Re: 2x23 - A Fistfull of Paintballs
Any theories as to who's in the ice cream cone then? I'm guessing it will be someone we've seen before cos it would probably make for a better pay off.
Re: 2x23 - A Fistfull of Paintballs
Ace of Hearts indeed.
No idea whose in the icecream suit but that it was funny AMH was in it at the beginning...he's not been in a lot since The Dead Zone ended.
Re: 2x23 - A Fistfull of Paintballs

Re: 2x23 - A Fistfull of Paintballs
The Community writers' and directors' command of genre conventions and tropes is unbelievable. Several times now they managed - in addition to incorporating a lot of very smart meta jokes on a weekly basis - to spoof and at the same time pay homage to a popular film genre and in the process create some of the funniest and most entertaining TV episodes ever.
Re: 2x23 - A Fistfull of Paintballs
even i laughed in this episode. and i have to agree - best community episode.
Re: 2x23 - A Fistfull of Paintballs
paisley1, thanks, I'm kind of proud of that sentence myself
As for Sawyer, I guess he's good-looking, the thing is he's very "chiseled" and has hard features, which isn't bad and doesn't make him ugly, but it also doesn't make him everyone's type. His looks - and the default Hollywood "three-day beard" - work well for the characters he's played (Sawyer and even this cowboy), but he'd be a hard sell for a romantic comedy if he had to play a sensitive guy. You'd be better served with Brad "Baby Face" Pitt and even Jake Gyllenhaal. So pretty, yes, but not universally pretty like most of the guys you mentioned - with the exception of Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who appeals more to the "nerd" crowd (no offence)
Re: 2x23 - A Fistfull of Paintballs
none taken. although, were i a nerd, i would probably be offended that you felt the need to say "no offence" while implying i was a nerd
Just by frequenting this forum and discussing TV shows at length qualifies you as a nerd or geek, just like the rest of us
hm, i wasn't aware that JGL appealed more to the nerd crowd? (who are they?), but i can easily imagine him in a romantic movie
What I meant was his type-casting. 3rd Rock from the Sun, 10 Things I Hate About You, 500 Days of Summer, etc. In most of his movies he wasn't your typical romantic lead (think Ashton Kutcher or Brad Pitt), but either a geeky/intellectual sidekick (10 Things I Hate About You) or a very atypical romantic lead (500 Days of Summer, which btw. is a fantastic movie). Inception was really the first serious movie where he played a serious, non-geeky (action) hero and while I agree that he did a great job and is among the best actors of his generation, to a random sampling of female audience members - if they'll even recognize him - he'll come across as a weak-willed, shy geek because of the roles he's been playing. Again, it's not a bad thing, but nobody in Hollywood would produce a $50 million romantic comedy with him as the protagonist.
what i'm getting at is.. i guess.. yes, sawyer has more of a "chiseled" look, but that says nothing about looking good or not? i bet the typical romantic comedy type isn't everyones cup of tea either?
Of course not, there is no one type that suits everybody and there are girls who dislike Pitt or Gyllenhaal or even Sawyer (I should really look up the actor's name, but I am too lazy). But the fact is there is a "median of beauty," for both men and women, usually propagated by fashion magazines and movies. It's just what our eyes find aesthetically pleasing, that's all. And you can tell how close or far from this "ideal" someone is. And fact is that Brad Pitt and Jake Gyllenhaal are closer to the Davidoff model than either Gordon-Levitt or Sawyer.
And yes, it makes me feel dirty just talking about this "beauty ideal," because everyone's unique and we shouldn't judge them just by how they look, and it's all fake and photoshopped, etc. But fact is that how famous you become in Hollywood is 80% how close you are to the beauty ideal and 20% is you acting skills. That's all I was saying - yes, there are women who hate Pitt and love Sawyer or JGL, but they will be a minority compared to the women who worship those guys.
And that is all that matters when it comes to romantic comedies - how many women can you get into the cinema by having a male protagonist they like to look at (and would probably pay to look at even if the movie is terrible and the plot non-existent) and a female protagonist they don't hate.
Re: 2x23 - A Fistfull of Paintballs
Once someone told me that there's no man who would marry a woman who he didn't think was beautiful...
...and then I took the time to really consider what most married women that you see actually look like...and then I realized that this whole discussion doesn't have anything to do with what we actually perceive, but with what we think we're supposed to perceive.
Everything is the perfect expression of that which it is...

Re: 2x23 - A Fistfull of Paintballs
what about brick and mysterious skin?
I will profess my ignorance at this point and say that I haven't even heard of these movies before, let alone seen them. Has he played action heroes in them?
hm, the median of beauty is really changing though. you don't see a lot of burt reynolds or tom selleck kind of guys in movies like you did 15 years ago [..] um, i think JGL, especially in his more, well, "hipstery" characters, is a sign of the future, and i wholeheartedly embrace it
Yes, absolutely. The median of beauty has been moving away from muscles and macho for quite some time. It went through the "metrosexual" man, e.g. Pitt, and is slowly arriving at the more socially awkward geek type. I have no doubt that JGL and other stars like him will be the biggest celebrities in a few years and they will embody the median of beauty. In that regard you are well ahead of the curve
(I actually read somewhere that the change to "worshiping" the more geeky types stems from the change in our society away from manual labor and strength to machine-controlled labor and intelligence. According to this article, females, subconsciously looking for the mate who is best capable of taking care of them, used to be automatically drawn to strong, muscular types because years of evolution always favored them with the strongest chances of survival, most food, best protection, and most likely to have viable offspring.
But now with the advent of technology and how much it controls our lives muscle strength is no longer an indicator of success but rather intelligence and the ability to control said machines - through programming or simply better understanding. In that case the geeks and nerds are becoming the "alpha males," because they have better (paid) jobs and in more control of the world around them than the jocks.
Personally I think that's a bit too simplified, but the changing median of beauty is definitely an argument for it. Maybe the romantic outlooks of many geeks aren't that bad after all and all it takes for them is to leave their apartment once in a while and meet some girls )
