Vikings follows the adventures of Ragnar Lothbrok the greatest hero of his age. The series tells the sagas of Ragnar's band of Viking brothers and his family, as he rises to become King of the Viking tribes. As well as being a fearless warrior, Ragnar embodies the Norse traditions of devotion to the gods, legend has it that he was a direct descendant of Odin, the god of war and warriors. - History Channel

Slow start on the first episode but nice settings to build up on.

Biggest doubt comes from the creator himself... who created Camelot. But he did create The Tudors too (that I didn't watch nor care) so it's not like he's always missing the mark. smile

2 episodes are out. Second one was preaired online. Both available elsewhere of course smile

Second episode went faster than the first one for me. It's not epic but it's going well so far.

I can only find one episode and a behind the scenes

Re: Vikings

I've watched both. As an archaeologists it's hard to be impressed. The Thing and the procedurals was like taken out of the textbook, with all the references to the laws, but it sounded stiff and forced.

..but the worst of all? They dumbed the vikings down to not knowing of England (the west) or the means of navigation. I mean, come on! That's just plain stupid.

Not just the Spanish maine my love. The entire ocean. The entire world!

Re: Vikings

I liked it quite a bit actually.

i don't care one tiny bit, if they dumbed down the vikings or if it's not 100% historicly correct, aslong as i feel entertained while watching it and that i did. Nonetheless it was a bit slow at times but still more than interesting enough to continue watching it for now.

It is set up in 793 something wich does match with the beginning of the Viking Age on the England side (if you take into account how history is teached and not necessarily the real one).

So while the little gimmick of the sun and all is obviously far-fetched, the general idea is not that far in the periodic.

At least, as a non-archeologist, that's the way I see it in a 5 minutes read. Having your experience, I suppose I would have a very different point of view. smile

They never do it right anyway so... It's like saying that Colombus discovered the american continent. Vikings were coming here way way before him. But since nobody cared...

Re: Vikings

A big problem with that period is the scarcity of hard evidence of who did what, how and why. For example, more work on the Basque (and other) Atlantic fishermen indicates that these guys may have been chasing the cod all the way to North America before the Vikings got there. These fishing folk considered this knowledge to be a valuable trade secret and left few records of it. But it is becoming clear that seamen long ago figured out how to handle high seas navigation. We often don't know how they did it (especially the Polynesians) but they obviously did it. Therein lies the problem, finding the "how."

Re: Vikings

The gimmick of the sun-stone is found in the sagas, but we haven't found any hard evidence of it yet.  As to that, the whole show is mostly based on sagas, and because of this it is more fiction than real history. I'm not sure that I like the fact that most of the viewers might not know this, and take a lot of the show as actual history. The fact that it is aired on History Channel might substantiate this even further.

I'll just leave it at that. A show based on close-to-fairytales, rather than close-to-history. I'll leave my archaeologist-eyes behind, and try to enjoy it. But I might just wait for the whole season to air before I do.

Not just the Spanish maine my love. The entire ocean. The entire world!

Re: Vikings

and yet there is a strong belief that all myths and sagas have a real life background.
I have enjoyed those 2 episodes so far, and i laughed my ass off when those vikings murdered those poor monks.
as to historical backing i like that they at least try to stick to some parts of it. at least what wikipedia writes.

"Judgment Day is inevitable."

Re: Vikings

Well, so far, the only thing remotely historically accurate is the attack on Lindisfarne in 793 AD.

The use of sagas as (pure) historical sources is of the past. Remember that they were written down several hundred years after the supposed events. Harald Fairhair was according to the sagas the first king of Norway, and the one who united the whole country in the late 9th century - this is history class curriculum at childrens school. Although in fact, there is no evidence of his existence (yet). There are also several aspects of his saga pointing to it being made up.

The sagas is mainly thought to reflect the life and lifestyle of those who wrote it and their period - which is the 12th century.

That article only caught my eye because of the show btw smile.

Anyway - it is nice to see something on the history channel I want to watch. Too bad it is not proper history, although considerably closer than "Ancient Aliens" or "Pawn Stars".

When I first got History channel at home they were still in their Nazi phase and I loved the channel, now though... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=utDHcbiOfKY

Re: Vikings

Was there anything from the sagas in the first episode?

Only thing i could see was that he had a connection with Odin.

16

Re: Vikings

There were some recent news stories about the discovery of a sun stone in a Viking tomb and that scientists believe they have found out how the thing actually works as a navigation device. There is a lot of ancient tech that has been lost to history, but becomes real when some bit of it is finally dug up and reconstructed.

Re: Vikings

Very good pilot... I enjoyed it and I didn't mind they went easier on blood & sex than in Spartacus series. big_smile The main characters are likeable (btw, Ragnar looks like Jax from SoA big_smile), it doesn't look cheap and has beautiful scenery, the Norse mythology is always something new... definately stays on my watchlist. smile

PS. The opening theme is fantastic - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E8UZrJFIlpU

yes. altho the ending of episode 3 has a great promise for episode 4 :d

you do know that history has been written by the winners and rewritten several times by the monks, so what is "proper history"?
For all that matters Ancient Aliens people have it correct. So far what i have seen in that show do not point into something unbelivable.

It sure has, but that fight on the beach looked really weak. I wouldn't want this to become the next Spartacus with all the main cast members doing slow-motion leaps and other insane moves, but they should work on improving the action scenes.

well to be honest Spartacus is cool in it's own way. In my opinion.
And since Vikings is according to Vana more of a saga than "real history" and is not running on nationwide tv channel, i would not expect grammy worth acting there. Just enjoy Norse mythology, some history and beautiful scenery.

Whaaaaaat???

Cant say I have watched much of the show, but from what I gather so far the show is basically: "This happened, we cant explain it, obviously aliens!!!" and "Look at that weird part of that painting, obviously a spaceship!!". "Look at that - it is weird! A cultural oddity? No no no, aliens!"

23

Re: Vikings

you obviously watch a different Ancient Aliens.
this is the best part of this show.
They always say. This might be aliens. Maybe there were aliens. they never say things like yes those were 100% aliens.
