Life on Mars (UK)

Am I the only one that likes the BBC version as opposed to the US version?

Even with all the U.S. stars they crammed into this, I think the UK version is crap loads better, and knowing the US execs they'll just keep it going till it's canceled anyhow as opposed to the BBC only running it for two seasons with an ending.

Re: Life on Mars (UK)

I haven't watched the UK version of Life on Mars(that I can remember anyway), so I really can't comment upon it. But in general I tend to appreciate US remakes more, simply because they usually have higher budgets, and more stars, which in turn usually offers better quality shows(at least in my eyes). I get why some people think otherwise, but it's just my opinion.

Re: Life on Mars (UK)

not even slightly interested in the us version, i loved the uk version that much.... i heard that when filming the us version they used the scripts for the uk version with minor tweaks, and changed the last five minutes of the 16th episode so they can stretch it out... something to that extent... the producers were raving about this big twist that let them carry the series on past the uk version...

i'm going to eat your brains and gain your memories...

Re: Life on Mars (UK)

See now that's the kind of things that makes me hate US tele, I really liked the UK cast Esp Sam Tyler and Gene Hunt.
It was a standup show, and shoulda just re-aired here in the US rather than being remade.

Re: Life on Mars (UK)

great show!

Re: Life on Mars (UK)

I have to admit that the US version is kinda nice. After a few cheap UK remake episodes which weren't great, the US show feels different.
Naturally nothing can beat the original Gene Hunt with Sam Tyler or his successor Alex Drake in the sequel Ashes to Ashes.

And I totally disagree about the star and budget theory. First there is good writing with a good story line then there is good acting by a good and maybe unknown actor. If this is well done the show will fly. But if you have weak writing you can throw a big budget at stars and still get a bad show. And on top of this you can't just translate a cultural themed show like Life on Mars one to one into a US version. Or can you imagine an American Doctor Who?

I completely agree...esp since the US loves to just throw out money at their entertainment and think that's ll do it....I mean look at the crappy movies.

Wild Wild West - Will Smith.....er uhh that's all that comes to mind....a little too much at happy hour to drink.

But I think that guy that played Sam Tyler and did the guest part in Dr. Who is a great actor.... and an american Dr. Who...Not acceptable, just like they will never be able to make an american 007. It just doesn't work, they refuse to stop trying with mission impossible..Tom Cruise is not Bond.

Shows what great actors we have in the UK when Mr Glenister makes Mr Keitel look like a 5th rate hack.

Re: Life on Mars (UK)

yes.. Indeed, script has to be good too. Still, too low budget can make a show seem amateurish, no matter how good the script is.

Not putting Life on mars UK down, just speaking of in general

Re: Life on Mars (UK)

Just got the 2 seasons of Life on Mars smile It's been on my queue for a while now and just got the time to watch it. After this what should I watch ? The spin-off (Ashes to Ashes) or the US version of the show? I'm talking about the order of course.

It's about time!!  big_smile  big_smile
I enjoyed the original version (UK) more than the US version.
In viewing order , I'd say watch the two UK seasons first - don't start with Ashes To Ashes (IMHO).
I didn't really connected to Ashes , so you can choose it or the US version BUT in any case , start with the UK version of Life On Mars.

Re: Life on Mars (UK)

Oh , sorry , just saw you asked about the viewing order after Life on Mars...
So , I don't have a definite answer , as I said , I didn't really connect to Ashes but it is a continuation to the time line...
The US version is just like the first season of The UK version just with American actors....

Re: Life on Mars (UK)

It's a good show, and I really liked the ending, quite clever.

Far more impressed with the ending to Ashes to Ashes than I was with Lost.

That's the second biggest X I've ever seen.
