Re: Alternative to SGU?
Definitely Farscape, more fun, better played, better fx than Andromeda in my opinion. I'd suggest Babylon 5, but they're not travelling far, more like sitting in a space station, which occasional travels around neighbourhood. FIreFly is good also, but short.

well actually it was not SyFy. Metro-Golwin-whatever (sorry a bit drunk can't write the name of the company) announced bankrupsy over 500 million debt so that's why the SGU and SGA movie was pulled off. didn't you read the news?

Firefly and SG-1... King of Sci-fi? No, SG is more light weight Sci-Fi with a comic and less serious tone. ST is the only series (except the orig. series ...) that has a more serious tone and large and complex universe. Star Trek is definitely the king of Sci Fi.

I tend to lean more towards Dr. Who franchises entirety, going with originial, current and various spinoffs..over Star Treks franchise, but just barely. Assuming "IF" I had to crown one...

I really think you should check out Defying Gravity. As mentioned before, the storyline is well developed and from what you mentioned, exactly your cup of tea

I didn't start the flame war! oh, who am I kidding...I totally did edit: to make my point perfectly clear - I'm already sorry I wrote kings of sci-fi, should have known better. Lets just stop arguing about it - open a new topic if you want. Or we could have a poll about it...

Re: Alternative to SGU?
As long as they don't make a mistake by going darker again, I'm in. And I'm hoping for an entirely new series, not Alien Nation reboot. It was a good show, but somehow I can't see it in a new form.

no it isn't. the longest runnning and most successfull sci-fi show is Doctor Who. it's even in the guinness book of records.

Doctor Who was probably running before america was even invented.
DRM "manages access" in the same way that Prison "manages freedom". http://xkcd.com/488/

You know that's not going to happen unless they run the movie franchise into the ground? Lens flares and pretending to be Star Wars yielded a big box office for the new "Star Trek" (which has really very little to do with Trek as we know it) and the studio won't taint the cash cow with a mediocre (production-wise when compared to the movie) TV show. If you're looking for a good sci-fi TV show definitely check out Babylon 5. IMHO the best sci-fi TV show of all time, if you can get past the old (1995) effects and sometimes terrible dialog.

Re: Alternative to SGU?
For other sci fi shows that deal with space... my fave is ST:TNG, but DS9 is good and Voyager has a few episodes that are pure gems. But outside of star trek i would have to recommend the first season of Dr.Who 2005.... when the Doctor and Rose first meet, before trying to view the other versions of the series. Babylon5 for good drama and some retro CG. Defying Gravity worth watching thru to the end. Andromeda skips around a lot but decent space action. Taken is a great miniseries but more x-files ish then anything. BSG mini series ... that started it all... so good. and for a change of pace... go and check out an anime called Cowboy Bebop See You Next Time.... Space Cowboy.

no it isn't. longest running show is some japanese kids show. When the universe was just a fraction of second old that particular kids show had already aired five episodes...
