better Re: You're a chicken!yup, better Re: You're a chicken!Fox screwed with it's time slot, A LOT. Didn't advertise it properly, etc. Here's the reason in short Re: You're a chicken!Re: You're a chicken!By the way... all the "on next arrested development" are not really scenes from the next episode, but should be watched! Took me about a season to figure that one out... Re: You're a chicken!Lol, really? I always turn it off so I won't spoil anything for myself. Re: You're a chicken!BlackBox wrote:
That is a very good question. But I actually disagree with santah's assessment. As much as we would like to blame FOX (and it is the common denominator in a lot of similar cases like Futurama, Firefly and Arrested Development), I don't think it's really fair. The fact is that what we consider "good entertainment" isn't what most people expect. I know it sounds elitist, but after having my heart broken by so many cancelled shows on so many different networks I came to the conclusion it really isn't the network's fault but the audience's. And while I enjoy with David Cross' rant in the posted YouTube video, he is wrong. The list of awards means only that it was a high quality show, not that it had mainstream appeal. And mainstream appeal is all that counts, because that gets you ratings, which allows you to ask more money for ads. I honestly believe that most people (no matter which country they live in) do not want intelligent, thought-provoking and gripping entertainment. They want the most common, derivative and easiest possible way to be entertained. In most cases that means watching idiots parade in front of cameras doing meaningless stuff (like sing or dance) and it gets only better if they are "people like them" and suck at that particular activity. Why do you think are CSI and Law and Order the most popular shows, with nigh world-wide appeal? Each episode is a simple morality tale with a predefined (happy) ending and some thrills thrown for good measure that allows its audience to go to sleep afterwards knowing that all is right in the world. And yes, the one or two episodes every few years, where the bad guy actually doesn't get caught, is hailed as the peak of screenwriting brilliance because it is so "surprising." Seriously, Arrested Development was just a very unlucky combination of hard-to-follow (the cadence of words per minute and more importantly jokes-per-minute was unbelievable), very high-brow humor and somehow also very brash and primitive at times. All this made it a gem, infinitely rewatchable and a hoot, but also requires active audience participation which is obviously asking too much. While I can't say it for Firefly, I think it's a small miracle FOX managed to keep the show on air to give us the three brilliant seasons. I honestly can't fault FOX here, because I believe that even aired in-order and with huge marketing the audience just wouldn't come. (It is true though that real marketing wizzes can sell you anything and make it popular, but they don't work for FOX or any other media corporation.) Re: You're a chicken!Mxyzptlk wrote:
I actually noticed it after episode three or so - hilarious marco1475 wrote:
What you said - except for the marketing. I believe each media corp has its own marketing department, which is used sometimes too much or too less for the one or other show. In the end I think such a show stays on the air as long as it wins awards and holds steady viewers. At least the last one wasn't the case - so it had to go 12 2010-08-13 13:13:32 (edited by kalapkaki 2010-08-13 13:15:53)Re: You're a chicken!bateman was on the daily show couple nights ago and after plugging his new movie with j.aniston(like anyone cares...seriously?!yeah,didn't think so) said that half of the arrested development movie script is already done so they can probably start shooting next year Re: You're a chicken!kalapkaki wrote:
No, that is the sad gist of the problem - for your Joe Everyman, who isn't really paying attention, but working / reading / facebooking / tweeting / texting / cooking / cleaning while they "watch" ... it is. Unfortunately, in today's ADD world really paying attention to what you are seeing is not required for 90% of the fare out there, so nobody does that anymore. Just going to a cinema should be proof enough. Just the fact that you hang around in forums discussing TV shows means you actually care about what you watch and pay attention. So of course it wasn't hard for you to follow Arrested Development. But if you don't give it your 100% attention, it devolves fairly quickly into a very chaotic, very illogical mess. The characters all act according to a very twisted and strange logic, which isn't hard to grasp if you pay attention, but if you don't, they are a bunch of weirdos doing weird stuff that isn't funny - because you missed the set up for the joke that happened several scenes prior etc. Arrested Development is the perfect show that isn't aiming for the most common denominator and is rewarding the attention you give it, even repeat viewings. However, that also means that not paying attention makes it look like an unfunny, incomprehensible mess. That's why it never really had mass appeal. (It could be argued that it never should have had mass appeal, because that's what makes it special. After all, opera isn't for anybody and it is the highest form of the art of singing.)
