Luck
Suprised that there's still not a thread about this show, 'specially that it's an HBO show. A descriptio for those who don't know what's it about: In his late 60s, Chester "Ace" Bernstein (Dustin Hoffman) has had a long and apparently profitable career in organized crime, primarily in gambling. His career has been interrupted by a three-year term in federal prison, from which he is released as the series opens. In the pilot episode, Ace's longtime driver and factotum, Gus (Dennis Farina), picks him up at his release. On the drive to Los Angeles, Ace confirms that Gus has become the registered owner of a racehorse whose purchase was arranged by friends of Ace while Ace was in prison. The horse is being trained at the Santa Anita track by Turo Escalante (John Ortiz), a respected trainer whose career Ace has quietly followed for many years. After changing clothes at the luxurious hotel where he lives, Ace visits his former associate DeRossi to discuss a plan to gain control of the racetrack in order to introduce casino gambling there. Simultaneously, a group of four habitual gamblers and hangers-on at the track, Marcus, Lonnie, Renzo and Jerry, are planning to make a killing by pooling their money to bet on a "pick six" that could pay the winner over $2 million. Jerry, a brilliant handicapper of races who is perpetually broke due to his addiction to poker, has selected the six bets. The key to maximizing their chances is focusing on one horse who is a longshot in the 4th race - a horse that Jerry knows has been trained by Escalante, who he believes has been hiding the horse's true potential in order to manipulate the odds. Jerry's hunch proves accurate, and the four bettors find themselves splitting over $2.6 million. The pilot episode aired after the finale of Boardwalk Empire over a month ago and I'm more than excited for this show, since the pilot was very well written (David Milch, guy behind Deadwood) and directed (Micheal Mann, anyone?). Although slow, it shows a lot of promise with it's plot and character development. Also, HBO renewed Luck for a second season just minutes ago.

Re: Luck
The pilot's been sitting on my HDD since it came out. A bit contradicted about it, the race horse world sounds very boring to me, but on the other hand HBO and Michael Mann. I just started Justified from the beginning so maybe after that.

Re: Luck
I think this show is great also, but that's probably because i'm also a huge fan of horse racing to begin with. I mean it is the sport of kings afterall.

Re: Luck
Finally got around watching the pilot. Have to agree with Orlando that the directing and cast are brilliant (ever heard of Michael Mann and Dustin Hoffman?). And here comes the but; the whole horse racing scene just doesn't pick my interest. I prefer my horses on the grill done medium. I did watch the clip at the end that showed snippets of the future episodes and there were some scenes there that looked interesting so I will keep an eye out how it will develop but not getting it on board on the watchlist just yet.

Yes. I have never cared for horses or racing, but the quality of this show is undeniable.

I believe it depends on how open minded you are on new experiences. I also couldn't care less about horse racing, however this show, just like the late Lights Out, introduced the concept on the basic and professional level. Through the eyes of our four lucky comrads, we see the entire process from a 'newbie' perspective. By that we start to more and more understand the way of thinking of the jockey's, trainers (every scene with Escalante is precious to me) and the whole gable of horse racing. Not to mention the scheming of Dustin Hoffman, who is just a pleasure to watch. Also the racing itself is shot beautifully, capturing the tension and dynamics which makes you sometimes forget to breath.

Re: Luck
Lights Out actually got me really interested in boxing. I never thought much about the sport but now I have a punching bag hanging from the ceiling. So I wouldn't say it's about open mindedness. Different people, different interests. And I fully agree about the horse races, brilliantly done! But for my dosage of beautifully shot images, I'm fine with Frozen Planet.

Re: Luck
- Do you make a million dollars? Simple question. - No, sir. - Go home. Come back tomorrow. Tell me every fucking thing you did between now and then. If I like what I hear, I'll give you a million dollars for the next 12 months that you work for me. - Doing what? - That's the first thing you write down. "Before I left here, I asked him a stupid fucking question."

It was already renewed for a second season. So the numbers were good.

Luck was renewed after airing only the pilot episode. It didn't start that well (HBO's Luck premiered to just 1.061 million average viewers, and a 0.3 adults 18-49 ratings.) and it quickly dropped to horrible viewership numbers. Here are the numbers for the last Sunday's episode: Luck (HBO) -9:02 PM: 0.474 million viewers, 0.14 A18-49 -11:02 PM: 0.223 million viewers, 0.07 A18-49 So I'm pretty sure that the deaths helped HBO in some way. They probably didn't want to cancel an ambitious show with a spectacular cast just because it wasn't doing good in the ratings.

Re: Luck
Enlightened and Treme also had horrible ratings, but HBO supports them. And they cancelled Bored to Death at the same time. So Carnivale, Deadwood, Luck. Fuck you HBO.

Re: Luck
It wasn't one horse that had to be put down, but three. Should animals get hurt and then be killed just because they are in a TV show? I think not.
2020. Meh.
