Re: Lanterns [Crime, DC Studios]
I enjoyed this episode. However I am getting tired of this happened in the past. Lets see some present stuff. Also I don't look for woke, I think you guys made that crap up. No one can explain it to me, where it actually makes sense, so it must be fake.

There was another show that went back and forth. It was a damn good show, but drove me nuts. Person of Interest. I tend to lean towards anything J.J. Abrams's or Bad Robot production.

Episode 103 of Lanterns is woke and racist because: ▼Spoiler The green lantern ring came to John Stewart Sr.'s house and asked him if he was afraid, and he said yes, so the ring left and found Hal Jordan and he became Green Lantern instead, which is supposed to suggest that black men are afraid to live in America so they do not receive privileges whereas white men are not afraid to live in America and receive all the privileges. I didn't take it that way, as the Stewart's are not portrayed as marginalized, victims, or poor, but fairly well off and happy, living a good life in a nice house. I just thought John Stewart Sr. was scared. Apparently it meant white privilege as white men aren't scared of green glowing orbs in their room and not scared to live in America, which of course is extremely racist and shallow of the TV show writers to suggest this, as there are plenty of black men who would not have been scared when the ring came to them, and plenty of white men who would've been. This type of race baiting is the definition of woke. They are portraying the black woke family as psychotic, clearly beyond the limits of what child and family services would allow, and deserve to lose their children, all to tell a story about systemic racism and not The Green Lantern.

I can. On behalf of the entire white race, ▼Spoiler I'd like to apologize to the Stewart family. This show might actually knock Lindelof's Watchmen out of first place for the most racist TV show in modern day, lol
What makes you think both shows are racist? I - for example - really liked that https://next-episode.net/watchmen powerfully referenced the 1921 destruction of Greenwood in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Dropping their kid off at night in the middle of a black neighborhood because its the scariest place they can think of seems pretty racists to me lol

I am sorry, but my mind does not think like that. The only thing that I found disturbing was ▼Spoiler the dad shooting the apple from his sons head. Its like a dirty joke, that you only understand if you think a certain way. And you do not get it, till it is explained to you. And afterwards you cant help but think that way. Not saying that anyone who does is twisted, just that I feel sorry for you.

Re: Lanterns [Crime, DC Studios]
proteinnerd wrote:What makes you think both shows are racist?
Lindelöf, in usual fashion explicitly reimagines the Green Lantern's selection process around American racial hierarchy. John's mother confronts a Guardian & insists that it's unfair to test a black man for fearlessness since black Americans live with constant racial fear & that white people don't. This is presented as the reason John’s father failed the test while Hal Jordan succeeded; quote "...you can't wake a black man up at night & ask him if he's scared!", lol. This reduces Hal’s canonical qualifications of willpower & the ability to overcome fear to good old unearned white privilege, while treating black fear as an inherent, systemic condition that the Guardians failed to account for, much like giving the mother a huge diamond as a reparation gift which caused here to be viewed with suspicion when she took it to a pawn shop. (Yeah, white people could easily pawn that massive stone). The result is a narrative that casts white success as suspect & black experience as uniquely victimized by design. This proves the show’s broader pattern of subscribing to "racial essentialism". Earlier episodes have characters stating that “white men have the privilege of being eccentric” & that rich white men “can do whatever the fuck they want.” John’s entire childhood has been rewritten as a deliberate racial conditioning project: his parents drill fearlessness into him precisely because he is black & must therefore work twice as hard to earn what Hal received so easily. This turns a character whose classic stories already contained political awareness into a vehicle for modern identity politics, making race the primary lens through which every character decision & power dynamic is judged. I started reading Green Lantern & Spiderman in first grade, 1970. This was the time when GL was changed to reflect a social warrior story arc which, tbh, was nowhere near as crazy as this show is. Finally, the show is racist in the opposite direction of what its defenders claim: by centering white privilege & systemic anti-blackness as the hidden logic of the Green Lantern Corps, it treats racial grievance as 'cosmic truth' rather than one family’s warped perspective. The Guardians are shown as needing correction by a black mother’s lecture on Earthly racism, & John’s path to the ring is framed as a kind of reparative outcome for his father’s earlier exclusion. This isn't nuanced social commentary it's a one sided rewriting of story canon that assigns a moral & narrative superiority according to race. Watchmen was exactly the same on these identical points. If you haven't yet seen the round table interview with black female writer of ep03 VAnessa Baden Kelly & actor Alphonse Nicholson (John's father), it is off the rails crazy listening to them promote the actions of John's parents as "this is what it takes to succeed in racist America" & "what an amazingly strong black mother she is". Imagine my surprise after being mortified by the actions of his parents, watching them behave like the abusive monsters they are & then seeing the interview where they interpret the story arc of the parents as being this great noble endeavor. Edit: Here's a great take on ep03 https://youtu.be/zubPli8-B40?si=tbxFGpu5CqI7Lpj6

Re: Lanterns [Crime, DC Studios]
@Marzen216, that's a clear and concise explanation of the inherent woke ideology and racism embedded in Lanterns. Obviously if systemic racism makes parents afraid and produces psychotic behaviour, then the moral should be to rise above it and not allow racism to dictate ones life in any way, from your thoughts, feelings, emotions, or actions, you know, like a HERO! Lanterns says the opposite, allow the perceived systemic racism to dictate everything in your life and let it control you and turn you into a psychopath, then call it brave and blame the system. Absolutely crazy. @Inkblot, as I said in my spoiler, I also didn't pull the racism out of the show until I read about it afterwards, as I just simply thought the dad was afraid of a green orb and both the parents were mentally unstable anxiety ridden psychopaths that weren't making any sense, for no good reason. They weren't explicit about the systemic racism being the underpinning for their behaviour nor were they clear about what opportunity in life would be missed for John, when they were already so well off. Their misunderstanding of the ring is really silly and senseless, thinking that they needed to endanger John to "train" him to become fearless when he was already fearless, makes no sense, as John is already enough.

I have heard this already lost count in how many USA shows. Let's assume it's true. So, all black people in USA work twice as hard. They should be twice as good, right? Right? Or at least 1.1 or let's say 1.3 times better? Why they don't dominate lazy, privileged white people? Why I on the other side of the ocean of this perpetual injustice don't read in news about the fruits of working 2x as hard, but read (and not in Fox News) that their top 10 most known representative was killed by another black guy, then bunch of other black guys refused to cooperate with the police (and even to give statements in trial 30 years later) etc. What I'm missing?

Wow, I never thought of that. But before I go anywhere with this, I think as you put it, The black man is disadvantaged, not because of skin color, but because the white man has for centuries worked very hard to make it so. Shit, I even remember a bank loan scam that kept black people from getting mortgages, in the 70's and 80's. They had to use white straw buyers, just to get a house. How would you feel, if you were black? They were herded into black ghettos of poor people called Welfare Housing projects. The motto then was, keep em dumb and broke. Crime exploded in those areas. Even broke, dumb white people resort to crime. When you have that kind of crap against you from the day you are born, your chances of success are extremely limited. But to stay on topic, as paisley1 so eloquently put it, The wink wink "WOKE" agenda did not even occur to me until some idiot pointed it out, and even then I still don't see it. To me all HUMANS are equal. Until some insert colour jackass make it not so. I have low hopes of this post surviving for any length of time. Thank you paisley1 for restoring my faith. I thought it was just my dumb white ass that didnt get it.

Re: Lanterns [Crime, DC Studios]
I just find it sad & disappointing that Hollyweird will choose to adapt a very popular IP, and then refuse to honor the canon, bastardize the main characters, ruin "the hero's journey" & then attack the fan base for not being on board with their warped version of the product. Why work on an IP where you despise it's orig message and then alter it to align with your ideological view of the world? I don't think this mindset will be permanent, but sadly, it will probably outlast me. RIP: Rings of Power Lanterns Snow White The Wheel of Time The Witcher (aka Where's Ciri?) Ouch, I still watch Rings of Power, Lanterns, Love The Wheel Of Time. Stopped watching Ghost busters when they made them all women, you got me there. She hulk, But in fairness Harrison Ford plays the Red Hulk (President Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross) in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, debuting in the 2025 film Captain America: Brave New World. If you gonna harp on Star Wars you have to mention The Acolyte, the other, ah crap, and the Mandalorian And Grogu, they just ruined it for me. Star Trek Discovery and thank you for making me remember section 31, this will add more sessions with my shrink, thanks . I don't blame it on being woke, I mean who here among us horny men has not wanted to try a sexy she hulk? Who could crush your skull into pulp with a twitch of her thighs. I think they just lost their minds taking a well written working formula, throwing it in the trash and saying. Hey lets try this. And now that they are aware of this error I expect them to fix it.

I'm guessing you're saying this is racist because it portrays racism towards black people, which is actually common in the US. I've only seen racist people take this response, as they absolutely HATE it when white people are shown being racist in any medium. Pretty telling you'd call Lidelof's Watchmen racist as well... very telling.

Re: Lanterns [Crime, DC Studios]
One more thing I think y'all are forgetting is that those childhood scenes take place in the 80s and early 90s. Segregation in the US only officially ended in the 60s, and then there was all the already mentioned stuff in the 70s and 80s. That means the parents would have lived through those times. The father's a guy who, when woken up by strange lights in the middle of the night, may well still be reasonably expecting a lynching. What they are right about is that he has a bit of a disadvantage in that test against one who has never had to think about that. Acknowledging that is not a bad thing. But, unlike apparently the actors, I also did not get the impression that this was played as a justification for their behaviour. To actively endanger a kid and keeping him from ever experiencing a normal childhood on the off chance of getting him into a particular job in the future is psychotic. That, I think, they managed to show. Good people with good intentions letting obsession drive them into really bad methods. Did we actually hear whether only two candidates were tested? Because that guy in particular probably also only passed that test because he was already a complete jackass who is repeatedly shown to be incapable of anticipating the consequences of his actions. May be the third white guy they tried. No privilege needed, just a mental disability.

Agreed. How you view your disadvantage is what's important, to either succumb to systemic racism and be a fearful victim, or rise above it and become a fearless victor. Which of the two is the attitude of a hero? The show also didn't portray the struggle, the disenfranchisement, the victimization, as the Stewart's live a nice healthy upper middle class life, so to the viewer, the marginalization and fear was all perceived and in their head, and didn't land. The entire concept of a question and a test is a total retcon fabrication by a black female writer Vanessa Baden Kelly who changed the lore, as the green lantern rings' AI chooses without question, who the Green Lantern will be. They changed the lore, to question fear, to write a story about systemic racism, instead of heroism and actual virtue.

All great points. That is why I don't judge on that scale, until I am told I was watching WoKE media. It messes with ya. Thats why I remember my father telling me that he judges people not by their past, but by their actions. We need more dads teaching this stuff. We need schools that also teach Life Lessons, managing a checking account, cooking, etc. With no real parenting, and the no kid left behind in schools, we are pumping out grade 12 students who cannot read or do simple math. And we wonder why society has gone to crap. Sorry, wandered a bit there. Dammit paisley1, you always post when I post, and then I have to go in and add some stuff for you, cause I do not want 2 messages in a row. I hate u. j/k @paisley1 I was wondering if anyone picked up on that. WTF happened to the ring choosing? And the ring never made a mistake. But I think one of the Guardians tried to explain why, and the answer did not sit well with me, Good catch paisley1.

Re: Lanterns [Crime, DC Studios]
@Inkblot, lolz, it's all good man, the basic lore is that the ring chooses who will be the next Green Lantern using it's own built in AI system and knows exactly who is fearless, has exceptional willpower, and can design the best with the ring. There was a circumstance where Hal created a test of moral character to see if John was worthy of being the Green Lantern before giving him the ring in the comics, but the rings' AI had already chosen John, there was no test by the ring itself. ▼Spoiler In John Stewart’s debut appearance—Green Lantern #87 (1971)—the Guardians of the Universe select John to replace an injured Guy Gardner as Earth's backup Green Lantern. When Hal Jordan is assigned to train him, he is skeptical of John’s anti-authority attitude and decides to put his character to the test.

So its a license to be a bully and dick. Fun fun. I have a hard time with The guy playing Hal as an ass. I was introduced to him in https://next-episode.net/early-edition And he was such a nice dude.

So its a license to be a bully and dick. Fun fun.
It's terrible. Kyle Chandler is forever Coach Taylor from Friday Night Lights to me, and ya, even in the beginning of FNL I said, isn't that the guy from Early Edition??
Not enough actors working I guess. Or certain actors get typecast in your head. Not his fault, he was good. Maybe too good .

Re: Lanterns [Crime, DC Studios]
104 - The Weenie A combination of bad writing, race baiting, and lore breaking retcons, gave me whiplash, like, everything about this makes no sense. ▼Spoiler You do not earn the ring. It chooses you. The Green Lantern Corps would not grant the ring to a civilian from an active Green Lantern by reciting the oath when they put it on. Also not a violation to visit Sinestro in prison. John didn't hate Hal, and Hal didn't hate John. Why perpetuate racial tension where there isn't any? The only way out of this mess is if Lianna (Laura Linney) is the Manhunter, messing with the Green Lantern Corps for years, hiding in plain sight, now using the systemic racism the Stewarts are afraid of as a way of getting John to take the ring from Hal, it would explain everything that doesn't add up, (Hal's gut), even the bonkers question, "Are you afraid?" from the previous episode, and all the alien activity that seems protected. Or is she being controlled by Sinestro? Who knows who cares. meh. During butchering, they didn't drain the blood, and lasers would just damage and burn the meat. Dumb aliens? More likely dumb writers.
