Re: Doom Patrol

Well, I'm finally caught up with Doom Patrol, and I must say, this is precisely what the superhero genre needs. It's wacky, it's fun, the characters are eccentric, and its cognizance of the criticisms surrounding Titans is showcased throughout thus far. Titans and Doom Patrol are so different in tone that it wouldn't make sense to compare the two seriously. I like both for very different reasons. Titans is definitely darker, but there are also a few dark/morbid episodes in Doom Patrol that would easily hold it's own against the best of them. Did I forget to mention how much fun it is to watch Doom Patrol? The fun thing about Doom Patrol is that none of them are meant to be superheroes—nor do they want to be (except for Cyborg).

Doom Patrol continues to impress me with how well it portrays its characters and their growth, and the level of weirdness this show continues to exhibit is right up my alley. Brendan Fraser is always killing it with his query comebacks and sarcastic tone. The guy is a freaking legend!! Diane Guerrero as Kay Challis/Crazy Jane deserves all the praise because her acting is outstanding, and her mouth is so foul that a warehouse full of soap bars wouldn't even make a dent. I love Jane to death!! Rita Farr/Elasti-Woman, Larry Trainor/Negative Man, Niles Caulder/The Chief, Mr. Nobody, and even 'Danny' are all great. Moreover, like most of the episodic television DC characters—compared to their movie counterparts—I like Joivan Wade as Victor Stone/Cyborg more than Ray Fisher in Justice League. Are you listening Warner Bros./DC Films/Zack Synder?

Man, I basically put this week's daily rotation of shows on the back burner to catch up with the episodes. As a series, Doom Patrol is definitely off to a solid start, and I look forward to the remaining episodes this season. If you've been on the fence, it's time to jump off because DC Universe means business. smile

Cool. smile Lots of great creative and bizarre ideas in the show. cool

Only half through the first season, can't stand too much of the 'personality-challenged' character at once. wink

Re: Doom Patrol

Too much whiny self pity from the majority of the characters for me I'm afraid; I got to episode five I think and couldn't take any more.

Yeah, I would have liked less of that too...

Re: Doom Patrol

While the show is not the easiest to watch (for me), it is often pretty damn good though! smile

I've now finished 1x10, which features The Beard Hunter. I won't mention any details here, but damn... they've reached a new pinnacle of creative weirdness! big_smile

They better not whine too much or it's *draws finger across throat*

Uh... whining is pretty much all they do. The story just kinda happens.

What makes it interesting is that the story gets so absurd basically all the time that reacting to it is usually all anyone could do anyways, so it actually ends up fitting nicely.

Really, this is a good show; but you are in for a lot of people being whiny.

Re: Doom Patrol

some_one, you've summed it up nicely! smile

Even though I really, really wanted less whining I'm looking forward to the next season.

Cool! Give us an update when (if? cool) you reach the middle of the season. smile Or sooner - if you can't wait! big_smile

Re: Doom Patrol

I was a bit disappointed by 3x1, only really enjoyed the last few minutes. But I hope it'll get better. smile

Re: Doom Patrol

I was shocked that it was possible to make a more boring episode than all of season two but those crazy kids pulled it off. If they keep this up I expect the season finale will just be real time footage of stalagmites forming. If you made it through that at normal speed and are only a bit disappointed you have a seriously tough constitution. I was at 2.7x at could still feel my beard growing.

Real-time footage of stalagmites forming, I like that! big_smile

I never watched anything at 2.7x speed, but I checked emails and stuff intermittently - which I rarely do while watching something. smile

Re: Doom Patrol

Fortunately ep 2 was just regular boring rather than spectacularly so.

21

Re: Doom Patrol

dunno what they did with this show, have they got the writers from dr who on board?

The beginning of the 3x2 was fun! smile

The middle part could have been better, but then the ending... Using Alphaville's Forever Young to lead into a deadly surprise... that was classic Doom Patrol! big_smile

23

Re: Doom Patrol

FYI: 3x1 and 3x4 have post-credit scenes. cool

Re: Doom Patrol

Eternal flagellation pretty much sums this show up perfectly.

Yes! It's like they want you to stop watching the show. tongue
