Re: the Books vs. the Show
So, I can´t wait for next season so I´m thinking about diving in to the second book? can you do that and still get everything? I mean since I haven´t read the first book? (have I missed to much from only watching the series?)

hmm, i do belive you could do that. there may be some little parts different or missing from the tv series. but the main thing is same. the book will continue at the same place where season 1 ended. at least i remember Starks are where they should be and Dany also, but for Jon and Tyron i don't remember exactly... you can always read some quick summery of first book(maybe that will fill the missing parts what may or may not appear) and then continue with the second one..

Re: the Books vs. the Show
Why don't you start with the first book - you'll get more insight because each chapter is told from different character's point of view and you'll already have the visual side in your mind but it is the chance to re-live the first season while waiting for the second I wish I didn't read the books - it spoiled the show too much - still enjoyed it a lot!

it did spoiled the show, but at least it's good fun watching others reactions for happenings for what you knew that it will happen and of course you don't have that "what cliffhanger!!!eleven!!" feeling, because you know what will happen next and you just have to wait for 12. july, when you can continue reading the series with the fifth book.

Re: the Books vs. the Show
There's not anything substantially added to the books. Minor details altered here and there (eg, Catelyn's sister's son is called Robert in the books and Robin in the show), Roz was added for the show and doesn't appear in the books. So sure, you can get away with starting on the second book. On an unrelated note, this map is pretty cool :

Re: the Books vs. the Show
Thanks for the responses guys, I´m torn between reading the second book and reading the first book and then wait for the second season... But maybe it´ll be boring to read a book when I already know all the major happenings... including the ending and the ending of ep 9.

You could always wait a little while. Say,, 2 months or so before second season starts, then read 1st and 2nd books. Then you refresh your memory AND get the little details you missed from watching the show.

Re: the Books vs. the Show
I was kinda thinking about reading the books as well. I've decided against it. The overwhelming consensus from people that have read the book is that its a very good adaptation and they haven't screwed up the story at all, I don't want to spoil any surprises. I might go and read the first book, but no way am I going to spoil the ride by reading the second at this stage.

Re: the Books vs. the Show
I think the surprises are setup even better in the books so i would see it as the show ruining the surprise for the book. I think for the first season i appreciated it a ton more cause i read the books. We are all different though so do what you feel is best for you. Just wanted to give another option to consider.

Re: the Books vs. the Show
I was NOT going to read the books, but then, season finale was such a clifhanger, I ended up biting the bullet and diggind into the books. Now, at the middle of the 4th book, I feel my life draining away slowly as I drift into sleep and DREAM I am reading a chapter of Brienne's life that I am making up entirely in my mind, I even dream of flicking the pages. That was scary. And for those who do not know who Brienne is ... she is a very pleasant surprise for next season if it's played right.

Re: the Books vs. the Show
That is the girl cast as Brienne. Gwendoline Christie. Read the fifth book and my image of some characters have changed because of the tv show. Also looked over some of the people coming in to play the new characters being introduced next season. Some very good actors coming in. Hope they will be able to do the characters justice

Same with me, several characters look a bit different but not in a bad way, Syrio Forell for instance. Gwendoline at least is . For legal reasons I totally underestand, everyone in the show is older than in the books. The whole medieval thing of "becoming a woman at first flowering" and 13 year olds in sex scenes just does not conform with production values for TV, the whole Daenerys plot would just become too close to child pornography. There is also a lot less raping in the show.

Re: the Books vs. the Show
I'd definitely say the books are worth reading. I haven't read them all but I'm opening the 4th one soon. For example some "ridiculousness" is tuned down in the show; Tyrion has one black and one green eye in the book. Daenerys and Viserys have lilac eyes. Things like that, also I don't believe Hodor goes around screaming HODOR HODOR HODOR in the tv series, but I might remember that wrongly

Re: the Books vs. the Show
why would anyone prefer to watch the show instead of reading the books? i loved the first season and have since then read all the books(including the first one) and the tales of dunk and egg. it is way better than lord of the rings and no matter how awesome the tv show is the books are way better. felt that the first book was very much like the tv show but there are minor and major differences, and there are so much more information about everything. only reason to not read them is if you hate fantasy or you have severe dyslexia, and then there are still the fantastic audiobooks read by roy dotrice. (i heard a few at work) have been looking forward to the second season for a while, but i feel like the real excitement starts in the third book. the only problem with reading the books is the cliffhanger in "a dance with dragons". I read the books to escape the cliffhanger in the first season, now i'm stuck on one that is much worse. i hope George RR Martin is ready to publish Winds of winter soon( probably five years ), i HATE cliffhangers when i actually have to wait.. dolorous edd is hillarious, so i had to add a qoute from the fifth book ▼Spoiler "I never win anything," Dolorous Edd complained. "The gods always smiled on Watt, though. When the wildlings knocked him off the Bridge of Skulls, somehow he landed in a nice deep pool of water. How lucky was that, missing all those rocks?" "Was it a long fall?" Grenn wanted to know. "Did landing in the pool of water save his life?" "No," said Dolorous Edd. "He was dead already, from that axe in his head. Still, it was pretty lucky, missing the rocks."
Drake: Are the restraints really necessary? Kellogg: Archer broke both Wu’s arms. While shouting “Woo!” Archer: Happy accident.

▼Spoiler Craster's daughter not only is in the books, she is fundamentally important, she and her baby. Aria's plot is being diminished a lot, I felt a lot like watching the last 4 Harry Potter movies, it all seems way to focused on people who read the books to give the scenes their true dimension. So far: Minuses: Qartheen dresscode - it is actually important in the books, since in them Daeneris gets quite a bit "colonized" by their qartheen hosts up until she goes "fuck it, I'm a Queen and Khaleesi" and bolts out of there. I mean, is no lack of sex, look at the scene with Joffrey1s nameday gift, so ... no reason - save perhaps contractual. No peach in Stanis-Renly's family reunion. Where are the green seer brothers" Are they going to leave all Old God's wisdom with the wildling girl? Indifferent: Shae becoming Sansa's maid. Ok, I can underestand leaving the future gang raped mrs Bronn out of the plot for budgetary reasons. Too little Dog Brothers (both the Mountain and the Hound) Lack of color. I know they are a bit more realistic on the portrait, but I missed the rainbow colors of the rainbow guard. Not a minus, but I kinda was expecting that from the gay king Renly. Plus: Brienne. More crows, rsrsr, gotta love the night's watch, especially to remember that Winter is Coming! Davos, almost as good as Tyrion. Melisandre is hot, scary but hot in a facesitting dominatrix kinda way. Harrenhal. and of course, Tyrion.

▼Spoiler Hmmm..i think u misunderstood about the girl im talking about..cuz i speak about Rob and not about what happens beyond the wall...Anyway i fully agree with what u say and im eager to see how they handled the King's Landing fight (Stannis Siege)
