A Reacher spin-off series focusing on the iconic hero's friend and former military colleague Frances Neagley.

trailer looks quite good

Re: Neagley

Lots of running in that trailer. Only 3 comments on YT right now, 2 of them snarky. But I love Neagley and Damon Herriman is quite an actor. He's one of those that I go, "Who *is* that guy?" and when I look him up it's "Oh, yeah! I loved him in [x]!"

I'm in.

I have Sight Line by Dan Ames, but I'm afraid to read it because I want Neagley to be Maria Sten and not the image on the cover, especially the 2nd one. Petty, I know.

American kids learn the mnemonic HOMES for the Great Lakes. By Executive Order it's now SHAME.
Bravo.

Re: Neagley

Not bad at all. Season 2 should be interesting if we get it.

Now what the heck will I watch? Reacher done Neagely done. Any ideas?

Re: Neagley

i am struggling with neagely and i am on ep3.

it just is not having a grip on me to keep watching.
the storyline is not enthralling, and i just cannot find the
desire to care about the out come that much.

acting is good, like all the actors so far. at least i dont hate anyone.
writing is not as good as reacher, they are still "finding" the soul
of neagely, which always take a little work in the first season.
( reacher never had that issues they had 20+ books to work with)

but they really need to make me care about the plot about the people
and they have yet to do that.
i hope it gets better soon.

Wait... Huh?  Did you really marathon the entire first season in one night or something?

Yup, finished Reacher first, then power watched Neagley. When you are retired and only sleep 2-3 hours a night, you can afford to do stuff like that.

Re: Neagley

Watched (only) the first episode so far...

First half of the episode felt rather weak...didn't like the setup and what kind of story it is - but they hooked me with the second half smile

▼Spoiler

So this is taking place right after Reacher Season 4? Why not end Season 4 with a phone call from Neagley asking him for help on that kidnapping...anything but him just being there (without any visible scars btw.) and disappear right after...

I get that Chicago is a big place... but for a former MP, the daughter of a retired police office and a P.I. in that city I would've expected she walks into that precinct and everybody knows her.

The (professional) relationship with Cop-boy...sure goes fast. In fact everything goes pretty fast, I checked twice during watching that playback speed isn't accidentaly set at 1.25 smile

Deserved more runtime:
Abbys | Dead Like Me | Devs | Firefly | Gangsta. | Jack of all Trades | Kevin (probably) saves the World | Lodge 49 | Mrs. Davis | NYC 22 | Powerless | Roadkill | Special Unit 2 | Stumptown | Surface | The Brave | The Crazy Ones | The Finder | The Middleman | Truth Seekers | Two Weeks to Live | Whiskey Cavalier

You can expect that feeling from every new series. They have to set up the main story and characters. I have only seen it done superbly twice. Just wish I could remember what series.

Re: Neagley

5 episodes in and it is just not interesting to me.
the writing is just not as good as reacher
the suspense is lacking, maybe we know too much too soon
i am not invested in the main story, the neagleys big mystery phobia cause
or the good cop trying to define himself.

maybe the subject matter is the problem, its 5 years too late for that story line.
there has been far too many "addicts used as test subjects" stories for this one to matter
the "farm" has been done to death also, and this one has no intrigue there.
"the farm" has been a  Euphemism for death since before i was born.
there is nothing here that is new, done new, done well, written well.

i will come back for season 2 to see if it works,
this one is not worth my time so far..

the actors all did fine and i hope they are back for season 2
this series needs some work though. its is b grade. at best

That problem comes with age. You have seen so much that almost nothing seems or appears to be new. Welcome to old age. smile

i dont think i can agree with you.
recently i started reading old crime story and pulp fiction books from the 30's and up
( mostly short stories and anthologies)

now the main plots are not new, but everything else is.
the rough manner of writing is far less skillful then today but its not less interesting.
the manner people talk and the way they think are like another world
( which it really is)
nothing is new in these books, but everything about the style is new, fresh, original.
(for me) the passion for the story is almost palpable

it was pulp fiction 100 years ago. but the writers put their soul into their work
their passion and experience, everything they were.

i am sure only the above average stories from a large mix of writers are in these books,
not the very best, but better then most. and it shows.

we dont see much pulp writing anymore, we see targeted polished generic copies and clones.
even the lowest writer can have AI or a editor "punch up" a story using common ( and overused) tropes.
it is easy for writers to clone the feel of other popular writers.

most of neagley feels that way to me.  soul less.

reacher may not have the same team of writers ( i will have to look)
but they feel much different the two shows.

the writing in neagley feels more like a payday then a passion
at least to me.

and i need to feel that passion in a story from the story teller.
if they are not passionate about it, why would i want to see it?

hopefully its fixed in season two.

If I have to explain what I mean all the time, maybe I should stop posting here.

I was referring to the plots, ploys whatever, have become known. So you can guess quickly what the plot really is. I do not require a 3 paragraph long explication of what you thought I meant.

Sorry you cannot get passionate about the show. But that sounds like a you problem.

I can like the show and not give two bleeps about it. That is just me. Not everything is a 3 page essay.

i explained in the 3 page essay that KNOWING the plots, ploys quickly is not the issue.
( it takes me about 3 minutes to write 3 pages and 20 seconds to read it)

i will make it simple for you.
in neagley the writing is uninspired.
if you cant copy old crap and make it feel fresh
it does not matter who you get to act it out.

and poor writing is a show problem.

but if you are happy with stale bread and water. great for you.
few could live that way. fewer would want to.

1. I do not consider this show stale bread. Good analogy though.
2. You do. That means it is a YOU problem.
3. Poor writing? Are you currently working on a show? Are you secretly a writer and did not tell us?
4. And who are you to tell me what food I like? (insert sarcasm)

You are posting opinions, which is cool. You are entitled. But the harder you try to convince me, the more I resist.
So lets just stop replying to each other and walk away. Obviously we both have different tastes and expectations.

Do me a favour, and do not bother replying to me again. We are done. I cannot work with someone who is as rigid as re-bar, and feels the need to post large sections of text.

Discussing TV is kinda like talking about food or art. Everyone's tastes are different, and subjective. Does not mean we are wrong, but it also does not make us right.

When it comes to us we will always be right. But others not so much.

The fun part comes in us being able to discuss the same topic with our own baggage. There in lies the rub. For some reason you rub me wrong. And to keep things civil I will simply skip your posts. This way I won't keep the mods busy and hurt anyone's feeling.

Good joust mate. Take care piraterepublic.

i dont think i can agree with you.

I do.  I'm 60 and I know my age is greatly influencing my enjoyment of most shows. I've lived through better scripts, better directing, better acting, even on low-budget sets/projects. Its impossible to like modern Trek because I lived through good Trek.  I know as soon as I see certain actors that they will be the 'surprise' bad guy because in the last 20 parts they've played that's what they were used for.  I know with 80% accuracy where the script is going for the rest of the season about 1/2 way through the first episode.

Doctors can't enjoy medical shows.
Cops can't enjoy police dramas.
And so on because they know the reality of those fields.  Same with age and history with the area of entertainment in general: Us oldies just know where its all going.  **AND** we've probably seen someone somewhere do a better job so its frustrating to see lazy work.  If you've seen Firefly or Space Above and Beyond, you know where a good sci-fi space epic could go if the writers are good and they have confidence in their own creativity. Then you see the lazy stuff but see the potential of what it could have been.  Having one's frustration level double because you've seen better is the cost of doing business as you age.

I sometimes think a combination of generational and societal upbringing.  But I feel that way for a large number of people I interact with on the 'net'.

A 60 year old, raised in the USA midwest as the fifth and final kid of a navy vet turned tradesman after the war, that was already on retirement when I entered 8th grade... raised on his job sites after school... service and patriotism and work ethic as keystones of growing up - is not going to be the same as

  • A 30 year old liberal from New York

  • A 50 year old from Greece

  • Someone raised on a 600 acre Montana ranch

and so on.  Even two people of the same age and country are going to be wildly different in what they feel a "normal outlook" is if one was raised in L.A. and one was raised in the farmland of Illinois/Ohio.

I think of it like the idea of "Men are from Mars, women are from Venus" in that our dictionaries aren't exactly the same.  So same kinda differences between military folk, and civilians.  Americans and Brits.  etc.

There's no negativity from me about differences.  They're just differences.

True. It just gets frustrating when the people who do understand you, get fewer and fewer by the year. And you are looking up new terms all the time. It is like being left behind.

Also your language gets slowly eroded. Stuff you could say 10 years ago, can now not be said without a trip to H.R..

Re: Neagley

Watched a few episodes. Not too cringy, neurodivergence angle excuse her rigid acting, plot holes not too bad, overall cast good. Watchable.

It's cosmopolitan/metropolitan detached from reality centers and normal people. Exact same everywhere, and don't need to be another country/state - some 20-30 km distance already is enough smile

Re: Neagley

i am going to assume you are all so old that you do not realize that anyone over 18 years old has had 8 years of unlimited access
to every show made in the last 50 years and 3 years locked in their house where they could not go anywhere. any show better than 3 stars and much much worse has been seen by anyone with more then 20$ to pay for streaming or youtube
history and experience means little when every answer to any question is in your pocket.

if you can accept lower quality products than great for you.
and if you accept that low bar of quality, that only shows what you are ok with
the same people who make reacher made neagley.

there is zero excuse for it to be as low quality as it is today.

( unless you are cable and you are saving money to pay your pensions off before your network croaks)

no, old trek and other shows are not always better, the ducks of hazard and macgyver in the 80's was utter crap, ST-TNG only looks good compared to that low low bar of supposed quality. 23 episodes where half were acceptable 5 were great and the rest was junk.

if those old shows were so much better back then, today's generation (with full access to all those shows) would be harping on it day in and day out on social media, and if no one else, then the introverted nerds would be all over it. THEY ARE NOT. only a few people are. ( and yes there are lots of today's generation who rave about the best of yesteryear, classic movies and classic music and some tv)
people have a tendency to remember the best about things in the past because they block out the negative.
the world has moved on for good reason.
the best of today vastly outshines the best from the past.
the best that is remembered for the past was thought good because it was new back then.
there is less new today, but not less ways to bring old thing back in a new way
( the odyssey is an example of a old story being retold ( cant say "well" yet i have not seen it))
neagley is like a gasp from the past.
so many desperate attempts to reboot an old idea but done poorly
( reacher was a reboot that was done well)
mediocre at best

btw i have lived both rural and metropolitan on the west coast of north america my entire life. ( 50/50mix)
but tv has never been my life, i have never had to see a new episode of anything over being out in the world.
i have only been in a theater maybe 10 times in the last 36 years, and i do not regret it.

neagley was sub standard, in a world where fantastic is everywhere.

Neagley is a watchable a bit above background noise show, such shows were produced countless before and will be also in the future. Reacher also is on the same level. If it would not be profitable to make them, they would not be made.

I have full access to every show, movie whatever (and even wider than most, since I can see also a lot of non-English). Old and new. And statistically it's absolutely clear that in past decades there was a way higher concetration of good shows. Why some 18 year olds are not watching something from 2015? Because they don't know what to watch. And are bombarded with their doom scrolling feeds, have fried brains and a miniscule attention span. Sure, in general almost every metric is better in 2026, but NOT all. This planet peaked a while ago, here proof: https://www.oecd.org/en/data/dashboards … kills.html - ppl are getting dumber and shows as well, because they are made by ppl smile

And btw that Reacher style stating the obvious is an adaptation for "modern audiences" (those around 18-25) so that: 1) They don't get lost in 3 trees; 2) Can watch it while... scrolling on their phones smile
