Topic: Helix
Helix
Helix is an intense thriller about a team of scientists from the Centers for Disease Control who travel to the high-tech research facility, Arctic BioSystems to investigate a possible disease outbreak, only to find themselves pulled into a terrifying life-and-death struggle that may hold the key to mankind's salvation or total annihilation. However, the lethal threat is just the tip of the iceberg, and as the virus evolves, the chilling truth begins to unravel. The pilot was really good... first and foremost the show isn't dumb and it doesn't treat the viewer like an idiot. To be honest the only questionable scene in the 2hr pilot was the but it wasn't a big thing. The setting is nice, the cast is solid (plus there are two smokin' hot actresses posing partially as eye candy), more than enough conspiracy to keep things going... ▼Spoiler I especially liked the part about Hiroshi being already "altered" Can't wait for the next episode™.

Re: Helix
Third episode is already out btw. I quite liked as well. Setting is good, plot is good, cast is good. Quite fast paced so I don't get bored. Syfy not being shite for once - I approve!

Yeah, I've noticed it after I've created this topic. It was very good as well... really no complaints with this show so far which is unlikely for me, because I always find something to bitch about.

Re: Helix
Haven't watched episode 3 yet. Epi 1&2 was fun and interesting throughout, but early on I found myself feeling like I knew where everyones allegences lay, what was going on with the virus, and felt no sense of 'oooo, what's coming next'. Waaay too obvious throughout, with far too many visual, music, and speech overt allusions. There's only two points of mystery for me:
▼Spoiler Evil asian science guys background, and what will happen when the people the soldier called for turn up. As to the charactors:
▼Spoiler I don't remember any charactors name, to me they are: evil asian scientist, soldier guy, the evil marsian water villian from doctor who (only less easily transmitted), human lunch leader, and everyone else is just human lunch. Fun and interesting, will keep watching, but I already hope it only runs for, was only ever planned to run for, one season. [edit] Just finished episode 3
▼Spoiler Curious what Ms CPs scar is about. No surprise they blew up the comms. I am suprised the fatties going to be an idiot and keep stuff from human lunch leader, she's probably swooning over soldier boy. I'm highly disappointed about 'is it or is it not a dream sequence', I thought they taught people to write better than that in high school. All in all I've already gone from 'fun and interesting' to 'meh'.

Just watched the first three episodes.... Am i the only person who can see the huge holes in this?? As if any govenment would send just 5/6 people to sort this out, there would be hundreds of soldiers, doctors, nurse's, proper quarantine procedures, etc, etc, And they would just impound computers and arrest other personel for withholding information, especially in that kind of situation, secondly there would be round the clock comunication even if that meant flying helicopters in and out everly hour or what ever to keep in touch. really, really, bad, i'd give it 3/10!

Re: Helix
Also a facility like this would be big news and governments would want to know what's going on there. The facility may be in "international territory" but the big firm financing the operation isn't. Too many loose ends like that to keep me engaged. Nice try, but I hope if finds an audience so that SyFy will keep trying. I do enjoy many of their efforts at doing science-fantasy and comedy.

Re: Helix
The only debatable thing in my opinion is that whether in the real world such a big private installation would be allowed to be created... if yes then I think the rest makes sense, because the CDC folks haven't had a chance to report anything yet and the show suggests that a very powerful company or even a country is behind the illegal experiments.

Re: Helix
Is this the arctic, or Antarctica? Because there is no way that base could be in the arctic, in the arctic there is no land mass to support its multiple basement levels. And if this is Antarctica and it is 'international territory' it's still covered by treaties and international law, and any bases are covered by the law of their origin countries. If it's the arctic, then yeah I suppose it's in international water or something, but then the base itself is highly impractical if not impossible. But yeah, it's a tv show. About what is slowly become a zombie virus. The practicality of the setting is hardly the biggest issue.

Re: Helix
That's why I like n-e website. Without this discussion I wouldn't have discovered this great show. Thank you! Of course as a sci-fi it may have some unrealistic concepts but frankly nothing I saw in the pilot made me skeptical enough to start nitpicking.

Actually what they show is how real world CDC officers work. If there is report of a new emerging disease they will send a team of maybe 2-6 people there to assist and advise the local doctors government s and healthcare officials. They get so many things right (except the BSL4 suits, those in the show are BSL3+ suits) the atmosphere, the working conditions and also that more often then not...often experts have just no clue whats going on. There are few things i find wrong like the "moving virus" but as a person working in a bio lab i find it nice. Also the whole idea of the disease itself. That it compells people to spread it. Wonderful! syfy has done it...i mean what could go wrong?

Re: Helix
Woah, episode 4 was quite eventful. ▼Spoiler Did expect Peter to "die" (unless he makes a remarkable recovery ), but not Doreen. I wonder if Jordan's tumor also means she'll die soon, especially since she has a guest star status on the show. Hiroshi's storyline was less interesting up until the last scene in which he encountered one of the infected. Plus more details about Julia's past - nice addition.

Re: Helix
Sofar this has been really good show, i really agree with latitude, some ppl seems to forget this is scifi, it would be quite boring if all shows were TOO realistic, this has a lot of potential, cant wait for ep 5

Re: Helix
Remember the episode of X files when a prehistoric bug infected peoples brains and made them homicidal? This show reminds me that episode
