Manhattan

The show is set against the backdrop of the clandestine mission to build the world's first atomic bomb in Los Alamos, New Mexico and follows the brilliant but flawed scientists and their families as they attempt to co-exist in a world where secrets and lies infiltrate every aspect of their lives.

Not a fast paced show but it has a Mad Men vipe to it, the acting is good and the production value also not bad.
The show slowly but steadily reeled me in and for now i'm hooked.

Re: Manhattan

I started watching this, quite interesting.

Re: Manhattan

I bailed after two eps. While there was some interesting stuff going on out there (I've met some of those involved) this show is a soap with nerds and it just didn't work for me. What really goes on inside engineering and physics just doesn't make exciting video.

Re: Manhattan

I really liked the pilot, will check it out when the season is done.

Re: Manhattan

I've watched the first 10 eps and finally decided it's not worth it.

It's another Historical Drama, where they take the past and wrap a soap opera around it.
I've read and watched a lot of documentaries about this chapter in history, and they've seeded the soap with interesting facts here and there, but eventually the "signal to noise" ratio has dropped to below my threshold.

I had liked the first few chapters as it focused on how the pressure must have been massive on the leaders, who knew the stakes. But the focus has shifted to other drama threads, obviously to keep the non-historygeek demographics interested.

Re: Manhattan

I'm still 4 eps behind but that's good news anyway.

Re: Manhattan

I'm five episodes in and really loving it. And I don't understand the 'soap opera' argument, if you want history without drama, then watch a documentary.

Re: Manhattan

There's a big difference between taking an actual historical situation and highlighting the dramatic aspects to make it less dry to watch, and
adding manufactured plot elements obviously intended to cater to, and expand, the lowest-common denominator viewing demographic.

The environment of the organization, the war background, all provides a great source of potential drama elements. Some actually have come through. The boss having an affair, where nobody knew about it, (except for the security team - who did nothing as they assessed it as a minimal leak potential), the harassment of homosexuals, the interaction between the scientists and the LosA security teams, all are on historical record. But the late-night sescapades, shameful lesbian rendezvous, have moved to the majority of screen time, and really distract from what I though was the real interest. It's become a soap about people who could be in any high-pressure environment.
