Topic: books...nuff said
I know that tv is kind of the lazy man's literature...but I'm sure some of you are readers too. As some of you may have guessed from the other topics I frequently participate in here, I tend to really enjoy spiritual writings...but there are a few fiction books that I've enjoyed over the years too... The last few fiction books that I read were by Paulo Coelho...and they're pretty terribly written, but nevertheless enjoyable at least for their subject matter: The Alchemist, and The Zahir Other fictions I've enjoyed include 'The Catcher in the Rye' (which I haven't reread since highschool), and 'In Heaven As on Earth: A Vision of the Afterlife' by M. Scott Peck (an enjoyable imagining of what concerns people tend to have of what the afterlife might be like through the eyes of a fictional psychiatrist who finds himself aware after dying). My favourite non-fiction books are by Dr. David R. Hawkins...a consciousness researcher and mystic... 'Power vs. Force: The Hidden Determinants of Human Behavior' 'The Eye of the I: From Which Nothing is Hidden' 'I: Reality and Subjectivity' 'Truth vs. Falsehood: How to Tell the Difference' 'Transcending the Levels of Consciousness: The Stairway to Enlightenment' 'Discovery of the Presence of God: Devotional Nonduality' 'Reality, Spirituality and Modern Man' 'Healing and Recovery' (this one is particularly awesome for anyone who's interested in improving their quality of life - whether they're interested in spirituality or not) Other favourites include: 'The Cloud of Unknowing: and the Book of Privy Counselling' (if one is not interested in the subject matter, it is worth the read for the profound aesthetic beauty of the writing itself) 'The Bhagavad Gita' 'I Am That: Talks with Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj' 'The Spiritual Teaching of Ramana Maharshi' 'The Dhammapada' I could name lots more spiritual books, and a whole whack of titles that are more philosophical in nature...but alas, it's late...so maybe later. What books do you guys love the most? -Rob

holy crap rob. this is so wrong. i have read so many books in my life and i can say that i enjoy most of them. i mainly read sci-fi, hardcore sci-fi, alternative history, horror and fantasy. ok lets start naming few of them. Iain M. Banks The Culture series George R.R. Martin A Song of Ice and Fire series. Robin Hobb The Farseer Trilogy Steven King The Dark Tower series Isaac Asimov The Foundation series Dan Simmons Hyperion Cantos series. Jonathan Stroud The Bartimaeus Trilogy Christopher Paolini Inheritance Cycle books. And of course i have read most of Terry Pratchett's Discworld series books. When i was kid i used to read most of Agatha Christie's crime stories. There are ton's more, i'll be adding here as i remember

I read mostly sci-fi too. I don't really have much of a spiritualist side I'm afraid, Rob. My favourite book is Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card. I'm not fussy for any of the sequels or companion books though. I think they just dilute the genius of the original. I also love The Sparrow, and Children of God, by Mary Doria Russell. Which I suppose you could say has a spiritual side, since the main character is a Jesuit Priest. Of course there is the Hitchhikers Guide series, by Douglas Adams, that I'm actually re-reading at the moment. No matter how many times I re-read them all, they still make me laugh. Another series I love, and have read several times, is the Rama Series by Arthur C Clarke. Clarke's not so great at writing believable dialog, but he has a wonderful imagination and can create amazing worlds. I've read lots of the SF Masterworks series too. Which is a great way to introduce yourself to the best of sci-fi if it's not something you've read a lot of. I especially love The Forever War, Gateway, The Book of Skulls, Timescape... I can't even remember what others I've read now.

If anyone likes fictional stories in a non-fictional background, I recommend Liberation Road by David L. Robbins, it takes place in the first 100 days of Operation Overlord and it follows three stories, one of jewish chapelan Ben Kahn, black truck driver Joe Amos Biggs and a man, which we know only by Chien Blanc (White Dog), an airplane pilot shot down over France in '42 (I think). Though the Biggs story is average, I loved Ben Kahn's story, great character development. In case of a history book, I liked D-Day by Stephen Ambrose and A Bridge Too Far by Cornelius Ryan (actually, the second one is still in reading). Oh, oh, and The Dark Tower by Stephen King. How epic is that? Read it like 5 years ago and now I'm thinking of buying it (the whole saga I mean). Speaking of fantasy, anyone read The Witcher saga by Andrzej Sapkowski (yes, a polish dude)?

I read this book while suffering from flu on holiday in America. It's a great book and I hope the film they are making lives up to it.

yes i forgot about those. tho i haven't read any sequals to Ender's Game nor to Rama, but i love the originals. And completely agree with KB that Clarke was magnificent writer. I especially love his The City and the Stars, Space Odyssey novels and The End of Childhood. And i completely have to agree with KB, that it does not matter how many times I read Hitchhiker series i laugh my ass off. There are few Estonian writers who i also enjoy. Pointless to write them down, because they have not been translated to English. and z1rra and kaibren can ask me personally

I loved Ender's Game and I'm currently listening to Xenocide, the third book, and it not good, nor was the second book. I'm still gonna go through all of the sequels cause I just can't stop in the middle.. OCD much..? Before Ender Saga I listened to the Hyperion Cantos. Now those four books go straight to the top of my list. For comedic books, besides the obvious Hitchhiker's Guide, I'd suggest The Zombie Survival Guide and World War Z and of course, The Bro Code. And in case you all don't already know about it, audible.com is an excellent source for audiobooks. EDIT: typos

one Estonian writer who has a book i really love, is Andrus Kivirähk book named "A man who knew the snake words". it's really depressive story but still it's just amazing. anyway that's a book that really got me. but from English writers there's always one series that i have bought all the books: G.R.R. Martin "A Song of Ice and Fire". and even i need to mention Hitchhikers series. and right now can't think any other good books i have read, will add something if i remember something good, what i have read.

it was awesome, why else i mention this , but maybe i got too much into that book, so i always imagine myself as main characters, and looking through his eyes, he lived very depressive life.

Daemons are benevolent or benign nature spirits, beings of the same nature as both mortals and gods, similar to ghosts, chthonic heroes, spirit guides, forces of nature or the gods themselves.

There's some good SF on this list, Ender, Foundation, Forever War, but the best SF book I've read in a while was The Gone-Away World by Nick Harkaway Also some other random favourites of mine include The Killer Inside Me and The Grifters by Jim Thompson Dracula by Bram Stoker A Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole Most of Kurt Vonnegut's stuff The first few Dune Books Fight club and Choke by Chuck Palahniuk The Areas of My Expertise by John Hodgman (Audiobook this one if you can, the guy's voice and delivery are hilarious) There are others, but you get the point.

Agreed with labyrinth. Also, Ender's game, best...book...ever. Also, i'm a sucker for all kinds of fantasy series and i sometimes gobble them up without much regard to quality. What can i say, i like swords... I also like Alastair Reynolds and Iain M Banks (his non sci-fi works are also pretty decent, like Wasp Factory). And don't forget Zelazny and his Amber pentology along with A Night in Lonesome October.
