Re: Star Trek: Discovery

So i never watched the original strar trek. All i've seen were the movies. And i can say (as a non fan) that the biggest advantage this has for me, is the fact you can watch it without the need for background. Everything is explained along the lines and with minimal knowledge i possessed it felt like i started a new adventure.

Oh and the fact there are starships and gun  and aliens XD

A second season is extremely likely, NetFlix paid the bill for season one for worldwide rights outside USA/CA so for CBS it's all profit

Well, mostly. the Netflix deal was made before production, and production costs went slightly over budget, but the subscriptions they already have covered the rest - still, all profit from day one.

One thing I didn't factor in is that NetFlix got ALL ST - that's prob worth a good bit as well

It's also interesting to note that they break "General Role One" before we even get to the big ST symbol reveal as seconds after it's stated aliens swamp around the well (one or two - then prob the rest)

Yeah - some weak plot-points here, I don't care

As I said to one of my mates before it aired when he pointed out the fact that TOS had sod all holograms, touch screens etc my reply was, So what? It don't matter if they use modern CGI for stuff they couldn't do in '66 - I'll like it anyway

I like it...

Re: Star Trek: Discovery

Oh yeah

I did TOS when I was a kid - so for all you uneducated peeps...

Watch the earlier ones you ain't seen yet

There is argument over TNG / DS9 being the best (it's DS9 BTW - watch it if you ain't)

DS9 is, supposedly a rip-off of Bablylon 5 - so if you're stuck for SciFi find B5 (extremely good once you hit season 3)

I think the main issue with it, is that it doesn't "feel" like Star Trek.

It's an immensely popular franchise, with one of the oldest, largest and most committed of fanbases of any TV show ever, but I don't think they've made a show the fans want to see.

Just saying.

The "Die Hard" "old school" trekkies that hate the action oriented new movies and apparently this show are also an aging dwindling fanbase, there simply aren't enough of them to support the creation of new shows with production costs this high.

Star Trek needs new followers and the old drama/more intellectually driven stories just don't bring in the numbers these days.

It does have a slightly different feel to the old school stuff, but I really enjoyed it for what it was, I'll definitely keep watching. Perhaps drawing new younger viewers into this version will get some of them to go back and watch the older stuff as well....

If that's the case, then why bother calling it Star Trek at all?  I can't see fans of this show appreciating any of the previous series - the entire look, feel and budget is vastly different.

Money of course, why else?? An existing franchise has a ready made fan base to build on, easier to make money than starting from zero.

The JJ Abrahms Star Trek movie made just under $260 million and into darkness made about $230 so if they can build on that, it will be worth it I guess.

Like it or not, this IS start trek now. When both the movies and new TV show all skew to this new more action focus, its not an accident.

If you don't the new direction, just watch reruns of the original series I guess....

Re: Star Trek: Discovery

Loved every minute twice over.  A drama set in space with humans exploring and meeting/fighting other races is enough for me!

Re: Star Trek: Discovery

I'm a die hard Trekkie from TOS, all the way through to Enterprise, and I'm not sure what they don't like about it. The Klingon speech is a bit slow, but that's it...

33

Re: Star Trek: Discovery

I havd nothing much against it except that i do not think Star Trek should be only about war and conflict, and also that star fleet officers should always follow the rules. But if this will be about other stuff as well and not just only a long conflict with klingons, it might be good. It looks good atleast, except generally too dark. Especially that scene at the end in court, a dark court room like that is just ridiculous. It is impractical. Any civilised society has bright court rooms.

Re: Star Trek: Discovery

I mean we are only 2 episodes in, how do we know this will be the tone for the whole series....plus they need to get people to subscribe to the streaming service its on so my thoughts are, they came out with high action starter episodes to get people in.

Re: Star Trek: Discovery

It won't be all war - guess a battle per episode of so

They're having Harry Mudd + Mirror eps

Hope we get Tribbles smile

Ha, man there were well over a dozen Easter eggs hidden in that episode alone. Some less obvious than others, but what interested me the most was the potential nod to Section 31. My DS9 peeps should know what the deal is there.

Re: Star Trek: Discovery

Its ironic that the trekkies that could probably have spotted the Easter eggs probably weren't watching as they seem to have written off the series already as "not trek enough"

I looked up the Section 31 stuff in STD and it seems very plausible

Black ST Insignia
Code Black
Dark uniforms
Lorca's above top secret status + ability to recruit a 'traitor'

Re: Star Trek: Discovery

What are your thoughts on Star Trek Discovery being a Section 31 ship that operates outside of the constraints of the Prime Directive, does that ruin Trek for you or bring you into a new viewing experience?

I'm also interested in your thoughts on the idea that because of so many inconsistencies with the canon of Star Trek and the way its filmed, that perhaps we are in a mirror universe?

I love the possibilities that come with this new Trek but I'm not sold on the story or the characters yet.

Re: Star Trek: Discovery

I've watched every episode of all the Star Trek series. Some more than a few times, and i get the ambivalence about Discovery, but I was entertained. And since that is the point of watching stuff I'm satisfied.
