Topic: Anime

Does anyone here watch Anime? I finally gave the genre a shot these past two weeks while being buried with snow and cold. Thought it was all like Spirit Away a movie I just don't get the appeal of. After seeing FMA:B, Steins:Gate, and Attack on Titan it has warmed me over.

Being new to the genre I'm just curious what other peoples thoughts are on it.

Well I used to be into anime in a big way some ~4-8 years ago.

Not so much these days, because most of what they produce is the same-old ecchi crap (which a lot of people enjoy).

Attack on Titan is pretty much the only new show I have watched in a while.

Shows you might want to give a shot are Code Geass and Death Note. There are more of course, but those are the first 2 that pop into my head after a 4 year anime pause smile.

Re: Anime

Besides the obvious Naruto I'd definitely say Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, Elfen Lied, ... http://myanimelist.net/ is a good site for anime shows, seeing what's popular etc

Re: Anime

I recently tried to give it a go with Cowboy bebop , but it didn't catch on me. The best for me is Avatar (both series are pretty good) I guess I prefer the more western stuff.

you just listed 3 popular anime I did not like smile.

Peoples taste in anime is all over the place from what I have experienced. In TV shows I usually see a pattern in what people like, in anime I have no bloody idea what is going on.

Re: Anime

I really don't like the animation style and it takes a westernized Cowboy Bebop to win me over. I also watched the first Ghost in the Shell movie which was fantastic, but that's all that I watched of the anime genre. I have no interest in Attack of the Titans.

Re: Anime

Never really tried it, except maybe some famous movies like Ghost in the Shell some time ago but it never got me to check out more.

I have enough western anmation shows to keep me busy.

Re: Anime

I seem to enjoy the darker type Anime. It wasn't until the third episode of FMA:B with the girl and the dog that I became really interested in the Anime genre. Up until that point my only experience was the two movies my friends said were the best Anime had to offer (Spirit Away and Howel Moving Castle) both of which bored me.

I enjoyed Steins:Gate because it was the first time travel show I watched that used the type of Time Travel I believe in. Well if time travel was possible how they did it was the only way I could see it working. Now how it was done, but with different timelines and deja vu. So that is my favorite one currently.

It took me six episodes to enjoy Attack on Titan. The main kid annoyed the fuck out of me. If it wasn't for his girlfriend I would have bailed on the show. I'm glad I stuck it out because the show did get better with time. It reminds me a lot of Game of Thrones in the sheer death count it racks up. Plus it has a really nice sound track. Songs 1 2 3

I tried giving Mahou Shoujo Madoka★Magica a shot with how much hype it got when I was looking for other ones like Steins:Gate but I could barely make it through three episode. Shows with characters who whine especially kids drive me insane. Which was why I almost dropped AoT.

I do recall seeing the first episode of Death Note a few years ago but that was during a time I was dumb and was dead set against watching anything with subtitles. It doesn't bug me anymore so I will give it a shot.

Oh and I have seen Fairy Tail because it was on Netflix. I enjoyed it at first when it was the first actual anime I watch, but now that I have seen better ones I'm no longer impressed with it has I first was.

it is one of those rare shows that actually has decent english dubs.

Re: Anime

Cowboy Bebop has a, supposedly, good dub.

Hi, and welcome to the club! Like you I was a skeptic 12 years ago, but I tried out Naruto and found it very good and entertaining. Since then I've tried many different popular shows. My top 5 would be:

Berserk http://myanimelist.net/anime/33/Berserk

Hunter x Hunter http://myanimelist.net/anime/11061/Hunt … ter_(2011)

Steins;Gate http://myanimelist.net/anime/9253/Steins;Gate

Great Teacher Onizuka http://myanimelist.net/anime/245/Great_Teacher_Onizuka

Naruto http://myanimelist.net/anime/20/Naruto

But hey, Attack on titan is ok, not to mention Hijame no Ippo, Death Note, Fate Zero, Cowboy Bebop, Kenichi etc etc:)

Re: Anime

If you like the darker stuff, something like Perfect Blue, Paprika or Tokyo Godfathers might be more up your street than the Studio Ghibli collection.

As for me I love anime, including all Ghibli films and those I've listed above and the main long running show I watched was Bleach which id finished now sad

Re: Anime

My problem with Ghilbli films is just there is nothing in the films that ground it to reality.

I've noticed at least in the Animes I have checked out that the soul focus seems to be on kids and teens. Are there not many that focus on adults?

I only know Ghilbli from Ni No Kuni.

Re: Anime

I was only talking about the two films I have seen. Spirit Away and Howling Castle. I don't really remember too much about either just that it made very little sense. I'm not one for abstract meaning though so that might have something to do with it. I'm more straight and to the punch kind of person. Which is why I liked the three Anime I listed off. They were trying to tell a story and focused only on telling that story. There was very little abstract thought to it.

I do enjoy both Avatar series, but for some reason because it's American its not considered Anime.

I tried to watch the first episode of Kill la Kill...not my cup of tea. I'm not one for comedy which is why I don't watch Adventure Time. AT not a bad show just not something I can sit and watch.

Well, most Shonen anime is trying to aim for "kids". Like Naruto, Hxh, Bleach, One Piece, Attack on Titan, FMA It's all aiming for the same group of people, namly younger people.

It is not ment for children.

And many of those series listed above, is actually very intelligent, very unique characters and cool villans you actually want to cheer on.

I dont like crybabies, so I almost quitted Attack on Titan and FMA. Bad main characters.

Hunter x Hunter would be my personal favorite(it might appear childish, but it's not. It's very very good), with Naruto without fillers on 2.

Think i saw something about you liking darker animes, so try out Berserk. It might look like an hack and slash anime without any meaning, but its deep with really really good character development. Try to avoid the movies if you can. (they are too short, so you will be missing out on alot.)
The old anime is maybe lacking in animation, but its still sets the mood right for the series, with good background music and showing how the gritty world is.

Re: Anime

Forgot to add, that in almost every Shonen with teens as focus, there tends to be adults in the series who usally is strong, likable and with an agenda for good or bad.

...Perfect Blue is a woman trying to make it as an actress and incidents with a stalker cause her to start losing her mind, Paprika is a therapist who treats her patients in their dreams (very trippy) and Tokyo Godfathers follows three homeless men who find an abandoned baby and band together to take care of it so these are all definitely adult focused...

Re: Anime

I have checked out a few more Animes on Netflix and what is up with the genre 'Ecchi'. Both ones I saw had interesting story ideas, but the main focus being on the whole erotic concept ruined them =/. Is there a genre type that focus on a sci-fi element that doesn't also have some weird obsessions with a girls underwear. Not trying to knock those who like that kind of thing, but I don't get the appeal.

Something that also not like Fairy Tail in which the characters 'level' up at the exact right time. I guess my thing is character driven stories. I'm still trying to figure out what each genre inside Anime is targeted towards.

Also does S-Class have some kind of hidden meaning in Japanese culture? I have seen a couple Animes use the term.

Show I think you might like:

- Hellsing Ultimate
- Psycho-Pass
- Darker than Black
- Death note
- Monster
All good story driven shows for mature audience

Re: Anime

Death Note seems to get recommended a lot. I will have to check that one out this weekend. As for Hellsing Ultimate do I need to see Hellsing to understand Ultimate?
