Re: Ending or Canceled TV Shows for the 2019-20 Season

It should have ended at the end of the last season.
Season 6 is a let down so far for me.

Lets hope 7 is better to end on a high.

Netflix has vetoed Designated Survivor‘s hope for a fourth season, cancelling the ABC cast-off after a 10-episode try-out on the streaming service.

“We are proud to have offered fans a third season of Designated Survivor, and will continue to carry all three seasons for years to come,” reads a statement from Netflix. “We’re especially thankful to star and executive producer Kiefer Sutherland, who brought passion, dedication and an unforgettable performance as President Kirkman. We’re also grateful to showrunner/executive producer Neal Bear for his guiding vision and steady hand, creator/executive producer David Guggenheim and EPs Mark Gordon, Suzan Bymel, Simon Kinberg, Aditya Sood and Peter Noah along with the cast and crew who crafted a compelling and satisfying final season.”

EXCLUSIVE: Nightly newsmagazine Vice News Tonight is returning to TV on Viceland, the basic cable network joint venture of Vice Media and A+E Networks.

VNT had been looking for a new home after HBO in June opted not to renew the program after also ending Vice’s weekly newsmagazine following a seven-year run. At the time, Vice Media, run by CEO Nancy Dubuc, made a leadership change at the news division, installing Jesse Angelo as news and entertainment chief and parting ways with Josh Tyrangiel.

Angelo is spearheading the new incarnation of VNT on Viceland. The program will serve as a new nightly primetime anchor for the channel, succeeding variety series Vice Live, which was canceled in April after a two-month run.

Cancellation Watch Breaking News: Netflix Renews 3% for a Fourth and Final Season
While the news apparently has not made it widely to the U.S. yet, the Netflix Brazil Twitter account passed on the announcement from series creator Pedro Aguilera that the dystopian series 3% has been renewed for a fourth and final season. Here is the announcement translated from Portuguese courtesy of Google:

Very happy to announce that 3% are going to the fourth and last season and that everyone will be able to follow how this wonderful story ends. It’s my first original Brazilian series and I‘m already excited just thinking about the Council overthrow!

‘Grace And Frankie’ To End With Seventh Season; Becomes Netflix’s Longest-Running Original
Grace and Frankie is set to end after its seventh and final season – but not before becoming Netflix’s longest-running original.

The digital platform has handed the Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin comedy a 16-episode run for its final season, taking the total number of episodes to 94.

This comes ahead of the premiere of season six, which will premiere in January 2020.

Fonda, Tomlin, Sam Waterston, Martin Sheen, June Diane Raphael, Brooklyn Decker, Baron Vaughn, and Ethan Embry will all return for the seventh season of the Skydance Television-produced series.

Re: Ending or Canceled TV Shows for the 2019-20 Season

Sci Fi TV News Briefs: Ursula Le Guin’s Earthsea Books Are Headed to Television, Hulu Grabs The Handmaid’s Tale Sequel, and More

TV Journeys to Earthsea: Yet another epic fantasy series is in development for television, this time based on Ursula Le Guin’s Earthsea books, with Jennifer Fox producing and A24 as the studio. Those books started out in 1968 as a trilogy which included A Wizard of Earthsea, The Tombs of Atuan, and The Farthest Shore, and they are set in a world that consists of a vast archipelago of hundreds of islands. The focus is on the use of magic and how the abuse of the arcane powers can impact the balance of the world. Additional books and short stories followed the original trilogy, expanding on the world of Earthsea. The books were previously adapted for television by the Sci Fi Channel as Legends of Earthsea in 2005, though that took many liberties with the source material and Le Guin expressed her dissatisfaction with the production. The author had given her blessing to Jennifer Fox to adapt the books before passing away, so hopefully this upcoming series will be more faithful to the books. No network is attached at this point, but expect this to draw plenty of interest.

Hulu Takes The Testamants: Hulu and MGM have acquired the rights to Margaret Atwood’s upcoming novel The Testaments which is a sequel to her 1985 dystopian classic The Handmaid’s Tale. Their plan is to adapt it to television, but it is unclear at this point if it will be separate from Hulu’s current Handmaid’s Tale series or if it will be incorporated into that show. The novel takes place fifteen years after Offred’s final scene in the original book and is told from the perspective of three different women: Aunt Lydia (from the original story), a young woman living in Gilead, and a woman living in Canada who is horrified by the situation in Gilead. Creator and showrunner for Hulu series Bruce Miller has envisioned as many as ten seasons for the show, so it is possible that elements from The Testaments could be worked into the ongoing storyline.

‘The Boondocks’ Reboot Gets 2-Season Order By HBO Max
HBO Max has given a two-season, 24-episode order to a reimagening of the animated series The Boondocks, from creator Aaron McGruder and Sony Pictures Animation. The new Boondocks will launch in fall 2020 with a 50-minute special. All 55 episodes of the original The Boondocks series will also be available on WarnerMedia direct-to-consumer platform at launch.

The Boondocks revival was taken out to the marketplace in late spring and was confirmed by Sony Pictures Animation at the Annecy festival in June. HBO Max immediately emerged as the most likely home for the new series because of WarnerMedia’s history with the franchise. The original Boondocks animated series, based on the comic strip created by McGruder, aired on the company’s Adult Swim, a large part of whose programming will be available on HBO Max. The series earned McGruder a Peabody Award.

‘Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists’ Canceled By Freeform After One Season
The Pretty Little Liars franchise is coming to an end for now. Freeform has opted not to renew Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists for a second season.

There were high expectations for the spinoff from Freeform’s biggest hit Pretty Little Liars. It starred PLL alums Sasha Pieterse and Janel Parrish reprising their roles and hailed from the same auspices as the original series, writer/executive producer I. Marlene King, Alloy Entertainment and Warner Horizon Scripted Television.

But the new series, based on the popular book series The Perfectionists written by PLL author Sara Shepard, could not come close to the blockbuster ratings success and social media popularity of PLL. Its first season averaged 260,000 Live+Same Day viewers and a 0.12 rating in adults 18-49. Judging by the cancellation decision by Freeform, Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists likely did not make up for the modest live viewing with substantial DVR and streaming bumps.

Get ready to say good-bye to The Jim Jefferies Show. Comedy Central is ending the series at the end of its third season. The final episode of the series airs later this month. The weekly series has Jeffries sharing his unique views on politics and the world with his viewers.

A spokesperson for Comedy Central said the following about ending the series, per Deadline:

“The Jim Jefferies Show will air its final episode on November 19, concluding a brilliant three-year run on Comedy Central. We thank Jim and the team for bringing us a unique and international approach to culture and politics. We look forward to developing more projects with Jim in the future.”

This will likely not be the last time television viewers see Jim Jeffries on the small screen. NBC is developing a comedy with Jim Jeffrey as the lead. That series is coming from Suzanne Martin, Sean Hayes and Todd Milliner’s Hazy Mills and Universal TV. Jeffries will write the new series with Martin.

The sitcom “stars Jefferies as a fictionalized version of himself, offering his unique take on modern life and the complexity of relationships.”

BH90210: Cancelled by FOX; No Season Two for Reunion Series

The reunion for the cast of Beverly Hills, 90210 is over, at least for now. FOX’s BH90210 series has been cancelled so the summer show won’t be returning for a second season.

[...]

The first season of BH90210 on FOX averaged a 0.88 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 2.51 million viewers. It was the network’s highest-rated summer series in the demo and was in second place in viewers. It started strong but the numbers dwindled as the weeks progressed.

Though it was billed as an “event” series, producers were open about their hopes for a second season. The sixth and final episode ended with a cliffhanger.

    A ‘FRESH’ FAREWELL:
GROUNDBREAKING COMEDY ‘FRESH OFF THE BOAT’ TO END ACCLAIMED SIX-SEASON RUN

The Huang Family Adventure Culminates With a Special Hour-Long Series Finale Friday, Feb. 21

Groundbreaking ABC comedy “Fresh Off the Boat” will conclude its critically acclaimed six-season run on ABC, Karey Burke, president, ABC Entertainment, announced today. The series, produced by 20th Century Fox Television, will wrap up with an hour-long series finale, FRIDAY, FEB. 21 (8:00- 9:00 p.m. EST).

“We couldn’t be prouder of this game-changing show and the impact it has had on our cultural landscape. The success of ‘Fresh Off the Boat’ has helped pave the way for inclusion throughout the industry. Nahnatchka Khan and her brilliant creative team have created an unforgettable series with an Asian-American family front and center, something that hadn’t been done in two decades. The cast, led by Randall Park and Constance Wu, is one of the finest and funniest on television. We’ll miss the Huang family and are eternally grateful for the incredibly heartfelt stories they have told these past six seasons,” Burke said.

“I’m so proud of the show and what we’ve accomplished over the past six seasons,” said series creator Khan. “Thank you to everyone at ABC and 20th Century Fox Television for going on this ride with us. It was truly a special experience and hopefully will forever be a reminder of all the stories out there that deserve to be told. Like B.I.G. said, ‘And if you don’t know, now you know.’”

Inspired by a true story, “Fresh Off the Boat” stars Randall Park as Louis Huang, Constance Wu as Jessica Huang, Hudson Yang as Eddie Huang, Forrest Wheeler as Emery Huang, Ian Chen as Evan Huang, Lucille Soong as Grandma Huang, Chelsey Crisp as Honey and Ray Wise as Marvin.

Set in the 1990s, the series follows the experiences of hip-hop-loving Eddie Huang and his family, who have moved to suburban Orlando. In this final season, the Huang family is at a crossroads. Jessica is becoming an educator (teacher boss); Louis is trying to expand himself outside running the restaurant by becoming a business consultant; Eddie is weighing whether to attend college or to take a different path; Emery is trying acting; and even Evan tries out pukka shells and a new nickname!

“Fresh Off the Boat” was created for television by Khan, who also serves as consulting producer. Keith Heisler and Matt Kuhn are showrunners and executive producers. Jake Kasdan and Melvin Mar also executive produce. 20th Century Fox Television, together with ABC Studios and Fox 21 Television Studios, is a part of Disney Television Studios.

“Fresh Off the Boat” airs Fridays at 8:30 p.m. EST on ABC.
