Topic: Dumbledore vs. Gandalf

So... one has a staff, one has the elder wand.... who is the most powerful?

2

Re: Dumbledore vs. Gandalf

A.  Gandalf would kick the living sh*@ out of Dumbledore.  I'm pretty sure anyone voting for Dumbledore is just a big Harry Potter fan who knows deep down this is the truth.

B.  Worst case scenario: Gandalf dies in the process of killing Dumbledore only to return even stronger and with some snazzy new threads.

Re: Dumbledore vs. Gandalf

C. Even if the wand could match the staff.  You forgot to mention that Gandalf also packs a friggin' sword.

Re: Dumbledore vs. Gandalf

Gandalf, no contest

...where did I put that rat's ass I could give?

Daemons are benevolent or benign nature spirits, beings of the same nature as both mortals and gods, similar to ghosts, chthonic heroes, spirit guides, forces of nature or the gods themselves.

Re: Dumbledore vs. Gandalf

Dumbledore is British! No match at all!

Re: Dumbledore vs. Gandalf

I think this is a so much harder discussion than you people are making it out to be... I mean, I understand that people will vote on what they like best... and with the target demographics on this site, LotR will obviously win. However, I think it's naive of you to make argue for Gandalf, using arguments in the strength of "We want change, yes we can".
These two wizards are, in my eyes, very much alike. A battle between them would cause destruction and devastation to all surrounding members, but I can not decide who I think would win said battle.... They are just too equal.

Re: Dumbledore vs. Gandalf

in response to Mxyzptlk:  I don't think you understand Lord of the Rings and/or Harry Potter.  Dumbledore is a powerful wizard.  Gandalf on the other hand is something closer to a demigod.  He has more in common with Oden from Norse mythology (and Jesus Christ for that matter) than he does with the likes of a Merlin or a Dumbledore.  Dumbledore + Harry Potter + Voldemort = about 15% of what Gandalf is.

But that is only what you have made him out to be... you have no proof or substance for that actually being the case, only your view. And even if people agrees with you it still wouldn't make it true. Unless of course you can put forward some substantial evidence for it... and I'm not saying that that doesn't exist. I'm no expert on Gandalf at all. I've seen the trilogy a few times, but I have yet to read the books. I do however know a lot about Dumbledore.
If you can educate me on what makes Gandalf so much more powerful than Albus, I might be inclined to agree with you... but not until you do that.

I suspect that when paisly wakes up, I'll get more of the answers I'm looking for. Or perhaps Rob or nivalis has something to say on the matter? They all usually explain why they believe something to be true, not just that they believe it's true...

Good way to look at it... Mal removed Xanders eye... does that mean the Mal wins all? wink

Re: Dumbledore vs. Gandalf

No, because Xander survived that encounter and was just as awesome as ever.

Re: Dumbledore vs. Gandalf

Mxyzptlk: Dude, c'mon.  I thought you were gonna put up a fight.  You know, make me work a little.  I was about to go into Tolkien and Lord of the Rings and the Silmarillion and all sorts of fun stuff until I read "I have yet to read the books"  Again, I must say, "c'mon!!!!"  (Although mad props for admitting the truth)  At this point I feel like explaining it all would take the fun out of reading the books which you really should go do.  (There's a lot I want to list, but it would spoil so much for one who hasn't read.)  Since you haven't read the books (especially The Silmarillion) you're just gonna have to trust me on this one thing (which the films don't really have time to completely portray): Gandalf, throughout the LotR stories, is much like Ares or Athena in The Iliad.  (Ares was for Troy, Athena for Greece.)  Either one could have completely wiped out the other army.  The point is that they're gods who aren't really supposed to mess with the affairs of men.  So instead they do little things to push their side along by appearing as humans or giving courage or advice to humans on the battlefield.  This is how you have to look at Gandalf.  If "trust me" doesn't do it for you, read the books.  (That kind of came off condescending, and it wasn't supposed to.  I just don't know how else to put it.)

Re: Dumbledore vs. Gandalf

p.s.  Here's one little bit of evidence that came to mind.  I feel comfortable that it doesn't spoil anything.  Even if wizards in HP are the minority among people, there are enough of them to fill several schools.  (And that's just the kids.)  There are only a handful of characters in LotR with Gandalf's power, and last time I checked none of the "wizards" even had an apprentice much less dorms full of up and comers.  Also (and correct me if I'm wrong on this) but aren't the wizards just special humans (like X-men or Heroes)?  I mean, you can have a kid from a wizard and a regular person.  "Wizards" in LotR are an entirely different race.  Asking if Gandalf could mate with a human is like asking if Superman could make with Lois Lane.  You could argue that it's possible, but most agree Lois (or Gandalf's gf) would friggin' die trying to carry that child if the egg even got fertilized which it probably wouldn't.

edit: I just realized that "race" doesn't work so well in this context.  I should have said "species".

Re: Dumbledore vs. Gandalf

one more thing:

This may do it for you, since you're European.  Everyone who watches futbol knows that the player with one name is always the best.  right?  Is futbol big in Sweden?  I have no idea.

Re: Dumbledore vs. Gandalf

Okay.. Now we're getting somewhere smile I like it..

It seams like there is more to Gandalf than meets the eye wink
The way I look at Dumbledore, is that he is the most powerful and insightful being in the HP-franchise. Let's say, for arguments sake, that Gandalf would beat Dumbledore (from what you are saying, that seams likely). Is there anyone in the LotR-franchise that would wipe the floor with Gandalf?
If there is that, than Dumbledore would, in relativity, be more powerful than Gandalf... but not directly.
Could this be compared to comparing Batman and Superman? Relatively, they are both the powerful superheroes and should in that regard be viewed as equals, but in a direct point of view, Superman would literately wipe the floor with Batman any day...

Do you understand my question? It might be a little vague..

Football is big in Sweden, yes... and Henrik Larsson doesn't have one name... wink

Re: Dumbledore vs. Gandalf

There are a few who could give Gandalf a decent fight as Gandalf the Grey.  (Elrond, Sauron, Saruman, Galadriel, and some really ancient beasts like the Balrog)  As Gandalf the White, I'm thinking he wins all of those fights, most without a decent battle.  I do like your "most powerful in his own fictional universe" argument, though we do have to imagine some sort of Superfriends scenario for this fight to happen.  (like how I pulled in your example?)

Re: Dumbledore vs. Gandalf

albus is a pussy, so yeah, gandalf

Re: Dumbledore vs. Gandalf

i choose Gandalf, the white one tongue

because Gandalf the Grey was pretty weak old wizard, but Gandalf the White was much more powerful.

oh and didn't Gandalf the Grey won the battle with Balrog? big_smile

but from HP field: maybe one death spell would do the trick..

I do believe that you have convinced me.. In a clean fight (and without tweaking the books or characters abilities) Gandalf would in fact be more powerful. I have to take your word for it, and I will do so.
