Trailer looks properly butchered, but expensive, so will check it out.

Not sure why they need to do this, name your modern show Gold Island Turbo Plus, give different names to characters, the rest will be messed up far enough from the original to pass as your own.

Re: Treasure Island (2026)

If you're gonna rename it Gold Island Turbo Plus, just make it an anime and give the talking parrot a bigger part. big_smile

I'll watch the first episode, but Mommy convinces Jack to join the pirates? And she, um, "keeps her virtue" amongst all those men of little lawfulness? Right.

It does, however, give me the opportunity to shout, "Hoist the flibberty-gibbet and batten down the barrel boy!"

If you're even remotely interested in this I'd highly recommend Black Sails https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2375692/

Yep, Black Sails is one of the best pirate TV shows/movies ever.

God I miss that show, really wish they'd gotten another 2-3 seasons to really flesh things out instead of doing the time jump.

This is weird with his mom though. It's been a long time since I read the book, but I remember it as more of a coming of age story where a boy becomes a man.

Also quite familiar with Black Sails, but thanks anyways smile

Black Sails edged itself into my brain with the (to my knowledge) only depiction in movies or TV of an seemingly accurate keelhauling. That scene was brutal. smile

I love everything pirate-related, even the not-so-good ones like Cutthroat Island or Crossbones (this one was hard to watch though, boring af).

This could've been a good sequel for Black Sails, it was basically set-up for it. But somehow we never got a real one.

Sandokan wasn't half bad either. Had Batiatus from Spartacus playing in it. Unfortunately it was also a cartoon a long time ago and they referenced it a few times.

There's not enough pirate media out there...

I'm a pirate fan myself. Read several non-fic books about them when I was younger. I *love* the theme song and intro scene to Black Sails! I know it's CG, but it looks so real. I kept pausing it to look closer.

Interesting choice for Long John Silver... 🙄

Looks kind of daytime TV-ish. Not at all the quality of Black Sails.

Why is it an interesting choice for John Silver?

I just re-read the book. She does convince him to join them, and insisted they not take more gold than they were owed from the dead captain in her inn, which probably saved her son's life later. Honestly it's only book inaccurate if she goes with them on the boat. Then yeah that's a fairly huge deviation from the source material.

Also two points of interest. The parrot that John Silver had was named Captain Flint. John Silver wasn't black, but his wife was. When the book was published in 1883 marriage between a white person and a black person was illegal. Which is interesting because Silver was kind of an anti-villain. Sure, he was a pirate, and sure he was obsessed with the gold, but he treated Jim almost like a son, and saved his life on several key moments in the book, and ultimately honored the deal with him.

Re: Treasure Island (2026)

got to love a good pirate show...
pirates of the cashflow and black sails are really only the ones worth watching.

i really hope this is good.
or i have to go back to one-piece..and that is pirate in name only...

even most of the pirate books are pretty bad...
( best being "the gap cycle" and that is sci-fi and only adjacent)

cannot stand a pirate story that is all flowers and happy endings..

pirates were the first democratic organizations in the new world
and the first organizations where women could lead men

Re: Treasure Island (2026)

I can't really get much of an impression from that frenetic trailer but I loved David Oyelowo in Bass Reeves and who doesn't like Haley Atwell?  The director Robert Murphy has almost no track record based on IMDB so that's odd he'd get a large budget series like this.  3 directors (2 ep each) whose work includes:  Hot Fuzz, Slow Horses, Sherlock, His Dark Materials & Shameless (Brit version).  Hard to say but I'll keep me hooks crossed in hopes it be smart as a whip and sharp as a cutlass.

I'm hooked. Look forward to seeing what happens.

This was...underwhelming...

Most of it was boring and looked as much.
Jim is a completely passive character - so far he didn't really add anything to the story.

It's kinda missing everything I want from a pirate adventure.
I mean it was there...you just didn't feel any excitement for it, everything was just bland.

The only good thing about the episode was Hayley Atwell... smile

Gonna give it 1-2 more episodes...
