Re: Civilization V

Well, AI has its perks... I usually play on Prince difficulty, and there is some few strategies that work. First of all I found that for winning on small maps it is absolutely necessary to destroy closest nation asap - that gets you space to spread, and with smart choice of wonders you can compensate the flaws of your nation. But still, AI can just act random and certain amount of luck is mandatory. Also, new random seed on reload in settings is the way to go imho big_smile. Losing an awesome unit on 90 % chance to win is just rude.

I'm excited about new Civ, cause it will make warfare more interesting: no unit stacking and location of your units is becoming crucial. Hopefully Montezuma will bugger off my case now big_smile

can`t realy agree with that so far....

the diplomatic AI is way improved compared to Civ4
the warefare AI seems improved too (atleast i hadn`t any stupid attacks like in civ4) even if the AI has an lack of focus fire
the AI is less aggresive against the players and more aggresive against the computer Opponents compared to civ4... but i have to say that i only testet the first 4 difficulties so far

at all i have to say that this game needs some patching or atleast moding by the community.... not because it`s broken but the balancing is total crap... also i don`t like the spread of ressources so far

Re: Civilization V

My exp. from this weekend:
I played new Civ on Chieftain and Prince on standard speed and it was strange but good all in all. Game pace seems way slower, technologies are discovered in different order, perks of civilisations are very unbalanced (some are really overbuffed, and some you don't know why did they even bother). Roads cost a lot so building them for unneccesary stuff is no no. I love what they did with City states, and taking over a nation (you can make a puppet out of them or annex they city). I'm absoultely satisfied with warfare, you really have to think what units you need and where will you put them. AI cann't act so randomly anymore (war is something you don't do anymore out of boredom smile. Hexes will take some time to adjust to. So will the use of social policies.
Oh and yeah, purchasing units with money is an open thingie right from the start and i think that is a way better then waiting till half of the history is gone till you get universal suffrage.

That's it for now smile

Re: Civilization V

My experiences:
So far i agree that diplomatic AI is better, though arguably more annoying.
Absolutely love the one unit per tile policy, seems more logical and fair and presents a better challenge. One now really does have bottlenecks.
I like that I don't need a shitload of transports to ferry troops (first time i saw that was in Rise of Empires). That being said, naval force seems a lot less important.
I kinda dislike City-States as they seem a little too princessy demanding shit and start to bitch when you destroy too much of them.
I still think fair trade isn't anyone's goal in the game as the AI still wants triple what you offer even if they are small bugs compared to your awesome might.
I really like the surrender terms. Last time the AI, who surrendered gave me 8 cities, all his resources and gold just to stop me from attacking. Although that might have been a clever ruse since i was then spread out thin with a lot of cities in resistance and 2 other civs suddenly going all kamikaze on my ass.

All in all, i'm pleased with the entertainment and i certainly must start with the harder difficulty settings.

So how about as a favor to your truly, who worked day and night on this game, you guys wouldn't pirate it, but buy it instead?

Other than that I'm glad to hear you guys are enjoying the game. Good to know that the many many weekends we put into it paid off smile

Re: Civilization V

I have problem with multiplayer. Hotseat is eliminated so I can't actually buy 1 game and play multiplayer with mine truly. I have to buy two games altho it is one household and we are sitting next to each other and want to play only with one another. To play game on multiplayer users HAVE TO register on online service (which is very correct but that is beside the point) and user has already purchased the original game. Imho, LAN multiplayer could have been available without Internetz at all.

And no more LAN parties for a few of us, what if a guest doesn't own a game sad

I don't mean to come on strong (sorry in advance if i did). What can I say? We would buy the game if LAN or at least hotseat would get the way it was. Standard is low hmm

Re: Civilization V

Question: I never played a Civ game, is the fifth installment a good start for me? Could you explain the mechanics in a dumb down version and to what it is similiar?

Yes!

Orlando wrote:

Explore, expand, exploit, exterminate! Build an empire, protect it and then dominate the others in one of the five fields to win.

Cant really think of similar games. Total war without the tactical warfare, but much better empire management?

EDIT: Hard to explain why it is good. It is like trying to explain why Starcraft 2 is good.

Re: Civilization V

For me it was always the "one more turn syndrome". smile I prefer turn-based strategies and you always have new things to look forward to... new lands, new technologies, new wars. I didn't played Civ V, because my previous PC was too shitty, but I've played a lot of similiar games in the past. Colonization remake was great and Endless Space (Civilization in space) was pretty decent.

Re: Civilization V

If you're going to try it out be careful Orlando. Before you understand how; you might figure that you played for 24-36-48 hours straight without sleep and interaction with the outside world though. Days-Weeks-Months can blur pretty fast into each another playing Civ.

Re: Civilization V

I've played Civ since it first came out on the Amiga many many years ago - the fifth installation is clearly the best so far allthough number 4 is very good aswell but to really learn to appreciate the game and how it has developed over the years I'd recommend playing them all smile

Colonization also was great (played on amiga first then on pc remake), similar but not quite the same.

Re: Civilization V

Finished my first game with the expansion.

Apparently getting cathedrals for your religion is huge when you go for cultural victory, because with out them you will find yourself settling new cities just so you could build a museum just so you would have a place to stash the damn artifacts :S.

Trade routes - yeah getting 50+ production in the city I just founded is nice big_smile.

1st voting session, Venice - 4 votes. the other 5 schmucks (me included)  - 5 votes with no way to change the balance for another 100 turns.

First game in a long time where I did not have religious dominance, all 4 religions had substantial presence. Perhaps it was a coincidence, perhaps better AI, not sure.
