one reason I notice his hair. I used to have an old CRT tv when I was poor that had the timing or some thing wrong and it stretched the top of the screen so everything was like his hair even if it wasnt

Oh heck if eps 2 ("Event Horizon" knock off) was bad to you… Just wait for eps 3 ("The Hangover" knock off). You'll be longing to rewatch #2 just to burn it out of memory.

You're funny... We still have a "Game of Thrones" fantasy episode... and a 'transport accident' makes everyone into puppets episode. On this scale I think they're showing them in order of quality... with each episode DROPPING in value 1 was nearly an actually Trek episode 2 was sci-fi horror 3 was someone's acid trip and getting worse from there

Either way, I would prefer bad episodes with the possibility of further good ones, over nothing at all. So I am gratefully disappointed that we have something. Dont shit in your own back yard, and be happy for what you have.

I accept that's a fair position for some. If you feel that way, then great. i respect your position. But I don't share that position. It sounds too much like what the producers keep shoveling on the fans:

Willingly accepting trash just gets more trash made. People accepted Discovery and that lead in a straight line to Starfleet: Academy. People accepted the 3rd season of SNW including the musical shyte, and that lead to this forth season of lower and lower quality. And we all saw what that same philosophy did to the Star Wars franchise as well as all of the Marvel universe. And now what James Gunn is doing to the DC universe. Accept trash and they will lower the bar further until we stop accepting. I'd rather not accept trash - demand better - and if they don't deliver then I have something like 700 episodes of good Trek to rewatch. For example: I'm working through the remastered TOS and its amazing how much just updating the special effects does. But its been long enough since watching it that its basically all new again. Just rewatching all the good Treks would be hundreds of hours of nearly-new shows again at this point.
TOS - 80 TNG - 176 DS9 - 172 VOY - 168 ENT - 98 Total - 694 hours
At even a few episodes a week that's years of QUALITY Trek without having to settle for whatever slop they throw at us. Intertwine other good shows like Babylon 5, Farscape, Eureka, {...} and one quickly finds that there's very little being produced today that compares, which is why its harder and harder to find those good shows being broadcast: They don't want the audience comparing. Thank goodness for having it all on hard media and personal server.

You are wrong about the hours. from Tos to Enterprise commercials have increasingly gotten bigger or longer. Tos 80 hours - 10 minutes per ep for commercials = 72 TNG 176 hours we are up to 13-15 per hour = 149.6 hours See a pattern here? Also, I grew up when TOS aired I have seen each episode almost 40+ times. I can recite the lines for you now for christ sake, just by getting 20 seconds after the intro. Same with the rest. I have a box which has 24/7 stations that only play the above. And I have seen Farscape 6 or 7 times. Babylon 5 about 13-15 times etc etc. Tired of the old shit. So when something new comes out, I am the fly, like a fly on a warm and steamy pile of poop. I personally doubt that my not liking something would effect its airing. I liked a lot of stuff like Firefly and liking it did not keep it on the air. So forgive me if occasionally I take a shovel of horse crap over nothing. Cause your opinion or mine, ain't gonna do shit about some show that we like or dislike. You will do one or the other or end up watching nothing.

with story lines like these, i hope AI is given a chance to write an episode. it could not be any more generic and unoriginal then what we have gotten. really that writer strike that demanded so much has paid us back with crap

I agree with you as well. Just because I put up with crap means I am holding out for better episodes. There is always hope, but as my dad used to say, put hope in one hand and crap in the other, see which fills up first. You can tell he had lost all hope. Who knows, maybe the Muppet episode will be good.

If they keep churning out and producing crap, they will never actually be forced to produce quality. They will keep paying the talentless hacks ruining the franchise. I'm currently rewatching the early seasons of Voyager, you know, the ones that people generally say are the weakest across all the 90's Trek and they are SO much better than anything Kurtzman vomited out. I guess I'm lucky that I haven't rewatched them so many times that I know them all, same with DS9.

True enough. I should have said 'episodes' not 'hours'. Also, I grew up when TOS aired I have seen each episode almost 40+ times. Same with the rest. I have a box which has 24/7 stations that only play the above. And I have seen Farscape 6 or 7 times. Babylon 5 about 13-15 times etc etc.
Ok. But then you are almost arguing my side for me - just 15-20 rewatches ahead of me. I mean you're making the point that someone would rather rewatch the good shows 7-40 times each. That's a heck of a statement but proves my point: Nobody is rewatching Discovery more than once or twice without vomiting violently. And yeah - I've rewatched most of the Treks, and Firefly, and Farscape, and the Expense a lot. Like you I basically burned myself out on the 90's shows and just stopped. But its been so long since I've rewatched them, its almost knew again. (Brain damage from a couple motorcycle accidents actually helps me in that respect-haha) with story lines like these, i hope AI is given a chance to write an episode.
Pretty sure that's what we're already watching and they won't admit it. This stuff is so... cringe... feels so much like a generative script (or at least outline) produced by a prompt, complete with the 10 canon errors per episode. Someone mentioned having hope for future episodes. And I do. That's why I still watch the current shows once. I'm still watching SNW as they air out of hope and had some hopeful words to say after s04e01 and even s04e02. But I honestly doubt they'll ever get rewatched. Compare that to us all saying we rewatch the legacy shows a dozen times or more. You will do one or the other or end up watching nothing.
Yep.
I'm okay with those choices: I'd rather do the most mundane thing than re-watch trash.

I loved DS9, it was darker and showed consequences to actions. Even though that show was anchored on a space station, it had enough action to keep you coming back. I have re-watched that several times as well. DS9 kinda reminded me of Caprica, but not everyone who was into BSG took to it. Stargate Universe was another show that was darker then its predecessor, and unfortunately ended at season 2 on a cliffhanger. @SgtSaint for me a legacy show is the year 2000 or below. Star Trek Strange New Worlds is not a legacy show. IMHO.

SNW is not legacy. Agreed. I tend to refer to legacy as pre-2009 Chris Pratt movie. Pre-Abrams. Pre-Kurtzman. Up to the first 10 movies but not the Kelvin and beyond. 2009 was the start of it all going down hill. I think we're both on the same sheet of music. I enjoyed Caprica but it got even more religous than the last couple season of BSG2005

RE: ST:SNW S04E03 "Human Best Friend" The sad reality of Hollywood monopolies is that only money matters. This is why SNW must appeal to the audience which loves Seth Rogan and Hot Tub Time Travel -- in order to obtain the funding to make a few intelligent episodes each season, which are ratings failures in the target markets of socal media addicted youth, who have the attention span of a Tik-Tok video.

Re: Star Trek: Strange New Worlds
https://bleedingfool.com/movies-tv-film … is-adrift/ All of this ties back to one issue. Alex Kurtzman. During his tenure, he kept framing Star Trek as a tool to talk about the present moment, saying the future is just a mirror for today. That sounds oh so thoughtful, but it misses the point entirely. Gene Roddenberry’s vision wasn’t about dragging modern problems into space. It was about showing a future where humanity had moved past them.

Oh my dog... If you want 10 mins of a funny read you should see the comments and discussions about the coming s04e04 episode (gangster knock-off done in black and white). So I'm guessing the TOS "A Piece of the Action" episode. https://www.reddit.com/r/trektalk/comme … s_episode/ Its everyone eviscerating the hacks making the show. Same comments as here about it being 5 gimmick shows out of 10 and how we need to get back to 24 episode seasons etc. Just kinda nice to see the broader fan base feeling the same way.

Nina_C wrote:RE: ST:SNW S04E03 "Human Best Friend" This is why SNW must appeal to the audience {...}
I'll stop ya there at "must appeal to the audience". - I don't think its about actually audience *appeal* and hasn't been for a long time. It isn't about some budget episodes in order to make some good ones. Once broadcast tv died and streaming took over the entire business model changed. They no longer really care about the appeal of the episode or shows any more. Because they no longer have the immediate ratings reports and advertisers pulling funding in real time if 3 consecutive episodes suck. It used to be a show had its advertising supporting it. Now its all a collective pool of dollars to a streamer for the entire month. A bad show can survive so long as it provided content minutes for the viewers to doom scroll on their TV where that wouldn't have happened in 1978-1995. Now streamers own the audience for a month because you've already paid your rent for the full month in advance. They just need to keep you from cancelling. That's it. All they have to do is provide the minimum amount required to keep you from cancelling. And the streamers have gotten their optimizations down pat. 10 weeks of SNW can survive a 19 month hiatus 10 weeks of snw - half way in start Dark Matter as the overlap show and people will renew their rent for another month Start "Mobland" and "Outlander blood of my blood" mid month so people have to renew to see it through to the end See the pattern here? It has very little to do with quality of episodes so much as **content minutes** getting dolled out on an overlapping basis. We all keep hoping for that next good thing to come along so even if SNW was a little disappointing it was minimum quality to keep us when played along side "Reacher" and "House of the Dragon" - none have to be *good*. Just good-enough collectively to keep people paying their rent to the streamers. And thus begins the race to the bottom - what's the minimum quality, longest hiatus, shortest season, largest gap between end of show A and start of show B - to keep paying month-to-month rent for their entertainment?

Re: Star Trek: Strange New Worlds
Tonally they are barely pulling off the comedy but I did chuckle a few times by how hammed up it was, lolz. The events of 4x3 are what you refer back to in a 30 second conversation during a real episode, like "Remember that time we took some shore leave on Cesnar and everything was awkward after ...blah...blah...blah... what was your idea of relaxation again? Bingo ....blah...blah...blah... and remember how Pike got a tattoo and how we overcame our fight with a bomb ...blah..blah..blah" Reframed this way, talking about it in the past, this episode would've really worked if they used the shore leave as backstory to help solve the problems of the diplomatic mission, as that's a little more consistent with Star Trek.

Episode 3 was one of those episodes where the writers said "Fuck it, lets just talk about that one time we got high in pre-production".

I grew up with B/W TV after getting colour and then High Def, why must we go back to B/W? The latest episode was not to bad. They explained why it was in B/W. I only had one problem with this one. ▼Spoiler What are the odds that the commander looked exactly like the Queen Rebel? Even facial rec could not tell the difference.
