Re: HBO Renews "Game of Thrones" For Second Season
According to wiki:
According to the Nielsen ratings system, the pilot was seen by 3.8 million viewers, ultimately attracting more than 8.9M over eleven broadcasts, and achieved a 9.1 household rating for Sunday primetime. After the broadcast of only three first season episodes, HBO announced plans to produce a second season of Rome in 2006, for release in March 2007. By the end of the first season, the series gathered more than seven million viewers per week. The second season premiered in January 2007, with the first episode attracting 7.5 million viewers.
And Spartcus:

Re: HBO Renews "Game of Thrones" For Second Season
They have already renewed the show for a 2nd season that will focus on the 2nd book. First episode had an audience of 2.2 million, and based on how much money they spent shooting the first season I don't think it's a surprise they renewed it so early in it's season 1 run (also doesn't hurt the fact that more people will probably watch it now knowing there will be a second season.)
Yeah from what ive heard they already decided it would be at least two seasons when they ordered the show. The actors contrats (at least those who dont die first season) was for two seasons and at least some of the castles they are using on Ireland was rented for 2 years and sometimes even more. The kings Castle in the capital of Kings Landing was rented for 6 years by word on a Fansite written by one of the people connected to that castle.
They have big plans for this show and hopefully the viewers will be high enough for it

Well - as always - it all depends on the ratings. Even HBO won't throw money at a dead horse. I don't see it happening now but it could happen to any great show.
Re: HBO Renews "Game of Thrones" For Second Season
If Mr. Martin remains himself supervising the writing and fanbase stays the same or grows this will continue. and i hope i just predicted the future.

Re: HBO Renews "Game of Thrones" For Second Season
so it is 2.2 million with first broadcast and 4.2 million with multiple broadcasts combined?
this is still strong but not as impressive as i first thought tho. Or are those numbers very high for HBO as they are premium cable and more expensive than others?
HBO Showtime Starz don't genially get viewers more then 4million for 1 viewing episode, and while 2.2 isn't the highest for the network since Boardwalk Empire got more in it's first episode there also not bad. True Blood got something like 1.2million for it's first episode and now it get over 4mil. Next Sunday is Easter so number should grown by the 3rd episode
