On one hand it's good - it gives the writers and all the production crew some peace of mind that the network appreciate their work and they can focus on making good TV.
on the other hand , financially it's crazy as you can't judge the ratings/demo based on one episode - you could end up like MGM (chapter 11 - bankrupt )

Re: Renewed for a Second Season

You need to know, that cable shows are aired when the season is complete or almost complete, so the company (HBO in this case) can have a look in the season. That it probably why it was renewed so quickly, because HBO in a way goes for quality (though it cancelled some awesome shows because of ratings).

I actually understand that but still , can we count on executives' opinions?? no.
the fact that they like it doesn't mean it will be a good show (and I'm talking in general - not about a specific show).
A case I remember is Jericho - I loved it , it had great plot and could have run for many season and still it got canceled although it had a lot of viewers...

bottom line , there are two sides to every coin , sometimes it's a good thing and sometimes it's not.
If you like those shows it's a good thing because you know the show will continue to air (unless your leading actor gets cancer or something like that...  wink  )

If it's HBO, Showtime or AMC - fuck yes.

Also, do you really think those same executives didn't focus-group this into oblivion? Trust me, they had very solid numbers saying how many people (representative of their customers) liked the show before they renewed it. Also looking at the talent involved (Martin Scorcese es executive producer and director of the pilot, Steve Buscemi and Michael Pitt) I would assume an early renewal enabled them to sign them for another year.

It is true that the end of last season and apparently the beginning of this one were marked by early (I hesitate to call them premature) renewals (The Good Wife, for example), but I have yet to see a pick-up like that as a negative thing. True, Good Wife's ratings slipped once it was renewed and Parenthood basically stormed its slot like it was Bastille, but now Good Wife is holding steady where it left ratings-wise last season while Parenthood took a dive ...
