Re: Star Trek: Discovery

One thing I can't work out is why they appear to do a Spore Jump but there's no scene before this where Stemmets gets plugged in...

OK - this was a 'bottle episode' (saving cash for big CGI upcoming) so I'll forgive the transgression

Next week looks good if you're seen the trailer (the revenge of Harry Mudd...)

Re: Star Trek: Discovery

Interesting...

SPOILER Show
Random thoughts and easter eggs

  • Six episodes in and we finally got mention of the USS Enterprise and the Constitution-class in general (Captain Pike got a nod in episode 5).

  • Sarek was lost close to Yridia, which we have learned in many past episodes is the home to a race of information dealers.

  • "Lethe" brought the second mention of a "burrito" to the Star Trek franchise.

  • The organic explosive seems to be the same as used by the Triannon in the Enterprise episode "Chosen Realm"

  • The nickname first used by the creative team for the USS Discovery is now canon with crew wearing "DISCO" shirts.

  • Vulcan blood is now DayGlo green.

  • The USS Discovery food synthesizers are way too chatty!

  • Vulcan is not supposed to have a moon, but the objects seen in the sky can be explained by Trek books which give Vulcan a sister planet named T’Khut.

  • Two more shuttle pilots dead (Suicide Vulcan and Cornwell’s pilot), bringing series total to four.

Also, nice to see Trek veteran Joe Menosky return to the franchise with a writing credit. smile

Not a Trekkie then?  I'm guessing you don't like ToS?  Harry Mudd was in that, so you can maybe see why he's in Discovery.  I bet you're going to hate tribbles smile

That's the second biggest X I've ever seen.

I mean, in this series or show in general? I only watched 1 Harry Mudd ep of ToS, but I thought Wilson was pretty good as Mudd.

I'm wondering if there are any fans of Toast of London here?

I can't believe Clem Fandango is Michael's love interest!   smile smile smile

That's the second biggest X I've ever seen.

This only means the character works, when it's causing such strong emotions.

+1

Re: Star Trek: Discovery

I liked the episode and the Mudd character, but I think the ending could have been stronger...the only way I will forgive the ending is if his new-found wife turns out to be a criminal mastermind.

Re: Star Trek: Discovery

Mudd was perfect

NOT A SPOILER - Who's Ash?

There is a hint in ep 4 you may have heard of (don't look it up if you want the story to simply unfold)

Please note that the clue is fan-guesses

Go watch Orville as well so we get two decent shows on at the same time (then we'll hit Feb and have to rely on X-Files)

Ugh, Klingon tiddies...

...where did I put that rat's ass I could give?

Daemons are benevolent or benign nature spirits, beings of the same nature as both mortals and gods, similar to ghosts, chthonic heroes, spirit guides, forces of nature or the gods themselves.

Re: Star Trek: Discovery

the midseason finale was pretty good.

about Mudd, i just dont like that character at all and that episode just felt like boring filler, hoping we dont see him anymore and less filler episodes and more action and so on tongue

Theory...

[Possible Spoiler Space]

SPOILER Show
End of STD is they ended up in the Alternate Universe

This was hinted at early in the show when Stemmets said that the Spore Drive could take them to other realities

We finish in a Klingon graveyard of sorts - so not real Universe (I theorise)

We already know there's a Mirror Universe story so IMHO this makes sense

-spoiler tags added for safety... some of us have large screens smile / TheD

Interesting theory, we'll just have to wait and see.

Interesting indeed. So the question that remains is which universe did they come from in the first place; if that's even quantifiable dealing with hypothetical set of possible universes? Perhaps, with the final jump Stamets made before turning all zombie-eyed and bushy-tailed, Discovery is in the original universe we thought it had been in all along? Or perhaps, it landed in a much more nefarious universe altogether? One of the major benefits to the Star Trek franchise is the vast universe that's been created over the years, and tying Discovery more closely to that could mean exciting possibilities down the line. You saw what I just did there? Chronologically, the Enterprise is already flying around out there, and even though Kirk isn’t helming the flagship yet, it would be quite interesting to see what she is (has been) up to during the war under Christopher Pike’s command. Or maybe see how some of the other powers in the galaxy who show up later, like the Romulans, interact with the conflict between the Federation/Starfleet and the Klingons. Hopeful thinking, but doubtful.

And here's an interesting take on Tyler from G!...

SPOILER Show

Tyler has to be a secret Klingon, right? L'Rell's comments that she wouldn't let anything happen to Tyler and that something will happen "soon" imply that he is a sleeper agent who will be activated, most likely at the least convenient time. The torture he remembers is most likely the surgery that altered him so he could pass as human. When Tyler asks L'Rell, "What did you do to me?", he's not talking about torture or rape, but rather the transformation of his very body (a violation that, if handled articulately, could serve as an allegory for sexual violence).

Yep, I would have to agree. There's even some chatter on reddit suggesting that Voq might actually be Qagh 'The Albino.'

Theory #2 - worked out spoiler tags now

SPOILER Show

The Romulans have been paying attention so when Discovery kills Kol the Romulans pounce.

I like this concept but it's far from Canon as Kirk was the first to ever see a Romulan

I far more got for #1 - maybe it'll be a mini Voyager?

And - yeah on Voq but maybe he rebels?

Roll on Jan 7th...

Re: Star Trek: Discovery

Loved TNG, Voyager also DS9(well some of it). Didnt like enterprise much, liking this new series so far but out of all the species in the whole Star Trek Universe i hated were the klingons, i dont know why but i could never like them, every time an episode contained a major story line that involved them i would skip it and now they are one of the main races in the new show, not only that they now talk soooo slow and they look like some mad plastic surgeon got drunk and just went mad on them.

To prove you wrong there are some extremely good Klingon eps in DS9. The stand out ones are a result of the character development of Worf so essentially the later seasons have stronger Klingon eps.

Quick picks - S07E07 + S07E22

The first is notable as it features Kor (Kol from DISCO is of the same house)

Re: Star Trek: Discovery

Been watching the ST franchise since I was a kid - starting in 1966 at age 6.  I wasn't a fan of TOS until my college years when I was able to notice and appreciate the social commentary included in many episodes.  With that said, I was 10 when "Let That Be Your Last Battlefield" aired, and that was pretty heady stuff for a kid my age CONSIDERING what was going on in the world at that time.  I've LOVED everything put out since then, with TNG being a hands-down favorite.  Here we are, 9 EP's into Discovery, and I still can't say I'm a true fan yet. I plan to keep watching, waiting for the characters to develop and the crew to become a cohesive unit.  Oh yea, and for the plot to move beyond the freakin' Klingons!  There's SO MUCH potential here, I'd hate to see this series fail because someone tried to reinvent the wheel. I wish I could say exactly WHAT it is I'm hoping to see in the way of plot or storyline, but it hasn't happened yet.

Re: Star Trek: Discovery

The Orville is doing a lot of the classic trek stuff and doing it with a sense of humor. Nice FX as well. And they do it without violating any Trek copyrights, which is an interesting accomplishment.
