Topic: 4x01 The Beginning of the End

Sooo, has anyone seen this yet? I have and it was good but not as great as last season's finale - obviously.

Questions for now:
1. Why does everyone wanna go back to the island?
2. Who are the "Oceanic Six"? We know it's Juck, Hurley and Kate, but the rest? Any guesses?
3. Is Patchy really dead this time?

this has been the case with every Lost season finale yet though, so i wouldn't weigh it up against s3 finale just yet... this show's strength has always been the slow build to an explosive payoff...

i haven't got round to watching it yet [still in "unwind from a solid day's work" mode sad]... but.... i'd have to say i could honestly take an pretty decent [read: no idea really, but hey tongue] stab at answering these 3 questions you put forth...

1. one's life is never more alive than when faced with the unknown, to take a step back from that is literally living in hell... [though i could hazard a guess there is a hell of a lot more reasoning behind this]

2. those three plus... [edit: clearly NOT Rousseau, Desmond... but for the same reasons] Hurley, Michael & Sawyer... [i have good reason for thinking this, but nothing i could clearly articulate at this point [read: too many vodka/red bulls under my belt tongue]... edit: duh me...

3. ...hell NO... [BIG wishful thinking... Patchy ROCKS big_smile]

i'm going to eat your brains and gain your memories...

Re: 4x01 The Beginning of the End

I have to say that - i lost interest in LOST about half way throw season 3 so i have no real comment on this show.

All the best to LOST for season 4...

Re: 4x01 The Beginning of the End

You did? I thought about quitting it during S2 but what can I say? I'm a faithful person, so I stuck with it and the later S2 episodes as well as S3 just blew me away! And by coincidence, I even found out that my dad loved the show as well - and he didn't watch any TV besides documentaries and the news - and the Tour de France.

Re: 4x01 The Beginning of the End

im gonna guess they can't handle that they left the other survivors behind, and they need to go back to rescue them.

and as for the six, i know that the person in the coffin in the fanale was ment to be locke, but they changed showing that, so they may have changed their mind entirly.

it depends if they count michael and walt, cus im sure they get back to land, but they may just lay low and not be known about. but im pretty sure sawer will be one of them, cus he is probs with kate. other than that i dont have any theories really.

i thought the first ep was good, but i think ill just let them build up so i can watch like 4 or 5 in a row, shows like lost or 24 do work better on dvd.

Re: 4x01 The Beginning of the End

It was good. I like the flashforwards, though the ambivalence of whether the guys from outside are totally evil, or really the goodguys is freaking me out...

"Lost" bids you welcome to a whole new level of mindfuck.

Re: 4x01 The Beginning of the End

S3 was awful...wish I had given up..and have now given until the end of episode 2 to win me over again....otherwise, its bye bye...its currently the worst show I'm watching, tonight, I even prefered watching a re-run of DS9 over the shitty Lost episode they aired.

I didn't think they could, but they actually managed to make an episode that continued the fucking shit downward spiral of season 3.

Re: 4x01 The Beginning of the End

I hate Lost...it's like one of those annoying people that answers every question with a question.

...and yet I never miss an episode.

It's one of those shows like Surface, Prison Break, Invasion, etc. that had a great plot idea which should have ended after 2 seasons...but noooo, they sacrifice a good idea, for longevity!
...the only thing that can bring it to an end is increasing suckitude! The ratings need to drop in order for it to die! it's a sad sad thing...no hope for a proper ending...

How do you know it was supposed to be Locke in the coffin? Can you link me to your source? I'v read some speculations about who it was in the coffin but I've never heard that they decided to cut that part out after it has been shot. That doesn't sound like something Team Darlton would do anyway.

Now about Walt and Michael: They're not off the island. David Perrineau is in the S4 pomo pics and Damon and Carlton have said in their podcast that he and Walt will probably return to the island. But anyway, according to your theory, they wouldn't be amongst the Oceanic Six anyway...

Man, this show is seriously screwing with my mind.

Re: 4x01 The Beginning of the End

smells like rubbish to me... and if iirc, 'team darlton', [or 'the cuselof' as we refer to them around home] mentioned something about this, though i surely don't remember locke's name coming up, just their usual cryptic shit.. in the during-the-season-break podcast that came out a while ago... again i could be wrong as i was doing the grocery shopping while listening to it and it's all a mite hazy now... [and my mp3 drive is out on loan atm]...

edit: read some of the comments to that post, and others, yeah? *deletes hastily added bookmark*...

i'm going to eat your brains and gain your memories...

Re: 4x01 The Beginning of the End

eeeh, I listen to my podcasts while grocery shopping as well. I'll re-listen to the last two because my Alzheimer's brain barely remembers anything they said about it. I've been checking iTunes for new podcasts but nothing new yet. sad

1. Why does everyone wanna go back to the island?

I guess the implication is that somehow the island (Jacob?) can warp and fracture time and getting off the island has somehow changed the timeline - notice that in the new future reality Jack's Dad is still alive (when Jack was trying to get more drugs the pharmacist wanted to call his Dad to confirm the prescription). But looks like it's only Jack that really wants to go back coz his life sucks and he's racked with guilt, probably for leaving the others behind - Kate seems happy enough, although a little scared of whoever she is with, and Hurley just wants to forget!

You got to admit, they do keep us guessing smile

Re: 4x01 The Beginning of the End

Hmm. I don't think Jack's dad is alive in the future reality. I think that's why he was so pissed when they said they'd have to call his dad. And while he seemed to want to get back to the island in the S3 finale, he didn't seem to want that as much this time...

Re: 4x01 The Beginning of the End

Anyone else notice that Hurley could see Jacob in the shack?

My guess is all the main characters have the ability to see him and it was him that drew them to the island.

Guilt over leaving the rest. The reality they would have no real lives to go back too and their lives would always be about being one of the 'Oceanic Six' bordem life would never be as interesting or exciting again. Thats about all the 'realistic' reasons i can think but i dont think it will be that simple it is lost after all wink I like the timeline theory (especially as using this quiite common sci-fi story they could do quite a lot of their explaining)

Charlie also told hurley that he had to go back and help the others and i assume that we were ment to think he was slightly more than just part of hurley's apparent madness.

Tbh i think it will be a combination of the 'realistic' options with a few slightly odd 'lost' type things wink

John Locke wrote:

Jack, Kate, Hurley, Sayer - Probably the person Kate is with and scared of, maybe violent/drunk etc, he would have no aim once off the island but would never admit to wanting to go back. apart from that no idea they seem to have done a good job of keeping it out of the episodes to keep people talking tongue oh yeh you said guesses...... Locke and Claire (first two i could remember the names of tongue

John Locke wrote:

dunno tongue

My question: Why did hurley chose (or maybe not chose) to come back, he said he was staying then he was back, did something happen to change his mind or was it someone, friendly or otherwise?

I think when we know that we will know more about why they need to go back smile

Well, there's another clue... later in the same episode S0323 there's a scene between Jack and the doctor treating the woman who Jack saved from the car crash and they say:

Jack - Do you have any idea what I've been through?
Doctor - How much have you had to drink today Jack?
Jack - (laughs) Ok, tell you what, you do this... you get my father down here, get him down here right now... and if I'm drunker than he is, you can fire me!

You can take this two ways, but I think it means he's still alive smile

Anyway, did anyone else freeze-frame S04E01 when Hurley peers into Jacob's shack and sees someone who looks a lot like Jack's dad sitting in the rocking chair?

And let's not forget that Lost Missing Pieces Mobisode #13 which showed Jack's dad on the island at the same time that the plane crashed back in S01E01 telling Vincent the dog to go wake Jack because "he has work to do" smile
( http://www.lostpedia.com/wiki/Missing_Pieces )

Not I'm obsessed with Jack's dad ! Well, maybe a little... roll on episode S04E02!

Re: 4x01 The Beginning of the End

I don't think at all Jacks dad is alive.

As we all know, Charlie is dead, however he started appearing to Hurley once off the island. I think the same thing has happened with Jack. He starts seeing his father. Mix this with drugs and alcohol and he starts finding it hard to tell what's real and what's not.

Just like Charlie, I belive Jacks dad is dead in the physical sense that we know however his ghost or whatever you want to call it is still around.

Re: 4x01 The Beginning of the End

I've capped the whole episode and all I could find were these two really dark shots. But if you look closely, you can definitely see that it is Jack's dad - or at least someone who looks a lot like him.
