It's steadily gotten worse over the years. Didn't develop their characters enough, like Tom Shayes. This season, Ellen is after a privatized American military company, like 24 season 7. Already bored by it.
Season 4 had a very slow start but it's picking up. I'm still not sure how good it really is - the finale will inform a lot of my opinion about that - but it is a far throw from the brilliance of season 1, that is true.

Re: Damages
So, season 4 done, time for a little rant about what I think is wrong with the show. Some of this pissed me off already at the beginning of the season. For somebody who tried cases against three huge companies already and who was followed / had her phones tapped / were threatened / were in imminent life-threatening danger is Ellen Parsons incredibly naive and takes no precautions what-so-ever. It's one thing for her (or Patty) not to anticipate their phones being tapped and the witnesses to be in danger in the first season, but it's been a pattern in the show and this time I just found it infuriating. (And no, "we're just starting the case and no one knows what we're doing" is not an excuse. Ever since they killed off that awesome PI guy in season 3 it's been going down hill.) But my biggest issue really is with Ellen as a character. I've been thinking a lot lately about how most TV shows culturally implant this idea of "being good at a job = badass = sympathetic" as a matter of course. Patty might be a cold-hearted bitch, but she's great at her job so we want her to win / sympathize with her. Ellen always lacked this trait - she was "good enough" to be noticed by Patty in season one, but ever since then she was positioned as the opposite of Patty, someone for whom winning isn't everything, someone who doesn't go over dead bodies to get what they want. While that is all nice, the problem is that Ellen's compassion is usually in the way of Patty's achieving the greater good, i.e. vanquishing the big bad of the season. And when the writers don't give Ellen other strengths or anything to balance out this "weakness," she feels weak as a character. Especially when compared with Patty. And while compassion etc. are definitely nice traits in the context of the show they feel very hollow coming from Ellen, mostly because her emotions are spur of the moment things - her getting a crush on Sanchez being the reason why she was willing to throw the whole case away was supremely idiotic. The only time this excuse for the emotional involvement was valid was in season one with her fiance, but ever since then it fell flat. I am still waiting on a sign of strength from Ellen. Hopefully, now that this season has finally pitted Ellen against Patty, we'll get a showdown where Ellen will at long last show her strength and surprise us. But honestly it feels like too-little-too-late. This showdown should have happened in season two or three at the latest. It also kind of did in season two, so I'm not very optimistic. All in all I feel like the show has overstayed its welcome. The cases aren't that interesting anymore and the characters are either stagnant archetypes (Patty) or too weak (Ellen) to really draw us in. Add to that the repetitive elements of foreshadowing which were extremely annoying this time around and I am considering not watching the next season. But then again it will be the show's last, so I'll probably finish what I started ...

Re: Damages
So I never did watch season 4 having little interest after season 3. The thing I keep trying to remember is, was season 1 really all that good. Or is it that all the seasons since 1 has sucked that it makes one look better in comparison.

Re: Damages
I liked the first two, with the third still being enjoyable, whereas I dropped it after the fourth one. I'll speedrun it through it when S05 ends.

Patty Hewes wrote:You hate me? You want to end this once and for all? Now is your fucking chance!
The delivery of that quote is why they pay Glenn Close the big bucks. Also I forgot how great and fitting the intro music is. Having said that, I still root for Patty more than Ellen. I don't know why, especially because they are clearly having Patty go completely off the reservation, but Ellen always struck me as weak and not as good as Patty (going back to the whole "admiration of professionalism" thing that keeps me a good worker drone ). But we can't have Patty win, so I expect to be disappointed unless Ellen turns into Patty to bring her down and in the process becomes more bad-ass ...

Re: Damages
So, I just watched 5x02 (I am a bit behind) and wow, what an awesome episode! This season might yet be good. For the first time I felt like Ellen was acting smart and taking the right steps (using the PI, checking up on her client, getting (involuntarily) leverage on the judge and acting on it) and that she might stand a chance against Patty ... and it is to the show's (and writers') great credit that they managed to twist it all around and make it a win for Patty. I loved that even though it only reinforces my Patty > Ellen theory, because I now feel like there is more Ellen and she actually stands a chance. (Although I will be pissed if the old drunk lawyer will be Patty's undoing. It is true that most of her great support staff was eroded over the seasons (Uncle Ben, the PI, Tom, Ellen) and she hasn't replaced them with anyone capable, so it would be natural, but still. If the show has to make the argument that Patty was weakened over the years then I'll always believe that Ellen of season 5, no matter how smart, capable, and devious they make her, wouldn't have been able to take down Patty of season 1.)

Re: Damages
That's the end, out of all the seasons it wasn't the strongest but I am happy with how it ended Patty Hewes was brilliantly played by Glenn Close and well supported by Ellen Parsons (Rose Byrne). I personally don't think we have had another show with two female leads played so well

Re: Damages
well crap. 2 people suggested me this show and i wasted some time on this crap. terrible show. constant repeating scenes, spoiling the ending from first minutes, and when watching this with a little bit of thinking seeing very fast where this leads and how this will be done. pointless waste of space and time.
