The Pillars of the Earth

I can hardly wait for this series, I read it around 95 I think and I still find myself thinking about parts of it from time to time.

The cast looks very interessting!! For me many new names I've not heard about except Ian McShane (which I truly enjoyed in Deadwood) and Donald Sutherland ofcourse.

This just has to be excellent orelse I'm forced to reread!

Re: The Pillars of the Earth

looks promising, haven't read the book tho...

1000 pages, that's like enough reading for almost a week. better get another book from the library aswell...

what doesn't kill you - hurts even more...

Re: The Pillars of the Earth

Moze, sure its not your everyday series since its built on a book which again is built on historical events from a writer that up until then had written mostly thrillers. "To each his own" I believe its called smile

The backdrop is circa the timeperiod often referred to as "The Anarchy" 1100's something (in and around Henry I and King Stephen) and if you're not very interested in architecture and/or history I can see how this would be considered boring.

I however have an interest in architecture or more precise I'm very interested in how they were able to build these magnificent cathedrals not having electricity, no machines, no laser or any of the buildingtools we take for granted today.  (I mean ...some of these cathedrals is HUUUGE). Since I'm also very interested in history and in particular English/Irish/Scottish history, I sure have high hopes for this series.

On Ridley Scott's Imdb page he's listed as "executive producer" on the series which also is "kinda" promising.

Re: The Pillars of the Earth

from that trailer, doesn't look too good.

Re: The Pillars of the Earth

well , IMO it sucked .
I don't know why - probably cause I haven't read the book but this mini series is awful (for the first 2 parts)

Re: The Pillars of the Earth

I watched the first part so far and it diden't suck.
When u have read the book and know what to expect, it's actually not bad made.

But i can assume that 2 hours is a bit much in one sitting, coz storywise it's not the fastest pace.

Re: The Pillars of the Earth

Hehe, I guess it all boils down to what you are expecting, if you've read the book, and what your preferences are etc.

I've read the book(s) as previously mentioned and I must say....oh man what a lovely series!!! Only thing I kept thinking was that the series was much more fast-pace than the book - and I guess it has to be given that theyre doing 1000+ pages in 8 eps.

My judgement:

Damn close to perfect! big_smile
