Re: Doctor Who 2005

I started to watch the new doctor who in january and it took me about 3 months to watch the first season. It had good moments but some episodes i just flashed by skipping forward a few minutes when it was to boring or cheesy.

The second new doctor is really good though. Season two got a whole new life thanks to him (in my opinion) and the writing is a lot better. I finished it in 6 days where i was sick for 3 of those days and could watch alot of episodes. I am glad i surived the 2005 season so i could watch the 2006 season.

My favourite episode was the girl in the fireplace. It was very well written and the girl playing Madame de Pompadour was both beautiful and acted really well. I almost fell in love.

Fear her was the only bad episode.

Gonna sit down with the season 3 special now. Looking forward to the new girl. I never had the crush so many others seem to have with Rose.

I didn't like her much, but others said she was Tennant's best companion.

Not a scratch on Gillian though! Woof!

Re: Doctor Who 2005

Oh yeah Fear Her that little girl was so fucking annoying that made that episode so unbearable. It was an interesting idea, but that girl and that voice drove me insane the entire time.

The thing about Martha is that to me her story is weird transition from being with Rose. The first 3 episodes are ok, but then there's a lot of time jumping were in episodes they spend months undercover which I know time-travel and all it's just something I find strange. Then there's Donna and if she never talked ever it would have been fine...but she insists on talking in episodes and I want to punch babies afterwards...she's bearable in maybe one episode.

The thing with Martha though is she was in one of the best Doctor Who episodes (Blink) ever made so she's get's an advantage there, and Rose's family was sooo annoying and Donna was sooo annoying and while Maratha's mother bugged the hell out of me we didn't have to deal with her as much as the others so another bonus for her. I wish that either Sally Sparrow or the Lady from Planet of the Dead would have been his companion for a season or two.

So far I would have to say out of all the companions the new one is my favorite there's very little about her that annoys me.

That is true but she's kind of in it, but what I was getting at is the episode happened in that era of time

Re: Doctor Who 2005

you can watch it whenever (after 2nd season I think?)... captain jack is the only connecting point really... i really see no problem with you being unable to follow the show without prior knowledge from dr who...
torchwood is much darker, serious (the last 5-parter especially)

33

Re: Doctor Who 2005

There's really only one real crossover between Torchwood and Doctor Who. But it isn't anything significant. I did watch them at the same time (seasons 3(DW) ans S1(T) have one overlapping thingy), but it really isn't like Buffy and Angel.

34

Re: Doctor Who 2005

Yeah, you don't really need to follow them simultaneously...

I actually found Torchwood a bit boring... until the last five-parter which was fucking brilliant! I do hope that they will carry on in that same spirit...

And by the way, did Torchwood and Doctor Who ever run at the same time of the year?

Nope, the first series was around Christmas and the second ended as Doctor Who began.

The 5 parter(2 years ago!) aired near the beginning of July. That was indeed damn good, being over a week made it too. Don't think it's going to be like that this year as it's being aired in US *sigh*
It is a 10 parter this time though!

single story arch?
in that case wow!

however, dr who is now also aired in usa, and I don't see them corrupting it for us market, so maybe torchwood will remain the same

nivalis wrote:

how about torchwood, is it like buffy and angel, should i see them "side by side" or how you say it? references, interaction? when is the appropriate time to start watching torchwood?

Torchwood is very hard to judge. There is very little in way of interaction, sans Torchwood season 1 finale feeding into Doctor Who's last two episodes of season 3. It was, however, a very nice scene at the end of Torchwood with a fantastic bit of music (and a glowing hand).

Torchwood, other than being an anagram of "Doctor Who" and used as cover name for Doctor Who during its early seasons, is trying to be an adult version of Doctor Who with lots of references to sex and violence. It was mostly meh with very few bright exceptions in the first and second season, even though I felt it was steadily getting better and better. Unfortunately it was plagued by the same "cheese" Doctor Who is / was, only the cheese stands out less in a kids show like Doctor Who and becomes really irritating in a show that tries to be serious and takes it self too seriously.

Having said that, Torchwood season 3, aka "Children of Earth" was a five-part mini-series that was just phenomenal. Suddenly RTD (the guy who revived Doctor Who and was its show runner for the first 4 seasons) grew some cojones and wrote a very daring story with high stakes, important decisions, etc. "Children of Earth" were so good in fact that I recommend suffering through the first two Torchwood seasons just to enjoy it properly - which is something I wouldn't do for the seasons standing on their own.

There is a difference though. Doctor Who is written, produced, and aired in the UK with the same writers, cast, and production since 2005. It is a 100% British show that just gets aired in the USA (usually a week or few months later than in the UK - only this season started airing episodes on the same day).

Torchwood used to be like that, but after season 3 BBC couldn't or didn't want to put up all the money, so the US basic-cable channel Starz bought the rights and hired the head writer (Russel T. Davies) of the first three seasons to write the fourth season 10-episode run. RTD in turn got several American writers to help him (among them Jane Espenson of Buffy, Angel, BSG-fame), but the production - just like the story - is completely American now. The UK cast is coming back, but it is augmented by a bunch of American actors, etc.

Don't get me wrong, I still hope the fourth season is going to be as good as "Children of Earth." The premise seems to be promising in any case, RTD can write great stories if he wants to, and the writers he hired are actually pretty good. But there is no denying the show will be different and will turn into a completely different beast.

There is just no comparison between "BBC America gets to air episodes of already UK-produced Doctor Who" vs. "Starz finances, produces, and airs Torchwood".

Re: Doctor Who 2005

The only true cross over on the Torchwood side is the season 1 finale were Captain Jack hears the Tardis and takes off running which leads into the last 3 episodes of Doctor Who Season 3.

There is a big spoiler in the season 4 finale of Doctor Who regarding the season 2 finale of Torchwood so if you do want to watch Torchwood spoiler free watch the first two seasons before watching the 2part season 4 finale of Doctor Who.

The 5 part mini-series is truly the best mini-series that I've ever watched, and I'm still surprise they were able to get away with everything they did in that season. Torchwood is worth watching for the 3rd season alone and it's much darker then Doctor Who.

Really not much more to say, really. You are completely correct. I agree that Moffat's episodes have always been the highlights of any season and he has been consistently outstanding, RTD deserves credit not only for re-molding the show into what it is now in 2005 after a what, 11 year break, but I also think he was great at overall story-arc and season-long stories. It's just that when it came to scripting the actual episodes something got lost in the shuffle smile

But then of course Moffat starts running the show in season 5 and the overall story-arc just floored all of us ...

Re: Doctor Who 2005

I am really pissed. First Moffat breaks this season into two parts (and the cliffhanger wasn't really that bad to warrant this, so I assume he was forced to do it by the BBC) and then we won't have a full season next year?!? I call bullshit on that. I am very disappointed.

I like that this season is two parts, then there's only a few months wait between new episodes (the two halves), as opposed to the previous 9 month wait.
