Re: the Books vs. the Show

I got increasingly bored with the books.  Could barely make it through number 4.  5 was a little better at least.  I'm sure I'll read the new ones as they come out cause at this point I crave closure, but I'm also sure I'll hate a lot of it.  It just gets old when you spend like 600 pages having characters plan out some big epic strategy and have it all go to shit... over and over again.  Blah blah another character killed off, usually being raped/maimed first.  Martin's original writing style and plot twists were only original the first time.  By the 10th time, it's no longer fresh, or surprising, you just expect it.  It's like "ah! finally this major character gets killed just when you thought things were gonna turn out well, was wondering when Martin was gonna get around to it!"

Maybe that's Martin's genius, I went from loving his books to not enjoying them at all, but I'll still probably buy and read them!

I love the show however and at least as boring as the plot gets, it is still very visually appealing to me coupled with great actors, I can stomach a slow-plot in TV show a lot easier than in a book usually, since I know it's over in a few episodes, whereas a book I can get stuck in that mire for weeks without the drive to get through it.

Re: the Books vs. the Show

I have just finished book 4 and the plan was to hold on a bit for book 5 (even though I bought it last year...)
But as the genius GRR Martin is so good with cliffhangers, I think I have to start it.... a little.... And I have missed Tyrion soooooooooooooo much! tongue
So here's the question: anyone have a link to a digitial copy of book 5? Preferable a .pub-file? (As I said, I bought it last year, in hardback, so it weighs about 5 kilos...)
The site I used to use for .pub-books isn't working anymore...
THANX!

Not sure

Spoiler

That one must be old cause it did seem pretty cold around Winterfell in the fifth book.

Maybe they missed the part of people freezing and starving to death cause of the cold and snow

Re: the Books vs. the Show

so i finally got my act together and started again with the books. this time I started with audiobooks. i have to say. i missed how exciting the books were. i maybe got the same vibe from 1st seaon of the show, but the 2nd season was a utter and complete letdown. it just was not exciting.

Daemons are benevolent or benign nature spirits, beings of the same nature as both mortals and gods, similar to ghosts, chthonic heroes, spirit guides, forces of nature or the gods themselves.

Re: the Books vs. the Show

So, after the second season has finished, should I start reading the books now, or wait.?
Also, do the books correspond to the seasons.? (book 1 = Season 1, etc)

DRM "manages access" in the same way that Prison "manages freedom".

Re: the Books vs. the Show

Yes, and in the second season there are a lot more changes.

Re: the Books vs. the Show

well i finally finished 3rd book for the first time. damn. how awesome it was. i just hope they won't screw up season 3.

if i would not have read first 2 books before, many things would have been quite hard for me to grasp in the series. and book 2 was way better than season 2.

Re: the Books vs. the Show

So.. I decided to jump off the bridge and start reading the books. Beside all the awesome Arya chapters, I was pleased to find Meera described as beautiful and cute as she is in the show!

Bran saw that one was indeed a girl /.../ Though near Robb's age, she was slim as a boy, with long brown hair knotted behind her head and only the barest suggestions of breasts. A woven net hung from one slim hip, a long bronze knife from the other.
/.../
The girl caught him staring at her and smiled. Bran blushed and looked away.

Re: the Books vs. the Show

I think by now in the books we already know some things in the Stannis story that they skipped in the show. I guess this is their way of saying that even if they skipped those parts they are still super important for the story later on so they made something to fix it using Gendry instead as he is the son of the former king and got royal blood.

Well actually i cant really place when that transpired in the books still i guess that is what they are trying to do. Might be using Gendry to remind us that he is one of the few true sons of Robert Baratheon still alive instead of random bastard. That is what i would guess but we need to watch the show to find out about this new addition to the story.

I think u are right. As i read somewhere, they try not to use many new faces for new minor roles, so in this case i think they try to get Edric Storm into Gendry's character (as he is Robert's bastard) and they won't introduce him in the process. Less actors and story keeps going, win-win for them, and i don't think it affects the story at all.
