Re: The Mandalorian
the movie is out and no one here is talking about it.... real people seem to like it critics are all over the lower map mostly. ( but what scifi nerd cares about critics???) so its something to keep an eye on if nothing else.. i will still see it when its streaming to my place for free. rotten T has it as the best disney made starwars and best of the prequels also but it is early days

Did you enjoy it? If so, I am happy for you. If not, then for the same reasons you did not.

I haven't seen it yet. That's why I wanted to hear your thoughts! I admit I look forward to seeing Grogu do his thing, but if that's all it is? Not much to look forward to. Cat videos are free.

I have seen better special effects in ARMY OF DARKNESS. If I want to see puppets moving badly, I will watch the muppets. But even they did it better. The mandalorian series was way better.

With franchise you mean "Star Wars" ? - Yeah, but that did not start with The Mandalorian and Grogu Star Wars has been F'd up since Episode 7, maybe even before then (for me it was the reset of the Extended Universe). There are still some good outliers like Mandalorian Season 1, Skeleton Crew and Tales of the Jedi. But overall they killed the franchise.
Deserved more runtime: Abbys | Dead Like Me | Devs | Firefly | Gangsta. | Jack of all Trades | Kevin (probably) saves the World | Lodge 49 | Mrs. Davis | NYC 22 | Powerless | Roadkill | Special Unit 2 | Stumptown | Surface | The Brave | The Crazy Ones | The Finder | The Middleman | Truth Seekers | Two Weeks to Live | Whiskey Cavalier https://next-episode.net/user/WilliamDrakeMcGregor/

i care less about special effects then i care about plot, writing, and acting.. i always laugh when groups complain about realistic special effects in live action shows then only talk about the story or "art" in horribly animated shows. any way you look at it i expect this to be the last of the mandalorian cycle.

It is not just about CGI. Have you watched it? The Mandalorian feels off. Usually a good Star Wars movie, immerses you, and before you know it, it is over. This new Disney Crap feels disconnected and makes you painfully aware of how long you have been sitting. Movies or good entertainment should be fun, not a drag. Its like you as a kid watching those 3 last minutes on the school clock, before you get out and summertime begins. They are the longest 3 minutes.

I love the honestly of this woman. Listening to her reminds me of a group of friends seeing something then going to coffee after and just going off on "what the f. did they think?" Its why despite being a heck of an internet personality Disney banned her from premiers. here's her review: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UseQhG7TL1Y And if you'd like her pedigree for being a lifelong Star Wars fan: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hQKYyccNRKI

Thank you for the link. She was way harsher then I. But I do agree with her. I thought it may have been just me. But it turns out it wasn't. She even pointed out a few things that had not bugged me, but do now. Who the hell is Disney pandering to? Are they not a business? Is their job not to make money? I don't get it. They have a cash cow with the Star Wars franchise, yet at every turn they screw it up. Or has society changed so much, that I can no longer identify with it? More and more I watch stuff and say to myself. What did I just see? Am I that far to the left or right that I cannot see whats in front? I don't know. At least I still have the early works. Thank you again for the link. As a side note, I was reading the comments after and ran across this. The vlogs of Dave and Greg, the two worst storm-troopers in the fleet, are better than anything Disney vomits onto the screen. And I agree.

well have a look at your self, how old are you? which star wars was your first? ( that is a big one) left right or center, any story is going to annoy someone. and people no longer get annoyed, they get vocally fanatic. (usually because no matter where you are digital media is targeted to make you mad so everyone is primed to be pushed into " defend and attack" mode) society has not changed, society's ability to ignore the worst of things to see the good things and have productive dialogs however is beaten out of most people. it shows in media, dating politics and schools. answers (factual or wrong) are a search away for any side of a debate. but are usually covered in political, religious or cultural support. even for stuff in starwars..... first gens ( the orginal trilogy) fought over ewoks. second gens fought over jar jar third gens have their fights ( i have no idea because to me they were so meh, who cares) ( Han went out like a sheep to slaughter, at least luke died spitting in their face, and i forget how leia went) and everyone thinks their universe is the right vision. so yes nothing has changed, but every tribe has gotten more specialized and smaller and more targeted so your tribe is smaller and it appears like you are more alone segregated in society. for example i saw a video on the cartoon arcane and it delved into the reasoning and thoughts behind a character in the show BASED ON WHAT HAT WAS ON THEIR HEAD IN EACH SCENE. no writer EVER has any idea what the end video will look like but this video portrayed this info like it was a sermon on the mount and definitive to the series.. how where the hat was and how it was worn was a major part of every scene the character was in. ( and i bet the writer will look at that and think WTF but ill take credit for such nonce in my writing) you are alone, because you have to be crazy to put one tenth the importance into these movies many people do. or maybe now in society you are crazy if you don't. mando and go-goo might be bad ( and i might get assaulted for using those words) for the 55+ crowd it might be good for 10 year olds it might be great for the 18-25 yo i expect its a mixed bag for left or right but did it make more in the theater then season 3 raised disney+ profits????? that is what is going to matter in the long run and if we ever see another star wars movie in the theater again.

Born in 65, first star wars was the first star wars. Not so much bitching about the movie, but in my ability to get it, or enjoy it. Granted we have color now, and the special effects are mind blowing. The problem is the wow factor is gone. I remember how I felt when I left that theatre during the first one, I turned around and purchased another ticket. Back then it was truly enjoyable, and you wanted more. Now it just seems to be a time sink, And I do not want to see it again. I get what you are saying as well. I also know how grumpy old men are made, and I now understand why my dad told me to turn that crap off, and his saying how he cant understand things anymore. I have become him. Society has changed. Language is one, a lot of crap you cant say now. Also attitude has changed. People don't seem to respect privacy etc etc. Or your property or personal space. Everything has changed. It was a fun ride.

Re: The Mandalorian
the prequels damaged star wars for me the first words out of a jedi mouth in the first prequel was about how being jedi they were going to use force (not the force) for a treaty if needed. like a couple of thugs. after that the timeline was just messed up 20 years of galactic empire only? it takes 20 years to just approve to build bridge today how could jedi become a myth and old religion in 20 years? no one knew anything about jedi in "a new hope". that is just ridiculous. galactic war with jedi and "new" storm troopers just forgotten and a galactic empire founded like nazi just over night and 99% of the population is just fine with it? that is just ridiculous. and it just kept getting worse. prequel triology was mostly entertaining if just ridiculous. the movies after that were only disappointing in my hope they would be better. the mandalorian season 1 gave some of that hope back after then hard a very hard time keeping the quality. book of boba fett was a joke, the kids and their bikes especially rogue one was done well, but solo was poor in the best light. skeleton crew would have been great with 18 year olds and not children as it was it was for 8 year olds and not much more. i will likely always be a die hard fan, but i might also give up.

Re: The Mandalorian
For me, the best Star Wars wasn't any of the movies or tv series, but instead, the EU books. Those are what made me a Star Wars fan and what defined it.

Re: The Mandalorian
Personal opinion on the previous 'back and forth': It reads like the same arguement I see played out for Star Wars and Star Trek -
People churning out the junk wrote:If you don't stop mouthing off about the slop we're churning out then its all going to come to an end and there won't be anything new.
To which
More and more fans wrote:Well… Threaten me with a good time
With every passing failed show I see more people waking up to the idea that they really would rather see a show just stop than to have it be destroyed and turned in to steaming piles of shit. I'm not the only person that would rather watch The Expanse for a 10th rewatch than be forced to endure one hour of Star Trek Academy. We all mourn for Farscape and Firefly but those shows have an enduring legacy because they weren't drained for every drop of blood the network vampires could suck out of them. Star Trek & Star Wars have become those empty corpses and still the vampires remain firmly attached at the jugular hoping for another drink. I don't think any of this has anything to do with 'the year you were born' or trying to be agest about it basically saying 'well you old folk don't get what the young hip crowd likes.' One can objectively watch shows from the various decades in sequence and watch the writing quality go down. You can see a shift from 'story based' to 'character based' scripts resulting in shows being soap opera-esque now. You can point to dozens of elements set up in previous canon for a franchise that the new writers don't know, ignore, throw out. It doesn't take much to look at an episode like Star Trek: TNG "Measure of a Man" where Data is put on trial over being machine or person. A poinent episode about slavery with amazing dialog. Then look at Star Fleet: Academy with dialog about "My space boo... Wanked spanked and ready to be a diplomat" - and defend that writing is just as good but speaks to a different generation: Hog wash! And its the same in Star Wars. Look at any of the early work, then look at whatever that space witches coven show was. Look at Mandalorian the very topic of this thread: Gone from being a serious badass killer to a baby sitter because Disney saw the marketing money for the little green baby. Ruin the show if it means short term gains in dolls. I personally think most of that is due to a single concept being lost - That great I.P.s like these are grander than the people making them. These shows are like the lands of world: We don't really own them, we're just here to be the stewards of them. The people put in charge of Star Wars, Aliens, Star Trek need to remember that they are very very very lucky to be handed the TEMPORARY stewardship of these properties and during that time they get to play in real estate someone else cared for before them and will again after them. It seems that for the last decade all we have is people using these franchises for their own agenda, to spread their own narrative in society, and find a way to make a fast buck. Maybe that's the fault of hedge fund ownership and the shift to streaming were content QUALITY no longer matters over content MINUTES. Plus the creation of a business environment where somehow a property like Disney can loose tens if not hundreds of millions of dollars and still get sold off to someone else at a profit. Creative accounting has ruined the industry. But I think its very wrong to point at the audience and blame them for being old enough to remember when the shows were good then call them the problem with "Parent just don't understand" remarks. Its not that the older audience doesn't understand the younger. Its that the younger audience doesn't understand what has been lost. They won't sit through the original Alien, or Star Wars movies because of the age of special effect or because it goes more than 60 seconds without the scene changing location: And thus they don't get exposed to actual plot build up, good writing, surprised not telegraphed a mile away. Sitting through Babylon-5 where the entire 5 season story arc was planned in advance, politcs as well as action, season 1 callbacks from season 4 because it was thought out - lost on today's audience.

Re: The Mandalorian
i hope i can say i do not blame the kids of today for anything. i remember what it was like being a smart kid and running circles around adults on just about everything. i still have good days where i can grasp foreign concepts and understand them with little effort.. not "67" however...the concept is a little too basic.. although not much more then fear "7" 7.8.9. i dont blame disney too much they are catering to the LOWEST COMMON STORY that will make money from the MOST PEOPLE. its just sad that stupidity is ALWAYS THE LOWEST COMMON thing. people do not demand better for their money even the expanse had a lot of woke stuff and politics propaganda in it, thankfully it had a lot more good scifi to make it bearable. ( although the books were less subtle then the tv series as i remember) and yes i love the original alien and aliens movies, but would i watch them this year more then once? only for nostalgia. the effects are very painful, but not as painful as watching old episodes of mcgyver or dukes of hazard or battlestar galacticia. ( lets not even go buck rogers.....) where yes they were very racist, and sexist and really a lot of other horrible things. but mostly the stories were shit hemorrhages of the worst kind. ( yes even star trek, TNG and a ton of other shows were really pretty bad even if they were much better then anything else of the time) the past is a foreign country, they do things different there. not evil not crazy just different. but not really as good as we think. ( much like how we remember vacations better then they really were) George had a vision for starwars, empire and some left for last jedi. George needed a payday for the prequels, before he sold the ranch, disney thought it was a cash cow it could milk with very little effort... marvel had a ten year vision that panned out BIG. but no one has since had a vision that big with stan lee gone. ( even babylon 5 had a long term plan) disney did not learn from anything. ( see i cant help myself from blaming them dammit) ( i need to go read the news and cheer myself up with the worlds progression to Ragnarök)

Holy crap you guys like to write. I think from now on I will stick to. I seen it, I enjoyed it. Seen it, did not like it. Not writing an essay. @SgtSaint I do think it has to do with age. Sure we had crap back in the day. But not like today, when you see 100mill spent on garbage. It is getting worse. Also Star Fleet: Academy was not written for adults. No self respecting adult that I know enjoyed that. We had better quality back then. Today its all about the fast buck and screw quality. Its a shame really. You say it has nothing to do with when we are born, and in the same paragraph you say they catered to the younger generation. Which is it? No don't answer. I have had my limit of reading today. And I do agree with the attention span. It truly is a shame.
