Ok, I am just here to settle this....although I am a MAJOR superman fan and have collected all kinds of comics for years...I just want to point out that in a fist on fist brawl superman will DEF kick Batmans ass!!! however, Superman, as the dumbass that he is (dont get me wrong, my loyalties lie with supes over The Bat ANYDAY), gave Batman a bit of remaining Kryptonite in case he ever went 'bad' - so bats will be able to stop him.
The comic story goes as follows (the VERY VERY short version): Years early, Superman gives Batman kryptonite, Superman and Batman are friends - all personal and shit, sharing secret identities and all that crap, Superman goes bad and starts tearing up the world, Batman doesnt want to use the kryptonite but he has to stop Superman, Batman whips out the Kryptonite - beats the crap out of Superman, Superman becomes good again.
And there you have it,
Superman VS Batman Fist on Fist - Supermans kicks Batmans ass
Superman VS Batman with Kryptonite - Batmans kicks Supermans ass
So it remains to be seen that the only way Superman can beat Batman is with his powers, however, Batmans fighting skills are alot more superior than those of Superman!

I have been here awhile and I agree with Nightcrow, I would have never opened this thread with that title, but now that I am here lets clear it up.
Nightcrow pretty much nailed it on the head but I'll throw in my two cents as well. Everyone knows that Superman could literally kill Batman with his pinky finger, that's not the debate. My point is that Batman would never get in a fist fight with Superman unless he had something to even up the odds, ie Kryptonite or even Magic. Batman is extremely paranoid and in almost every comic I've read that has both of them in it, it always makes reference to Batman researching ways to stop Superman if he ever went bad.
I have read numerous comics where Superman and Batman have battled (usually b/c one of them went bad or was possessed by someone) and the outcome always depended on the situation. Both have been beaten to a bloody pulp by the other many times. My favorite fight has to be in Batman: Hush. (look it up for a great read). Basically Superman goes bad, Batman uses his kryptonite ring to try to stop Superman but it's harder than he thought it would be.
Anyways, I could go on and on but lemme just end it with this...
Superman (under his own will) would never fight Batman, but Batman (under his own will) would possibly fight Superman and has protocols set and ready to go for the day that he needs to.

Lol - that was the story I was quoting in my post - I made it VERY brief though - I just didnt think anyone had read it!! I LOVED that comic - prob one of the best crossovers ever!

Apart from the fact that they did actually fight in "the Dark Knight returns" and who would have guessed it?? Bats knew the day was coming eventually, and had prepared for it with kryptonite powered weapons.

But thats not the point, the whole point is that Superman has never had to work for anything, he's super, everything has been handed to him on a silver platter, loving parents in clean smalltown america...blah blah blah its all just too easy, no one can hurt him!! whats so challenging about that?
While Bats in the other hand had his family murdered in font of his own eyes as a child. He has no super powers, just his own determination and hard work! I'll take the mere mortal that kicks ass through hard work anyday!!

Batman HAS worn the ring of Green Lantern and in the past, Hal Jordan was able to make Kryptonite with his ring... (it being green and all I guess)...
So, all Batman has to do is ask to borrow the ring for 10 seconds.

...but from a distance, Supes just uses his heat vision to melt off Bats' fingers, and the problem is solved. Supes takes the ring, and makes a green force field around himself that nullifies the effect of (green) Kryptonite, and the battle is over.
