Topic: The Americans
The Americans (2012)
The Americans is a period drama about the complex marriage of two KGB spies posing as Americans in suburban Washington D.C. shortly after Ronald Reagan is elected President. The arranged marriage of Philip (Matthew Rhys) and Elizabeth Jennings (Keri Russell), who have two children – 13-year-old Paige (Holly Taylor) and 10-year-old Henry (Keidrich Sellati), who know nothing about their parents’ true identity – grows more passionate and genuine by the day, but is constantly tested by the escalation of the Cold War and the intimate, dangerous and darkly funny relationships they must maintain with a network of spies and informants under their control. Complicating their relationship further is Philip’s growing sense of affinity for America’s values and way of life. Tensions also heighten upon the arrival of a new neighbor, Stan Beeman (Noah Emmerich), an FBI agent. Stan and his partner, Agent Chris Amador (Maximiliano Hernández), are members of a new division of Counterintelligence tasked with fighting against foreign agents on U.S. soil, including KGB Directorate S illegals, Russian spies posing as Americans. I'm sure I found about it here somewhere but couldn't find it. If it does exist, feel free to zap this post. It's a 1 hour+ show but although there some longing moments, it's interesting. FX Promo 1

Re: The Americans
I thought it was really boring. The worst FX series I've seen to date. There was absolutely zero tension and the premise was quite laughable. Couldn't even make it through the first episode, and I tried twice. Pass!

Re: The Americans
Mediocre pilot, but to be fair I didn't like the pilots of SoA and Justified that much as well so I'll give it a few more episodes before making a final decision.

Re: The Americans
It started out yawnish (and those accents.....), but it got better when you understood that it's more drama than espionage. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Also the use of In The Air Tonight was quite nice (which changed into hilarious). mclame wrote:The worst FX series I've seen to date.
Unsupervised and Anger Managment, those are horrible.

Why?

Re: The Americans
It shows promise. The USSR was falling apart in the 1980s, and it will be interesting to see how that is played out in this show. The KGB general made reference to some of the problems, but not the most important ones (the collapsing economy and growing corruption.)

Re: The Americans
I watched this show a couple days ago and thought it was okay. In my opinion, the background music on the show was so extremely annoying, it distracted me from the show. But I will keep watching this show and give it a chance because it is new and the idea hasn't been on a tv show before (that I'm aware of), so I find it interesting. Whether or not it will keep my interest.....depends on future episodes.

I had completely wiped Anger Management and Unsupervised from my memory. "Thanks" for bringing those images up... Maybe my expectations were wrong, it was a drama and I was expecting a spy thriller. I don't mind drama, but this one was just lacking in intensity IMO.

Re: The Americans
Keeps me interested and engaged, I'm sticking to it. It fixed the flaws from the pilot and is putting its strength on the pros.

Re: The Americans
The pilot was a yawn fest, atleast in the first 30 minutes, after that it got better. I shouldn't have watched it right after Suits and Spartacus. It felt like a sleeping pill after that. Maybe i'm gonna check out ep 2, coz the last 10 mins were not that bad.

Re: The Americans
Sorry if this was posted twice, I don't know what happened, but my message is that I thought episode 2 The Clock was pretty good. I like this show and I'll keep watching. The show can go in many different directions, so it's keeping me interested. This show and "The Following" on Fox are two of my favorite shows this season.

Re: The Americans
It shows a lot of promise to be sure. Don't watch it if you're tired and not paying any attention, then you wont be able to get through the first 20 minutes. It gets better though, I'm looking forward to the next ep.

Re: The Americans
This show is a good example of understanding its potential and going in the right creative direction, unlike Last Resort or The Following. Only hoping it won't share the fate of Terriers and Lights Out.

Re: The Americans
It's "Mad Men" for the 1980s. While advertising is out there and hard to ignore, the last decade of the Cold War was pretty busy in the espionage sector. A lot of the details didn't come out until the Soviet Union dissolved in 1991 and for a few years you could buy access to the Soviet archives and many former KGB operatives were willing to talk for cash and immunity. The FBI never really recovered from discovering how thoroughly they had been schooled by the KGB.

Re: The Americans
Ok i have to admit that the show got better. Not watching it right after suits or spartacus helped tho.
