Topic: Firefly
Firefly
Sooo... I saw Serenity recently and really liked it. Naturally I decided to check out Firefly. I'm halfway through the aired season and I just can't figure it out. How do you cancel a show this cool? Awesome universe, funny as hell and decent acting. How do you not get ratings with this one? It's got this whole cowboy bebopish feeling all over it and if you asked me last week if I thought there'd be a character to top SG1's Jack O'Neil I'd tell you not in a million years. But here I am today saying: MAL FING ROCKS. So does anyone know the story? Why did it get canceled?

Re: Firefly
yeah, it's totally a case of fox not knowing what to do with a show. they really blew that one. just like they keep f'ing with arrested fevelopment.

Re: Firefly
fox aired firefly not in development order as it was intended but in a different confusing way. Furthermore airing a show friday night around 9 pm doesnt help ratings that much

Re: Firefly
Serenity didn't suck in my opinion but it was on a grander scale and that may have taken some of the magic of the original firefly concept ( a bunch of misfits all alone in the blackness of space minding their own business)... anyway, a movie is better than nothing and it gives some sense of closure to the whole story. Except maybe one thing : who the hell is shepard book??? I hope we'll get to see his story one day; and yeah, those bastards over at the Fox did it.

Re: Firefly
Pfff after seeing the name all over the forum I decided to give it a chance. At first I was a little sceptical but gotta say i'm pretty amazed by the mood of the show and simply love it. And yes the movie wasn't that good but I think it was because they wanted to show too much in too little time. After watching all the episodes and the movie its feels empty

Re: Firefly
I was very excited about the show when I first saw the promos on Fox in the spring before it aired. When my wife and I watched the first episode I gave up after about 10 minutes. I was very disappointed. What is this, a sci-fi show or a western? Well my wife kept watching (thankfully) and I started watching again a few weeks later. After another few episodes I was hooked. When we were watching the pilot (Serenity), they advertised "Fastlane" next Friday at 8PM. Wait a minute that's Firefly's slot. Went to go look at the Fox site to see where they moved it to and found out we had just watched the last episode they were airing. I started thinking "Crap, it's Alient Nation all over again". Fox has a good sci-fi show and they can it. Of course why not, who wants to make money. Or at the very least entertain people. I think the hype has hurt the show for newcomers. It is certainly not one of the best shows ever made. But I feel it was one of the most entertaining and had an incredibly deep story for each character for such a short lived show.

Re: Firefly
I really loved firefly. The humor in this show, as in all of Joss Whedons shows, is unbeatable! I laughed a lot in the second episode when Mal kicks Nichka's mercenary into the engine... just so unexpected. I have seen a lot of series, and this is one of my absolute favourits. Now all I want is to know what the hell's up with Shepherd Book? Is he some kind of former alliance, king, superstar, or what?

Re: Firefly
My guess is former alliance operative just like the big bad villain in the Serenity movie -who btw is also the coolest villain ever in my opinion; My only hope is that we get to know about that particular storyline in Joss' new Serenity comics; They should take place after the first comic series and before the movie from what I heard... Anyone has more juicy details on that?

Re: Firefly
Well, he is an awsome villain, and so is the bountyhunter in the last episode of firefly. I also like Mayor Wilkins III in Buffy. Joss really know how to create great caractors..

Re: Firefly
Firefly was something i downloaded and stashed away for a rainy day, having heard virtually nothing about it. and a year later when that rainy day came i had the biggest smile on my face, because the show was so good, then i kicked myself in the arse for waiting so long. then i found out it had been cancelled. then heard stories of how and why it got canned. the horror.... the horror....

Re: Firefly
True... it wasn't the best show of all times and true again, neither was the movie. BUT... ... there was some kind of pure magic in that thing... "When you can't run anymore, you crawl... and when you can't do that..." "... you find someone to carry you."
------------------------ Ok... now that's something.... I made a typo in my username... should be a "n" somewhere... ah yes... Quinlan

Re: Firefly
I saw the movie Serenity first - not knowing it was the end to the Firefly series. TONIGHT I must/will start to watch Firefly, luckily with my superpower of forgetfullness I don't remember a darn thing from the movie (other than there are very attractive females in it, as with all Whedons shows) so I still effectively have the movie to watch again as well.
I sleep through most or all of these

hehe... coolest superpower ever: forgetfulness... and enjoy, Firefly is some damn good fun... The Train Job, Ariel & Objects In Space are all awesome episodes... the rest are super good too, but those three rock...

For Summer Glau, start watching the sarah connor cronicles. And btw the opening in firefly owns! I had it as a ringtone for, like, a year..

Re: Firefly
in what format?... here's a midi file i had as a ringtone a while back... quite a while in fact. i'd hazard a guess, you'd find some polyphonic or whatever for newer phones... [i'm old school when it comes to mobile phones ] edit: Done The Impossible was interesting, certainly not essential viewing... not nearly enough cast/creator stuff IMO... one thing that did catch my eye though is at the end Joss has a small clear backpack... wondering if it's the same one he mentions in the 'Once More With Feeling' commentary/doco thingy??? hmm, off to dig out some Buffy DVDs methinks...
