They weren't dead the whole time at all, everything on the island happened in real life, the only herring were the flashes in the final series, that occurred after they all died basically at the end of their life whether on the island or not.
It was pretty much spelled out, not sure how people are still confused by it.
If you don't believe it, one of the writer or producers posted an explanation shortly after it aired....I think it was even linked to in the NE forums.

haha...no I don't mean to be mean towards anyone 
I know one or two things about making meaningless posts myself lol - mostly done after a few sharp ones to many resulting in a nice cleanup the day after!
However that not being the case here and I know some people can't help themself but being a postwhore(!) some posts are truly superfluos or simply meaningless in it's own context. Anyways I dare you to make sense of the post made by the mighty nivalis:

It's hard to comment on someone's pointless post without adding one of your own. 
By the way I also think it's rude to misspell other people's nicknames. I know mine might not be the easiest one to remember, but there's always copy-paste at your disposal.
I would really support creating a celebs category on this forum... at least I wouldn't have to get angry after seeing posts about nothing that unnecessarily bump old tv show threads (and get me excited about new Lost projects ).
