Re: Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (May 05, 2022)

1x05 was fine except for the body swap.  I am sure almost every TV show has done a body swap episode now.  They are not funny and haven't been since the Original Freaky Friday film in 1976.

Please stop doing body swaps.

DRM "manages access" in the same way that Prison "manages freedom".

dont agree just think it was not done well. would have been funnier had it been Spock and the randy blond nurse bombshell. missed opportunity. The two vulcans were too similar for it to be funny, was rather lame

The dream twist on Amok Time from TOS was cool, as long as they keep nodding towards TOS I'll be happy. Really love the uniforms too! Way better IMHO than Disco, and super glad they didn't take any uniform design queues from Enterprise.

105, so good, but why hasn't anyone mentioned.....

Spoiler

Enterprise BINGO!  I so want to play that!  Are Star Trek amusement parks at Universal?  Anyway,  it's hard to tell with the font they use, but check if I got the rules right:

Enterprise Bingo

Complete 10 items from the list below.  Don't get caught!

1. Use transporter to reflavor gum
2. Phaser stun duel
3. Turbolift two floor shout challenge
4. Set the universal translator to Andorian
5. Gravity boot hang challenge
6. Medical tricorder challenge vulcan marsupial
7. Food replicator challenge durian fruit (So long as you don't have to eat it.  Durian is disgusting!)
8. Sneak a tribble into the transporter buffer.
9. Sit in the captains chair.
10. EV Suit Challenge: Unsanctioned space walk.
11. Sign the scorch

Let me know.

Re: Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (May 05, 2022)

I loved the "down time" schtick in the latest Ep.

In fact, I feel as though, if this and the last few Eps are an accurate representation of the type of series Strange New Worlds is going to be... well then, I guess I'm in.

Also doesn't hurt that one of my favorite classic Trek secondary (and sometimes just sort of background) character, Doctor Jabilo M'Benga, is on the series... I honestly wasn't expecting it (as I don't do 'news' or 'trailers') and granted his new edgy background story isn't anything special... still the nostalgia feels for that character and No. 1 are enhancing my enjoyment of this adventure sci-fi cool

P.S. I just want to say that while at first I was not sure about the body swap trope in Ep 4, in the end it was much less redic than that Voyager Ep where the Doctor and Se7en body swapped... in some ways, even, much less annoying tongue

Re: Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (May 05, 2022)

Certainly a step in the right direction, let's hope they keep this us up.

But whenever I watch anything "new Star Trek", I can't help wondering what "The Orville" team could do with the same actors, sets and budgets they have.

2020.  Meh.

Me too... and to be honest it took me awhile to downshift to this, a more conventional take on modern sci-fi, after having watched a series like The Orville where they do such an fantastic job subverting SF tropes in ways that might even impress the Grand Masters (which, incidentally, is not something I ever thought I would write).

Meanwhile Strange New Worlds... while not, by any means, bad does almost feel as though all the Powers That Be did was recruit writers from the Stargate franchise, since all SNW seems to be doing (so far) is just telling decently fun action sci-fi.

That being as it is, none of the writes for SNW seem to have been doing any of the SF series I've found compelling in recent years... Save for maybe Akela Cooper, who worked on The 100 (which, to be fair, was more a space opera than a straight-up science fiction series).

So yeah, I think, were they given the chance, The Orville writers would've made more the series I wanted to see but this isn't bad either... I loved me some Stargate: Atlantis cool

Re: Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (May 05, 2022)

Watched the first 3 eps and so far i really enjoy it, even the endcredits music is a great new rendition of the orginal music.

So far i enjoy this the most of the recent Star Trek attempts with
Discovery which had some good episodes but was mostly meh/okish and
Picard which was mostly too slow paced/boring.

And the Orville is also great even tho in the second season there were also some better and some worse episodes i dident like but havent started season 3 yet.

So far so good.

good punch line to eps 6.
Has any one noticed that Pike's hair sticks up unnaturally and a bit funny like he has had a blow dry? well it is a rather exaggerated quiff?

Yes, I almost get quiff-envy. wink But then I'd need a new car to fit in with that much volume on top. lol

Have you noticed that many sci-fi shows use extravagant hair styles? I even mentioned them in the Expanse thread - I think it's a fun way to remind the viewer again and again that the show plays in the future, not the well-known present.

First show in a long time having goose bumps every minute watching it. I consider TNG, DS9 and later seasons of Voyager my favorites, but Strange New Worlds could end up even better.

No I´m not Tom Hanks - duh!!

It reminds me so much of the original star trek. Cheesy lines/plots and love interests for the captain. Loving it.....

Marry/F*ck/Kill Captains

Marry - Pike - cause you know his time is short and the payday is large
F*ck - Pike - cause of the hair and the wittiness
Kill - Pike - cause I want to see the paradox unfold
