Re: The NewsroomI hated him so much for how he treated that guy during the Interview... And Olivia Munn is great at her role... And I just love Alison Pill... The Shout-Fest between Sam Waterston and Olivia Munn... Brilliantly done. I love this show. period. Re: The NewsroomI did not know Maggie played the Queen on Pillars of Earth...I knew she looked familar 81 2012-07-31 03:38:39 (edited by marco1475 2012-08-05 20:34:45)Re: The NewsroomThis episode was better, even though it is pretty clear now that the show's main focus will be the relationships and not the news. Not that I mind I do agree about the title sequence as well. It is a great example of how hiring a big name movie music composer (Thomas Newman) can go horribly horribly wrong for a TV show. The title sequence, in its old-timey charm of giving homage to great news teams of yesteryear, is too long and too self-involved and is additionally dragged down by the too simple and long-winded music theme. The West Wing theme got old after a while too (don't all intro themes do that?), but this one is bad from the beginning. Now mind you, I think it can be a great piece of music when used properly. At the end of the pilot, when Will told Mac he got flustered at the college thing because he thought he saw her in the audience and she whipped out her notebook, showing us that it was in fact her in the audience, a slowed-down version of theme was used to great emotional effect. It was also used again at the end of the fifth episode during the reenactment of the Rudy scene in Will's office to a lesser effect. It is still preferable though to Grey's Anatomy-like "slow sad pop song playing mournfully over the last five minutes of the episode" as seen at the end of the fourth episode with Coldplay's "Fix You" playing over the Gifford's shooting and Will's and crew's taking a stand against the network. The writing was relatively strong in that one so I was okay with the pop song overlay, but I am worried they will try it again ... All in all I can't think of any TV show theme music that didn't get boring or trite after a few seasons (all Star Trek incarnations had this problem particularly bad), maybe except for The A-Team or MacGyver I don't understand the need for an extended intro theme anyway, since you get by fine without one (Lost) or you can keep it short and sweet (The Walking Dead) without any issues ... Re: The NewsroomI love the Game of Thrones intro...sets the mood and intensity for every episode... ...and other intros that I have enjoyed: I was thrilled that this latest episode had no romancey crap...and then the ring stuff and the seemingly predictable, over-used, non-segued, blunt topic shift regarding Maggie... ...even if they could keep it to just one romantic storyline to follow...that'd be great... I must say that the guy playing the black/gay man was exceptionally powerful in the episode as well... -Rob Re: The Newsroommarco1475 wrote:
Oi, Six Feet Under buddy, one of the best shows and best intros ever made. He also did the title sequence for Angels in America (and Batman: TAS). And for the not-boring ones: Archer, Buffy, Angel, BSG, Doctor Who, Fringe, Justified, Louie, Mad Men, Parks and Recreation, Psych, Sons of Anarchy, The Killing, like for the longer ones. Re: The NewsroomI liked the intro the first time I saw it. It set the tone for the show imo, but after the first time it's just too damn long and boring. All intro's need to be shorten to 20seconds tops after the pilot imo. 86 2012-07-31 17:08:10 (edited by Quinlan 2012-07-31 17:08:37)Re: The NewsroomI skip it (after a few episodes) so I was kind of wondering why this whole discussion is even happening... ... and then I remembered that some of you watches it on TV when it airs. For example: LOST worked with that "sounds and logo" 10 second Intro. So does Revenge. Other Shows need a proper Intro. Yes, like The Newsroom, like Sons of Anarchy, like HIMYM. What would Roseanne have been without the Intro? How about TBBT without the Intro? Back to The Newsroom Intro: It's a slow Intro, yes. It's a rather long Intro, yes. But it's a good and fitting Intro. Why? Because they try to re-create the News Broadcast from the golden days before Ratings decided what's News and what's not and before Fox News became the Tea Party / Right Wing Republican Network. The Intro is a constant reminder of that. Re: The NewsroomRobcore wrote:
I have yet to see The Game of Thrones intro, because I am currently making my way through the books, so I'll take your word for it I agree that Awake's intro does a great job of explaining the complicated premise in a short amount of time, but I don't think it's particularly catchy or re-watchable. But it was short, which was good. I agree completely with Community and Firefly though, those were great intros. I haven't seen Bored to Death. Orlando wrote:
Batman: TAS had a fantastic intro, that is true, but the music is a variation of the "Batman theme" from Batman (1989) and was composed by Danny Elfman himself [0]. But I agree with you completely when it comes to Archer (I think it has hands down one of the best intro ever - I love the animations and the style), Angel, Buffy, Justified, and Mad Men. BSG was interesting with the percussion-laden "here's what you are going to see in this episode" previews, but I never much cared for the intro itself. Doctor Who is good enough, I guess - I like the music, but it isn't very varied visually. Fringe and Louie are okay. I didn't care at all for The Killing's intro and was skipping it all the time. It set the mood very well, but for a show that had such excellent original music I felt the intro music was very unappealing ... Re: The Newsroommarco1475 wrote:
The intro is brill. marco1475 wrote:
Guess it depends on the person, I enjoyed it very much, along with the aestethics of the intro. Re: The NewsroomThat was a crazy night living in the US. I wish I could say it did more than just lift every ones spirit for a few weeks, but sadly our country still is completely broken. Re: The Newsroom93 2012-08-07 02:35:45 (edited by Quinlan 2012-08-07 02:36:20)Re: The NewsroomSadly, that last episode (7) is one I'll have to forget. Not because of the actors or something like that (Will was damn funny) but because the objectivity of the subject went completly down the drain near the end unlike the previous episodes where they try to reach that ultimate objectivity. At least, that's what was the mission at some point. As of now, ▼Spoiler Good episode in general, boring ending. Myka : You slept with her didn't you ?
Pete : Well... you... you told me to investigate ok ? So... she's unarmed. Re: The NewsroomMixed feelings about the episode, starting to dislike the romance parts. And I agree with Quinland on the ending beeing cheesy, in fact the whole episode. Re: The NewsroomYes it was pompus and all that, so what? It was a massive spiritual success for them, it's not like showing it without all that glory would do any good. Also, nice to see Natalie Morales and Salli Richardson again. And Lisa > Maggie. I think if it wasn't for Sorkins dialogues, the romance would've been a lot worse, at least I can giggle with the entire plane knowing the highschool drama of the trio. HomerS wrote:
Still too smart, you'll be asleep in no time. Re: The NewsroomOrlando wrote:
It's not what I said, I said it wasn't objective on the subject itself. And only the ending. Will repeating the exact words of Obama when at the time, there are (and still is) serious doubts as to whether Bibi is responsible in any shape or form about 911, like I said, we can take it from Obama since that's what he said anyway and he's not at his first lie. But coming from Will & co, that's just a blow to the truth seeking and objectivity mission the whole show is pretending to go for. One word would've changed Wills discourse entirely : "Presumed responsible". Then again, that's a can of worm that this forum is not really the place to open up.
Totally cracked me up. Myka : You slept with her didn't you ?

I disagree. ...it would be like saying that Clinton was just a presumed adulterer. The jury was back on that a long time ago. -Rob Re: The NewsroomRobcore wrote:
ROFL... see ? Can of worm. Clinton admitted publicly in front of the cameras so not really the example. None of the so-called confessions of Osama (wich came years after he said multiple times he wasn't remotly linked to it) or what you call "objective report" (wich frankly is laughable even for some of the victims families) completly removes some reasonable doubts and you don't need to be a conspiracy theorist to question things. Even about his death. So when you say : "the world has known it"... you're overreaching a bit (unless US = the world for you) given the enormous amount of people having different views on the whole thing. I'm not saying that the show should've been entirely different. That they should've put a 10 minutes scene with a wackjob saying it was his mother who flew one of the plane. But like I said, a single word can change the discourse to include (even if it is subtle) the representation of the others. Whether it's the conspiracy theorists or the simple frowning doubters. The others that don't blindly "believe that Angels are real". - Will McCavoy - Episode 1 Myka : You slept with her didn't you ?

There are people that think OJ Simpson didn't do it...based on the same sort of conjecture that you're offering. The problem is, that there is basically nobody else that could have done it. And any that could have, would have taken credit. -Rob Posts: 76 to 100 of 208Forums - Next Episode → TV Show Discussions → The Newsroom |
