It's vastly different from the way Networks usually go about it. Magic City was renewed for a second season before the show even started. Re: The NewsroomSecond ep was a slight let down from the frenzied pace of the first ep. This one had all the intensity of a worn out pair of slippers. Also I might have to reconsider this for my watchlist if that e-mail idiocy is the standard of the comic relief parts from now on. That was just flat, predictable and not at all funny. Anywho. One great ep, and one not so great ep with cheesy attempts at humor. I'm hoping the next one's better. Re: The NewsroomWizard wrote:

Some are renewed before they even premiere. Re: The Newsroomfjarle wrote:
I disagree, for me it was still highly entertaining, smart, witty and actually fast paced, in contrary to what people believe. I really can't understand the utter drivel that are the negative reviews, this is just like The Walking Dead or True Blood, but in reverse. Re: The NewsroomOrlando wrote:
Yea I thought it was even more fast paced than the 1ST episode, I had to jump back 10-15 seconds numerous times to keep up with the dialogue (although that might be my slow brain ) Re: The NewsroomDeke wrote:
I recommend watching it with subtitles, it really helps. Re: The Newsroomfjarle wrote:
According to the reviews the episodes get progressively worse until the fourth episode (the first 4 episodes were sent out as screeners). So I wouldn't hold my breath I felt the second episode was weaker than the pilot, mostly because the urgency of people transitioning and the live, unscripted broadcast were left behind, but it was still good TV so I'll keep on watching. And if nothing else, Terriers have shown us that you can have three bad episodes and still come back and become one of the best TV shows that season. Re: The NewsroomYou know if even half the facts they say on the show are true...Fuck the actual media. I like this show and it just reminds me how sicking the actual news is. Re: The NewsroomBest. Show. On. Television. Now. Re: The NewsroomThe romantic story lines are so lame...predictable...juvenile...easy to follow...crappy... ...but the rest is fantastic. It's basically the two extremes of tv...great, intellectual, dramatic, powerful -- and awful, predictable, sappy, childish... The good is good enough that I can overlook the stupid relationship gags. -Rob Re: The NewsroomWith a little fact tracking the things they've said on the show has had a level of truth to them. Our actual news these days seem to serve two purposes. One get us all scared to death about things that are going on in the world so were too afraid to fight our rights being taken away. The second part is to divide our country because if they can make it seem that the real problem is the other political power people won't be going after what's really wrong. I mean here in the US the Republicans aren't even trying anymore. Their goal is to screw over the Democrats regardless of the collateral damage (i.e those who need the help since the economy collapsed). The Democrats are just trying to see how useless and incompetent they can be. Voting in this country is whose the lesser of two evils since we have no third party. The sad thing about this show though is the meeting taking place about the way their doing the news would never of happen twenty years ago. Twenty years ago that's how the news was actually told, and while I know this is a drama the fact that everything about what's going on behind the scenes of The Newsroom is even plausible should make people sick to their stomach's. Unfortunatly, put a 10 to 15 years more to that number. Myka : You slept with her didn't you ?

Re: The Newsroom20 years still sounds about right imho... and if I may say so.... compared to US News "Shows", the german news (sometimes) actually deliver the news... but not in an investigative way. Which sucks... Re: The NewsroomSo finally got round to checking this show out.....I love it Re: The Newsroom20years ago with the cover of the gulf war was around the last high spots in what we call the News. After 9-11 the 24/7 news cycle started to get a lot of attention and people realized a lot of money could be made Re: The NewsroomI think the opening message was right on the money - the fact that news is interspersed with ads and has to take into account ratings is about the worst thing that could have happened. Good reporting doesn't bring in ratings, scare tactics and sensationalism does. You can't trust the government to provide unbiased news and the way it is set up you cannot trust for-profit organizations to do it either. So what's the solution? The way the for-profit news operates right now is a great example of a badly calibrated free market, one where the market pressures force the news to be dumber, scarier, and more biased. (I loved the "news tries to be balanced at all costs, even if the other side is completely bonkers" argument.) If we postulate that it isn't in the governments best interest to inform its voters and hence cannot rely on government-run television to inform us, we are left with for-profit organizations and the almighty "invisible hand of the market." The question then becomes, how do you calibrate the news market to make it in the news organization's best interest to provide good reporting? Re: The NewsroomRight now we have the big three in terms of cable news Fox, MSNBC, and CNN. Fox 'News' caters directly to the Republicans and was a driving force to the Tea Party movement. They have actual news during small parts of the day, but they run in-between 'opinion' shows that to the average person are mislead to think is the actual news. This is helped by the fact that if you watch Fox the people they promote as being fair and balance, the go to place for news, etc... are actually the hosts of the opinion shows while the people who do the real news are left in the shadows. This is one of the major reasons people who watch Fox are less informed than those who don't watch any news. MSNBC is the exact opposite of Fox 'News'. They cater directly to the Democratizes and make it seem like all the Republicans are evil. Their not as successful as Fox since the people at Fox have perfected the ability to mislead people, but that doesn't stop MSNBC from trying. It also hurts MSNBC that our president is Democrat so painting the narrative isn't as easy as it is for Fox with their guy not the leader. Lastly theirs CNN that for the longest time was in the middle and didn't really try and have a polarizing view on a subject. I would say they were the last News organization that we had. Since they didn't want to pick a side they picked neither and went the direction of puff pieces and talking in circles. They stopped reporting the news and instead created the news by spending most of the day hyping different things that mean nothing. They devote weeks talking about how such and such will have this huge effect on the outcome of something and then when that pass's they spend a few days talking about how it really has no effect at all before moving on to the next shiny object. The Government uses each of the channels to feed their own goals of staying in office and all the benefits being the maker of laws brings. They go on Fox or MSNBC if they want to drive up the other side as evil baby eating cultist and they go on CNN when they want more air time since they know no one will give them hard hitting questions. The solution thus seems that it will take the people to finally say enough is enough to get things changed which is becoming increasingly impossible. It's clear that the more polarizing you are while reporting the 'news' the more ratings you get so I don't see Networks making a change any time soon. Government is so deeply corrupted by the influence of the wealthy like those who own Networks that their not going to call for a change any time soon. The problem I was talking about with people having a more difficult time trying to make a change is journalist in the past used to work for the people now they work for the money. If you watch the news their is almost never a mention of protest that are going on unless it's to either paint the protesters negatively or something extreme happened. They same goes for reporting the war. I've learned more about what's going on with US Troops from Russia Today and the BBC than I have from my own news outlets here. I'm curious to know if a news program like on this show would work in the real world 49 2012-07-12 02:29:00 (edited by Quinlan 2012-07-12 02:38:44)Re: The NewsroomWhen I say to add 10 to 15 years more (and I'm conservative) is because what you call the high point (you mentioned the Gulf War as if we had the news then, we sure didn't get the news, we had a circus) is the culmination point where people got aware that news was going sideways. Or can be diverted to some other purposes. But it was spiraling down since quite longer than that. Sam Waterston as Charlie Skinner mentions in the pilot about the end of the Vietnam War being loosly linked to Cronkite "having an opinion". (1975). Unless there is an incredible event between the end of Vietnam War 1975 and beginning of first Gulf war 1990 (equals 15 years) that I'm forgetting that "News" made a dent... I stand by my "add 15 to your 20 years". And Charlie Skinner is on my side. He he. Note that "News" in "America" and "News" in Europe or elsewhere is/was completly different as mentioned by wckiller. You still can get the "News" sometimes in some countries. Myka : You slept with her didn't you ?
Pete : Well... you... you told me to investigate ok ? So... she's unarmed. Re: The NewsroomI like stuff like this for its meta-influence on the general population and their increasing alignment with wanting the actual truth/facts. Social media certainly plays a big role too...it's just that shows like this are the early symptoms of change in the world at large... ...or at least that's what I like to believe. -Rob Posts: 26 to 50 of 208Forums - Next Episode → TV Show Discussions → The Newsroom |
