Would love to read an explanation for why you enjoyed this.

These shows are just shows. I don't put any money in them and use them as an escape from reality. I'm not a hardcore fan of any ip. It was funny, that's it.

Some people, not naming any names, need to get the stick of their ass and just enjoy life.

Shoot, I was so hoping for a well thought out dissertation on how puppets are on brand for what it means to be a show about Strange New Worlds, and that dreams about puppets can help the Vulcan mind reconnect with their inner child and get out of the logical mind to reinterpret their world from a fresh perspective, which is what 4x5 was about, but no, you just think it's funny and then took a shot at everyone else who thought it wasn't funny "needs to get the stick of their ass and just enjoy life."  Not really sure what that means.  I think people are allowed to dislike episodes when their standard isn't being met, as much as they're allowed to enjoy episodes that meet that standard, so no judgment for enjoying the humour, I just thought they didn't land the premise, was too stupid to be funny, makes a mockery of Star Trek, and depreciates the value of the IP.

I'm a simple guy, I don't think things that complicated. I don't give a damn if one thinks the IP's value goes down in their mind. Everyone is allowed to have an opinnion. My opinnion is that if these things make people angry, they need to re-evaluate things in their life.

That's why I don't usually comment and if a see a wall of text with no punctuation or coherence, I skip it.

The point of this whole thing is that viewers who complain have not paid anything for the production of the shows. Paying for streaming does not count.

@Daemonius - Thank you for your perspective.  Being angry about TV shows is normal and does not require re-evaluation, I personally don't feel any anger about this episode, it was just bad. How do you know my paragraph above has no punctuation and is not coherent if you skipped it?  If the only people who can complain about a show on a discussion forum are people who paid for the production, wouldn't that be entitled and exclusive to executive producers, undermine their own work, and be a conflict of interest?

TV show discussion forums involve people sharing opinions, complaining, venting, analyzing, praising, hating, debating, questioning, and exchanging ideas with ALL the feelings they may have, including angry ones, all under the assumption they have no financial interest into the production of the shows they discuss as that would be a compromised untrustworthy opinion and constitute a conflict of interest.

What season are you on?  How good is it after 20 years and what kind of rating would you give it on the merc scale?  I was obsessed with BSG 2004 when it first came out.  Exodus Part 2 FTW!  Bear McCreary - All Along The Watchtower So good. I have the Bluray boxset and Apple Digital.

Picard season 3 was the best Trek since Enterprise.  Probably the greatest fan service of all time!
Discovery was exxtreme woke with a lot of crying, and needs to be ret-conned out of the timeline by a deus ex machina or Q...along with the rest of Kurtzman Trek.

Yeah - Paying for the content via streaming does count.  That's how the production gets paid for.  To follow the previous analogy you'd basically be saying

because you only pay for medical INSURANCE and not actually paying for the construction and maintenance of the hospital, then it doesn't count and you don't have a position to complain about how terrible the medical care you received was: You didn't pay the doctor's tuition after all.

Paying your monthly rent for the show is what drives production of more shows in that IP or genre.  Just like paying your monthly apartment rent means you have the right to complain about bugs, mold and failed air con even though you didn't pay for the construction of the building.

So yeah, if you're paying $19.99/mo so you can watch the Star Trek i.p. - and you're served this "Muppets in Space" drivel instead of a proper Star Trek show, it's basically bait-n-switch on the product you've paid for.  Like going to Subway for a chicken sub sandwich and finding out its actually tofu (which is why they got sued for doing it to customers)

Hey... Maybe that's what Paramount needs: A false advertising/bait-n-switch class action lawsuit by a few hundred thousand subscribers all wanting 2 months of their subscription fees returned because they only have the subscription because of the Trek franchise and they were dooped with this fake show.  Of course they'll win, but it becomes a case of pennies to dollars because for every penny spent on the law suit they have to spend a dollar defending/disproving it.  Then they loose another dollar for of those pennies, in bad PR, lost subscriptions and erosion of their paying fan base.

Of course it does, it's the same as your healthcare, you pay per subscription either directly or indirectly there as well.

well  BG stands up pretty well , even the last season that many didnot like for its supernatural tones, except  for one BIG  thing the woke swearing "Frack off" " Frack!" we all know what it really is! Would have been great had they had ther courage to say what they mean. Ah Enterprise? you must be one of 2 to like that. The only BSG that IMHO does not hold up is the 1980 season, with the exception of the last episode.

Exactly.  Came to say basically the same thing.  Pretty much the first solidly Star Trek episode in the last...15 or so.

Episode 1 this season was a 5 (still well above their average)
Episode 2 was dark a.f. but still well done.  Give it a 6 or 7.
This one... Grading on the scale of Strange New Worlds... Gets a 8.5 from me. (again, that the SNW scale of only grading against their own episodes)

After last weeks episode I didn't have high hopes for this one and was ready to be disappointed. Thankfully that wasn't the case the best episode of the series so far, back to proper star trek. It's a shame I can't really relate to any of the characters as they are so far removed from the actors in the original series (maybe it is the poor writers we have now rather than poor actors) but lets hope the few remaining episodes are as good as this one.

why would you want actors today pretending to be the exact same characters from a show over 50 years ago?

would you like the same special effects?
the exact same stories?
zero character development?

then i am sure you can get AI to re do every show as the star trek cartoon from the 70's, voices, writing style and all.

It was OK.
Yeah, storywise it was the most Star Trek episode we had this season, but that's about it.

The writing was still not much better than in the other episodes.
The directing was horrible - what's up with the too-close close-ups and the split-screen?

Even with that, everything that happened on the ship felt so disconnected from each other - you could almost argue that they weren't even on the same ship.

▼Spoiler

First of all, with all the set-up and their talk about "A shift" and that they are almost done with their shift, I almost thought this episode would be about B shift. Which honestly would've been cool. Introduce some new characters at the beginning of the season (like vulcan girl) and have them rise to the occasion for a episode while the main crew is stuck in their quarters.

Scotty saying the elevator doesn't work because of his accent...on an space ship with aliens and a universal translator...but no, scottish is too much for it to handle lol

Why wasn't it Spok who goes and restores the gravity control in the lounge? Aren't Vulcan's more suited for higher gravity?

Why did no one come to med-bay? I mean before Scotty turned off live support... did everyone except the actual doctor only get superficial injuries???
Where are all the extras who usually suddenly work in med-bay when something like this happens?...oh yeah at the end of the episode they show up.

Everyone on the bridge being perfectly fine when we see them again. No chaos, no sparks flying, nothing...just business as usual..

Before Scotty turned of live-support, why did all of the people in the lounge just stay around like idiots? As if they were all civilians...

Getting out of the slipstream...Super easy, barely an inconvenience!

When Scotty returned to the transporter room and those three extras came in...the look on their faces lol

What got me was:

  • Ok.  Life-support turned off in the hallways.  Where's all this mist coming from?

  • That's a large volume of air and nobody is in the halls.  It remains a large volume of breathable air.  Turning off life support doesn't suddenly turn the halls into chambers of chorine gas or whatever.

  • Do you know how hard it is to bleed off heat in space?  Its a near-vacuum with no gas/matter to absorb heat.  Its a problem for satellites and the big space telescopes etc.  The idea that an internal room like sickbay would drop even 2° in the 45 min countdown is silly - let alone -190° to where Chapel's finger snaps off like its in liquid nitrogen.

  • But at -150° or whatever she's surviving on a some loosely draped mylar emergency blankets?  Didn't even take some medical tape and make it all into a snowsuit, wrapped multiple times around, just dangly like your aunty wearing a shawl

  • And she hasn't gone blind from her exposed eyes. Not even safety goggles to retain some heat. I remember winters in Illinois the new reminding people that at -40°f any exposed skin is dead in 30 minutes and that includes your eyes (because people for that). In this impossible arctic sick-bay they'd both have been dead 100 degrees ago.

  • But at the same time as all the corridors are deadly, the Jefferies tube off the corridor is fine, air, warm. Scottie is fine in there.

  • Nobody has a phaser? No emergency phasers in wall lockers for the big rooms like the bar and sick-bay?  We used to see crewmen using phasers to heat rocks then huddle around them to stay warm. Nobody can slag a table so the molten metal gives some heat for half an hour?

  • When did transporters start changing your position?  In TNG they had to squat if beaming into small spaces.  TOS too.  But in SNW Scottie leaves the pad standing and materialized in position on a ladder.  Then leaves the ladder posture to again be upright on the pad.

Still, this episode proved that COULD write acceptable Star Trek if they wanted to.  Re-enforcing all the other bad episode are a CHOICE they've made.

That being said, yes, "science fiction writer" used to be a proper job, and it sure would be nice to have some of those on the writing team. What I actually blame it on is that the current crop of writers grew up with Back to the Future, which really lowered the bar on what an "explanation" can be. Regardless, the episode was very much enjoyable.

I don't think greater physical strength is the deciding factor here.

The Physical Comparison: Vulcan vs. Illyrian
Vulcan Physiology: Vulcans naturally evolve on a high-gravity planet (Vulcan has roughly 1.4x Earth's gravity) with a much denser atmosphere. Their muscle fibers are far denser than a human's, and their hearts pump blood at a significantly higher pressure to withstand immense gravitational loads.

Illyrian Augmentations: Una's genetic modifications grant her superhuman strength and durability, but her baseline bone and muscle structure are still built around standard Earth-normal environments. This is tragically proven when her leg audibly snaps under the extreme pressure of the localized slipstream gravity

Ha ha ha, in universe we are talking about 1-2 years between where we are in SNW now (mid penultimate season) and the start of TOS. How many people fundamentally change in that short a timeframe..or do you think there is a 50 year gap between events in SNW and TOS, that is what your argument implies.

I just watched 406, (Off-Hour), and with the time counting down it felt like a bad episode of 24.  I wanted Kiefer Sutherland to say Events Occur In Real Time., thus the split screen we saw in this episode.  lolz.  Kinda cringe if you think about Trek trying to knock off 24.  This episode wanted to be a sciency race against time, but in the end the science just felt like another deus ex machina, and key moments were missed:

▼Spoiler

The main problem of going into a slipstream is where you end up after Borg-Air flight "oh my god we're all gonna die", takes you half way across the quadrant and you're 10 years away from home, so the first thing Pike needed to ask navigation when they got out was, "Where the hell are we!?"  (Which would've been a great segue into a 3 part story if they were in the middle of nowhere.)  As Pike never even bothered to ask the question, it made it seem like they didn't go far in the slipstream, easily found a heading, returned to warp, and everything was fine, which downplayed and deflated the danger of the slipstream, like it didn't do anything to effect their place in space.  So that critical moment was missed.

https://trekcentral.net/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/SNW_406_JT_0416_0270_RT.jpg

The second missing moment was between nurse Chapel and Dr. Boyce, as he gave her a cold order to basically let M'Benga die but Chapel didn't listen to him which forced her to come up with researching slipstream neutrinos, which sparked Scotty's intuition, which saved both the ship and M'Benga.  A call back between Chapel and Dr. Boyce at the end would've given some resolve for her disobedience.  Something like Chapel smiling at Boyce while he ignores her, would resolve that story.  A relational moment was missed.

https://m.media-amazon.com/images/M/MV5BMDU4ZDA2YTktYjc0YS00M2MwLWE3Y2ItNzY0YjM0NmY4MDY5XkEyXkFqcGc@._V1_FMjpg_UX2160_.jpg

Didn't Una shatter her tibia and Spock suffer from radiation poisoning?  Was it not worth showing them being treated along with Chapel and M'Benga in sick bay?  A health care moment was missed.

I rolled my eyes at how gravity crushed a grand piano but not people roll, that Scotty thought his Scottish accent was lost on the universal translator roll, and that the B crew weren't shown taking over the ship in the end.  The inciting incident was that everyone was tired prepping for B crew, particularly Scotty who's mistake led to the ship falling into the slipstream, so to bring the show full circle they needed a transitional moment of B Crew taking over the ship, and A Crew, especially Scotty, getting some rest.  The conclusion was missed.

Commander Pelia is 5000 years old and taught at Starfleet for years and never learned particle physics?  Ok, fine, she over heard everything there was to know about particle physics but never bothered "studying it", lolz, that I'll accept.  Pelia had time to trace back the genomic history of the lemon in the middle of a disaster, but they didn't have time to resolve key plot points, sigh.

https://blog.trekcore.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/snw406-photo-11.jpg

Had they capped off key moments that brought the story around full circle, as per my spoiler, this episode could've landed but it didn't, it just ended up unresolved and underwhelming, and kinda cringe considering they knocked off 24.  You know how they should knock off 24, actually making 24 episodes per season like 24.

    7. Days of our Lives

Re: Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

@SgtSaint - Copy, plagiarize, and re-purpose, these writers have no understanding of Star Trek or fresh ideas.

▼Spoiler

1. Valles Marineris - 401 was WAY better than 65, that movie sucked, as 401 dealt with causation like the movie Predestination crossed with Jurassic Park, it was very much on brand for Star Trek and a great episode, but not new.

2. The Griffin Incident - Yep, 402 was Event Horizon, only more pointless.

3. Human Best Friend - Hangover/Dude, where's my shuttle - "Have you found the continuum transfunctioner?", hilarious that Dude, where's my car? had more science fiction in it than Star Trek. It's normal for the crew to take shore leave, like to Betazed, they've just never made an episode about it before.

4. A Case of Chiaroscuro - Maltese Falcon, sure or any bad film noir about an occupation, resistance, and a doppelganger.  Blade Runner?

5. Level-Five Transporter Accident - Muppets from Space, or Pigs in Space. Gong!

Why is Gonzo on the roof?
His breakfast cereal told him to go up there.
Talk about Whole Grain & Nuts!

6.Off-Hour - 24 (The series) - If people didn't know this was 24, they should go back and re-watch 24!

7. Like Chronitons Through the Hourglass - Days of our Lives is perfect casting for Anson Mount.

8. Orders of Magnitude - Starfleet commandeers the Enterprise to catch aliens, you mean like Star Trek: The Motion Picture??

9. Once La'An a Time - That's a fairy tale episode, ugh.

10. Yesterday's Enterprise - Meeting future Enterprise via a temporal anomaly / causation problem is a bit redundant at this point, is it not?

They're setting the stage for Pike dying and this new Kirk taking over, and I do not like him, the show will be worse with him in it, Anson Mount is way better.
