need the 720p version of that show 2 minutes after it aired", I suppose it won't be spectacular anywhere. After that, like I said, if you have a speed problem, the trackers have nothing to do with it.
(Reading you, there might be a confusion between tracker and sites. But either way, neither have anything to do with the speed you get after you got the torrent itself).
Anyway... I usually get my stuff (show wise) the next day so propagation is already done and I get it in minutes. Never saw the point of private sites and trackers for shows. They usually get available between 10minutes and a few hours. Getting them the next day also gives time for PROPERS to get out too (if there's a glitch in the first version).
So in the end, you use the site that suits you best... as for the rest.

Re: Torrent Discussions
I don't get it. How can it not be related? You don't download stuff from some magical place in the Internet, but from other people. If it's a shitty torrent site people don't care about seeding (or limit upload in their torrent clients) and people with best Internet connections stay away. So you're left mostly with leechers and people with poor upload capabilities. Sure, it's often a problem to download at max speed right after the release even it's a private tracker, but after an hour or two the situation usually stabilizes.

Magic words in bold.
If it's a shitty torrent site people don't care about seeding (or limit upload in their torrent clients) and people with best Internet connections stay away.
The site itself doesn't have anything to do with the speed or even the seeding. It's just there for someone to post the magnet link (PirateBay) or the torrent itself (others). The rest is between the original seeder and the trackers within the torrent he made.
The trackers that are within the torrent file may not have anything to do with the site. Example: http://kickass.to/masters-of-sex-s01e08 … #technical
Notice that there's no such thing as a Kickass tracker. Those are generic trackers that people put by default.
The seeder sends a ping to those trackers warning them that he has the file, the leechers ping those trackers to get the seeders address...
And voilà... the rest is between the seeder and leechers.
For the same torrent posted on one or the other site, the leechers will be the same ones.

xrnzaaas: Another thing to consider with using torrents:
(as related to me by a friend of a friend of a friend - never of course, used by me),
The higher the Seed number, the better chance you will be able to get the file, however --- the seed number also has nothing to do with the actual download speed, only it's availability.
As others pointed out, speed is totally subjective to the individual torrent process.
Who has what portion of the file, and how fast your connection is, and how fast their connection is, will determine the DL times. I'm saying that the torrent with the most seeds isn't necessarily the torrent that will get you the file the fastest.
A great example is, that I (er, my friend^3), just started using Kickass a month ago. To try it out, for one popular TV show's episode, the most obviously popular and/or trusted version, (distinguishable from the others by file size), was selected, and then EVERY torrent for that file was marked and the files downloaded. Usually what was displayed by Kickass a half day after airing, was one or two files with a torrent having over a thousand seeders, several with hundreds, and a few with 50-100 seeders. Again, all were selected, and then the DL time was watched. This was repeated for several shows over a couple of weeks.
Interestingly enough one of the previously unfamiliar UL"er always had the fasted DL time. While several UL'ers had one or two thousand seeders, this one that typically had 200-400, but always DL'ed first. Sometimes by a good margin. And it was noted that this UL'er issued torrents for almost all the shows being DL'ed each week.
Looking at the data, it became obvious that this one UL'er, (and/or several of their followers), had fast connects with respect to my location. So now only that UL'er is selected and the files are acquired with the least fuss and much sooner than if the Highest Seed torrent is used.

Not good enough... in what way? TV shows not listed? Not enough seeds? ?

If the quality available for free online isn't good enough...you could always pay for the bluray yourself and upload it for everyone else...
