Re: 1x01 - Pilot - Premiere - Winter is Coming
The first episode is a very nice introduction to the characters and a bit of the story. Though I wonder how they will explain the background and history of the Martin universe.
Though this episode is not perfect. Because Petyr did not appear in it.
Petyr should be in the next one
They have done careful explanation so far of everything. More like hints. Some things have been changed from the books. For example Vinerys said he been waiting for 17 years to have his throne back. In the books it was 14-15 i believe. Probably a change to make some of the teenagers older and therefor easier to cast (Robb, Jon Snow and Viserys for example). Many of the other kids are still the same age as in the books.
I was stunned by how beautiful the girl playing Sansa was

well any actor/actress having to be involved in sex or violence seems to be older. Robb and Jon were according to the book 14 years old. Daenerys was 13.
it's just not the Hollywood, but also our current society that does not allow those things in besides books.

The first episode has inspired me to read the book.
Re: 1x01 - Pilot - Premiere - Winter is Coming
I'm a bit weirded out by Catelyn's casting. Not exactly how I imagined her at all.
Awesome series though, looking forward to it. I like how they cut down on the sexy time, which is a bit too romance novelish to me in the actual books.
like I said in the other thread though, I wouldn't read the books now, it'll just spoil the series.

Re: 1x01 - Pilot - Premiere - Winter is Coming
It's seemingly a setting thing...it's set in an imaginary age with parallels to real historical ages where that was how women were treated/viewed. The second episode seems to have hints of feminine empowerment though, if that's what you're wanting.

Re: 1x01 - Pilot - Premiere - Winter is Coming
Yeah, I wouldn't expect any enlightened sorts of empowerment...it's more about power struggles and how characters accumulate power. The aspect of episode 2 that I'm thinking of involves Daenerys and her relationship with the guy she was given to...and it's more about her taking a different approach to her position with him than anything...self-empowerment rather than gender empowerment, I suppose.
...but even that empowerment isn't really about becoming self-actualized, as much as it is simply about ego empowerment/manipulation.
It is what it is...and I wouldn't anticipate the story becoming about a more evolved society at any point...it's about brutality, oppression, betrayal, and all manner of badness...and the setting reflects such characteristics.
...a tale about such things in an enlightened society would be much different.
