Topic: Best big showrunner?
Behind every good TV show is the person who created it, and runs everything behind the scenes. Everyone on the list I've chosen have each created at least two successful TV shows over the years. Who do you think has done the best job? Consistent quality, interesting characters, the best storylines. Who's your choice?

Re: Best big showrunner?
Again, as always, there are too many choises... I picked Seth MacFarlane because Family Guy is just the best...
...where did I put that rat's ass I could give?
Daemons are benevolent or benign nature spirits, beings of the same nature as both mortals and gods, similar to ghosts, chthonic heroes, spirit guides, forces of nature or the gods themselves.

Can't go wrong with Whedon.

Re: Best big showrunner?
I gave my vote to Whedon as well, because he's never disappointed me. However, I do think David E. Kelley is missing from the list - creator of Boston Public, Boston Legal, The Practice and Ally McBeal. I love his way of keeping all his series in a universe of its own

You left out the daddy of them all. Dick Wolf (Law and Order franchise).

You left out a lot of famous ones. Besides David E. Kelley and Dick Wolf, here are some others, off the top of my head: - Alan Ball (Six Feet Under, True Blood) - Steven Bochco (LA Law, NYPD Blue) - Rob Thomas (Cupid, Veronica Mars) - J. Michael Straczynski (Babylon 5, Crusade, Jeremiah)

Ooh, I didn't know Rob Thomas did Cupid. Interesting. I have to admit, I did think about Alan Ball, but my personal bias kept him off the list - I'm not a fan! I'll agree with you on the other two though - well thought of!

Huh, I must admit I didn't think of him. Probably because I have never watched any of the Law & Order franshise ever! He just didn't even occur to me. Good one though.

Re: Best big showrunner?
I dont know what big is in this context. But The stargate guys gotta be in this category. Jonathan Glassner Brad Wright i mean. I dont really think any of them should win but still. The longest running shows are often not that good anyway, If 4-5 seasons counts this open up a bit. Lite Lexx and Farscape. Arresten development is the absolute top but it has only 3 seasons.

Re: Best big showrunner?
yeah, they all have a lot to answer for... but Whedon's a hands down winner... and to whomever listed Cupid, et al... the op said 'successful' shows... Alan Ball's alright, but from what i saw of the first ep of TrueBlood... no success coming there i'm afraid.... and Cupid... the show soooo successful they HAVE to try again a second time...

Re: Best big showrunner?
And the winner is... kind of predictable really. Well done to Joss Whedon with 24.1% of the vote. But it was closer than I thought, with JJ Abrams coming in second with 23%. I wonder if the answer would change once Fringe and Dollhouse have shown their first seasons...

Re: Best big showrunner?
but does JJ really qualify as a showrunner.... it's pretty well documented that he never had more than a pinky in the Lost pool after the pilot, so what, that leaves the girl with the hair show, and the bank one... and yeah, they were both memorable... methinks JJ should be disqualified...

Well Dollhouse doesn't start until January, so it would probably have to be May. But I might just do that. theConundrumm wrote:that leaves the girl with the hair show, and the bank one...
... o.O That's how you describe Felicity and Alias? Interesting. But no, I wasn't really thinking about Lost with him. Damon Lindelof and Jeffrey Lieber have done all the hard work. But those two, and now Fringe - I think he qualifies.

Re: Best big showrunner?
yeppers... that's how i describe Felicity & Alias... mostly because i just couldn't think of their names and didn't deem it worth looking up... but yeah, maybe he DOES qualify.... i'll eat shit on that one, or plead ignorance... whatever works [as soon as i saw the name Alias in your post i had that 'oh shit that show was pretty popular, wasn't it?' moment... unfortunately i was home alone so no-one actually witnessed that rare moment of humility ]... and i wouldn't be too quick to call Fringe a win yet... i liked it, but about six months ago i said enough to the 'big bad corporation' doing dirty deeds under the publics nose show/comic/whatever... and surely i wasn't the only one [and for a good take on the BBC check out Grant Morrison's 'Marvel Boy' graphic nov... aw fuck, it's a comic...] and honestly, napping aside, Fringe had me hooked up until that reared it's head... [The Middleman, however... playing it perfectly.... but what would you expect ]... my end of the day overview of JJ is basically this... he's an over-rated, decidedly average director, lousy at writing dialogue... but the plotting and high octane concepts.... he knocks them out of the park... but as always, karenbear, you are right....

You assume I don't actually agree with you. I enjoyed Alias for what it was (mostly I just liked Jennifer Garner in all those different disguises), but I'm not a big JJ fan or anything (I've never watched Felicity, and I'm giving Fringe a change - will have to wait and see), and I certainly didn't vote for him - I just feel he has earned a right to be included in the poll. And I am always right!
