Topic: Ms. Marvel

Series based on the Marvel Comics character, Kamala Khan. Marvel goes to Bollywood?

will this turn out to be Marvel's version of Stargirl? The first eps of both very similar.

Spoiler

Both missfits discover the staff/gaunlet and power return home to find their parent waiting to scold them and rebut any further antics.

Stargirl aka Courtney Whitmore created 1999
Kamala Khan 2013.

Could have done with 2 eps to kick this show off, but then there are only 6 in the season.  That is not a lot of screen time? Does not seem to show much  confidence in the show?  The show comes across better than that other teen scifi show Naomi which surprizingly got 13

Re: Ms. Marvel

I also could've done with 2 Eps to start here but, like with Moon Knight, it seems Disney+ wants to keep the content release AI set to 1999 or something... which isn't terrible, who doesn't love some Watercooler Talk TV. In the meantime it seemed intermateable to wait a week between Eps but it was a good time talking about what was or might be happening...

That being as it is, as a Ms. Marvel (Kamala Khan) reader, from way back, I was a little... maybe not disappointed but concerned as to what interpretation the Powers That Be brought to the MCU. As a fan of the small screen, I felt it was a predicable yet serviceable beginning.

I've my fingers crossed that this ends up more of a Cloak & Dagger reimagining rather than a Runaways hmm

Re: Ms. Marvel

Predictable is a good word. I was just bored by it and really don't care for the powers. She's different enough from Mr. Fantastic in the comics and her powers in the comics go with the whole awkward vibe better. Hopefully this will pick up some steam or at least be a little less paint by numbers.

Also I can't believe you liked C&D better than Runaways, Fizza big_smile

Yes I never finished C&D  dreary. Runaways only went wrong in the end.

I dont think the present show will last long enough to attract much comment. too much time was spent faffing around in eps 1.  I understand she is to appear with the real adult Capt Marvel of the films later.

This thread needs adding to the Ms Marvel next-eps entry?

Part of it could be because, as a reader of both C&D and Runaways, I just saw the adaption of the clunky 80's origin for C&D, to the small screen to be prescient and even a little subversive. Whereas the very subversive 00's origin for The Runaways was, for me, squandered...that series became what we agreed this first Ep of Ms Marvel seemed to be, predictable. But whatever the reasons may be I loved Tandy & Ty!

Also, I agree with you on "her powers in the comics go with the whole awkward vibe better." I also liked her family dynamic in the comics much better. That seemed more grounded, this seemed pretty much like every other portrayal of a Middle Eastern family out there.

Not to say that anything was out right uncomfortable but it didn't feel very textured for, or maybe original to, (at least to me) the Kamala Khan I was hoping to see. Still, as merc was saying it is early days.

Agreed, that's why the first two Eps may've helped us get a better feel for what is going on... Although had they dropped the first two Moon Knight's at once it wouldn't have helped me tongue

Re: Ms. Marvel

Spoiler

Yeah I feel like the bracelet having power kills the whole story of her pregnant grandmother fleeing Bombay during the partition, which is a nice bit in the comics.

Re: Ms. Marvel

Not familiar with the comic and found the show more entertaining than expected. Hope it holds up.

Re: Ms. Marvel

I think they have spent too much time on the opening and closing credit stuff? a waste of money that should have been spend on the show proper

YES, 100000%!!!!  But I have a feeling they're not going to get there in the MCU anyways hmm

1x1 felt like it was focused too much on a teen audience for me to really enjoy it.

Spoiler

And what happened at AvengerCon was so unbelievable... Disappointing!

Re: Ms. Marvel

Not only focused on a teen audience, but focused on a teen audience in that particular way that only dorky middle-aged people do it ;P

Re: Ms. Marvel

I didn't like it at all, as has already been said the target audience is teens, and being of a senior age didn't fall into my age bracket.

I do like MU quite a bit, but it seems as if now Disney have got their hands on it they are throwing out shows just to get people to sign up to the channel...at least that's my opinion.

14

Re: Ms. Marvel

Yeah, way too much of a kid's show for me.

15

Re: Ms. Marvel

Also notable: So far Disney+ usually released only one either MCU or Star Wars show at a time, then the next shortly after. But this one they are releasing concurrently with and even on the same day as Obi-Wan Kenobi.

That's nice to hear. Whether I am enjoying this interpretation or not, I am a Ms Marvel fan so I do hope to hear more about this tween series from those not already a supporter of Kamala cool

Re: Ms. Marvel

This felt like it was made for 13 year old female Pakistanis to me.  Just a TV show trying far too hard to appeal to that dynamic.  Far too cliched and full of stereotypes.

Stargirl it is not.  Good it was not.  I've suddenly turned into Yoda.

2020.  Meh.

That.

I've watched it and will watch another 1-2 episodes because I like the universe all in all, but unless it can grow out of the teen atmosphere, I will just let it go.

Not sure how relevant it might be in the future films/universe...

it is only 6 eps long so hardly a job to stay to the end?

From the pictures I saw, something like an AvengerCon would never happen in such a small location. But that's not the issue:

Spoiler

Event organizers would never use a metal head this heavy for an Ant-Man convention figure: after falling from only a relatively minor height, it kept rolling and rolling and rolling. And the Thor's hammer pendulum it triggered would never be this heavy, and if it were, it would have killed or at least severely injured the girl it hit at full swing.

It is when you value your time. I'll check out 1x2 but don't have high hopes.

Re: Ms. Marvel

So 1x02 remains a dull teenage love story in the making. I'm thinking NAH.

hmm I have yet to watch eps 2. maybe they should have got the original comic book writer to do the job as with Stargirl & Geof Johns? Is he/she still alive? if so it must make them angry to see their creation given a bum deal

Re: Ms. Marvel

Kamala was a collaborative creation but her main writer works for DC these days.
Ep 2 was more interesting.

enjoyed it also toward the end but i hope her super powers  go beyond stepping stones. But didnt her mother see her in her Marvel outfit in eps 1 when she came back from Agengerbash, so how could she not know who Nitelight? is?
