Topic: 5x10 how to title it? ... I know: AAAAAAAWWWWW, SNIF, SMILE, SNIF SNIF
I admit, I am a sucker for this historical crossovers time-travelling sci-fi shows all eventyually do but that no other does better than Doctor Who. I guess its the brittishness, or rather, more genericly, the europeaness of the show. American shows travel back into wars, or the Kennedy assassination, or the Lincoln assassination, or the Watergate and usually just blunder about ... or they go to Woodstock. Even the good ones. (though the solar flare episode in SG1 was particularly brilliant). There is a sense of respect for the arts in DW, though, that is endearing, emotional. This particular one is filled with references, the mirror like Perseus and the Gorgon (with the Doctor posing and thanking him for the idea briefly in the second to last sequence, fun-ny), all the ramblings about Picasso, Michelangelo and how time passes slow, rsrsrs. Plus, as freak of the week, the monster is so tragic (again reminding of traditiona Greek myth - Medusa, for those who don't know, became a gorgon after being raped by Poseidon in the temple of Athena so the goddess, deeming her unfit and impure to be a priestess, turned the victim into a monster - much like society still so often does to these poor women). The monster in this episode is blind, scared and abandoned, and he dies afraid. This is, thank you Lord, the first episode in the series where the crack in reality is no slapped on our faces, and the character development arc is done in hints. I loved the scene where Van Gogh looks at the smiling Amy and talks about how she's crying because of her loss, a loss, we all know, she can't remember. Ok, so it's overtly emotional, but, then again, this can be a good thing. SIDENOTE: talking about overtly emotional good things, just watched again the excellent 1988 animation Grave of the Fireflies. Those who haven't seen it yet, set your search engines and torrent the thing at once.

Such a lovely episode. Tony Curran was wonderful! The scene with him near the end at the museum with Bill Nighy... simply gorgeous work from both of them. And it was fun too - what more can you want from an episode of Doctor Who.

Dunno, depends what made you lose your faith in the first place. All I can say is that I personally enjoyed it very much.

If you like the encounter type episodes, yes it may. It is, imho, Doctor Who at its best, simple, emotional, down in scale, totally different from what they do the other side of the Atlantic. You should also watch the Confidential.

believe it or not i also remembered that movie while watching this episode for some reason! Anyway the episode was good, better than most of this season but I was guessing that this alien was afraid of the crack , weird they didn't include the crack thing in this episode , but also great cause I have a bad feeling about it

possibly, the cracks do resemble Van Gogh's birds. But that is way mor subtle than they have been this series.

he did have scottish accent, but he also was surprised that Amy had also dutch accent. so they are pulling the dutch accent is like scottish one card. anyway he told that he's dutch, so that's good enough for me.

Re: 5x10 how to title it? ... I know: AAAAAAAWWWWW, SNIF, SMILE, SNIF SNIF
the trick here is iun the TARDIS ... for those who don't know, the Tardis translates your thoughts into the language spoken where you are and also translates, in your mind, everything you see written in the place that is written in that place's most common language. Technically, they were all speaking french and when backtranslated into english, amy's scottinsh accent and Vincent's dutch accent became similar because they would be similar accents "in french". It's a nice little trick, probably if they ever came to Brasil, like Amy's been wanting, she'd sound portuguese while the Doctor ould probably sound like a cross between São Paulo and Rio, tending towards the paulista (São Paulo) accent.

Yep, I know the TARDIS does that, but it should, in theory, make everyone sound the same, accentless if you like. The Doctor is very Queens English, Amy is Scottish, Vinny sounded Scottish, and the women on the cobbled streets sounded like they were from Cornwall or somewhere. Strange, but I let it slide as a) I'm a big Doctor Who fan and b) it was a good episode. Lets have more episodes where The Doctor goes back in time and not forward in time. And lets have some when he's not on Earth. Please.

I like the accent idea. RTDavies played with it in the first episode of the new series, Rose, when she tell him "You sound like you're from the north" to which he replies "lot's of planets have a North" . Also makes for the particulars in production. This episode, for instance, was shot in Croatia. I guess real Auvers sur Oise would be too expensive both because it's in France (obviously but then, more expensive) and becase the town is a somewhat Van Gogh shrine already, with reproducions of every painting he did on the outside there placed roughly at the spot from where it would've been painted. I've been to that church (the real one, not the English one used for filming). Things the episode avoided mentioning that may be of interest is that Monet had a summer cottage there and that most impressionists spent some time or another there eventually chatting with Van Gogh and paying his drinking bill. The place is about an hour of Paris and to all those here who live in Europe or are planning a visit, it is a worthy detour and addition to the gallery at Musée D'Orsai. Fans of XIX painting, it is a must. Oh, yeah, almost forgot, Van Gogh is buried there, alongside his brother Theo, in a grave covered by sunflowers. Almost forgot also, when I visited, there were crows in the fields of wheat.
