And that fight-dance worked out better than I thought it could...

That being said, yes, season 3 is weaker than 1 and 2...

Pike looked like an out of control Chia Pet.

The Quiff has returned lol. When I first heard of it, I had to actually look it up. Sounded more like a female fart. But what do I know?

Re: Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

Episode 9...

an entire Episode about the least interesting character (imho) of the entire show? Great hmm

Spoiler

I had to check who the Metrons were, and from what you can find in the Memory Alpha wiki, isn't this basically just copy/pasted from a TOS episode?

After they got the transmission and "had to be certain" that it came from the other side, Uhura suggests they send probes to boost the signal.  Wouldn't that be the first thing to do?!

I don't like calling women "emotional" but damn, Uhura get a grip! I always thought Uhura is one of the strongest characters in Star Trek and of course, being emotional can be a sign of strength as well - but here it made the complete opposite impression on me.

Thats not really narrowing it down lol

Its a pretty fierce battle for that position, a lot of contenders!

My guess is its either
1.pilots brother
2.pilot or
3.number 2

I've just realized after 3 seasons  I only know 3 characters names lol Pike, Spook and Nurse...ummm Justine?

Maybe its only 2!

Re: Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

3x9 - ...so contrived I could barely get through it...

Spoiler

They can breathe on a moon in a debris field without an atmosphere?  They can survive toxic storms without a space suit?  Even a centipede requires vegetation and a life bearing planet to survive, which there wasn't.  Did the Metrons keep them alive just to see how they would interact?  I couldn't get passed the obvious throughout this episode to be interested in the search and rescue or the interaction with the Gorn, and why do another Gorn episode, aren't there more interesting aliens?

309

Re: Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

The latest episode kinda reminded me of Enemy Mine.

Spoiler

And I am getting tired of the Gorn. The Gorn have been in every season now. Also to have the Gorn and the Metrons together again, just reeks of sloppy writing. I also agree about Uhura and the wet almost crying look. This is starting to look more like Star Trek Discovery. @paisley1 Love your spoiler and agree %100. That asteroid wasn't big enough to support an atmosphere.

I thought so too at first, but

Spoiler

if the Metrons are capable of creating a wormhole - at least that's how i understood it - they are probably also able to create the atmosphere on that moon.

Honestly, when the Gorn showed up I thought everything that was happening was in her mind. Maybe dellusional or the Metrons could've pulled something like The Ancients did in Farscape when they first tested Crichton...which would've been much better smile

Exactly my thought as soon as that plot contrivance happened.

Spoiler
  • Why was the shuttle windows covered for 'gravimetric disturbances'?  Makes no sense. Felt like the pilot for Battlestar Galactica (1978) when Starbuck and Apollo had to clear the space minefield between the binary star system.

  • Crying Uhura is the new Crying Michael.

  • Really? - its that easy to fudge the data numbers that there's a slider on the UI on the PADD for it?

  • @pailsey1 is right about the size of the asteroid being too small for atmosphere.

  • Then we get to it having gravity to hold people down let alone drag in a shuttle.

  • It it evolved the big insect life despite going through the gas giant's toxic atmosphere every orbit? So... what... its hollow with an entire biosphere underground-and all the bugs exhale O² for generations to build that up?

  • Oh - And after the flare ignited the entire atmosphere and burned it away, there was still oxygen for them to breathe?  WTF?!

Speaking of Farscape, anyone else else think the re-imagined Gorn are just knock-off Scarrans?

Maybe in the looks department. But Tos had them way before farscape.

Re: Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

Season final...Episode 10...an episode of coincidences / conveniences hmm
I would say this is another SG1 episode...but that would be insulting to Stargate smile

Seriously though...

Spoiler

M'Benga did something when he was 12 years old which is now enscribed on the....nope, this makes my brain explode - what the f? This is the stupidest stuff I have heard all year - and there has been a lot.
At the absolute very least, instead of him just pulling that line out of his a$$, show a god damn flashback at the beginning of the episode or something like that. Unacceptable.

Ancient evil race, ancient good race who imprisoned them. Humans now have to fully solve the problem. Yeah, definitely Stargate smile
And for this to work Batel had to have been invested with Gorn, had the cure and so on....all of that so that this can happen. C.o.n.v.e.n.i.e.n.t.

On another note:
First they say that Skygowan engages in interstellar trade with the Orions and is mostly hostile towards the federation...but they have no problem with two Starfleet ships pointing a phaser on one of their temples?!
Nobody in the background even reacted to the phaser...no angry call from the local authority, no Orion ship showing up, nothing?
And they don't even try to talk to the locals to maybe get some information about the history of the portal, it's myth or anything...
This planet is filled with NPCs who's dialogue options have been turned off...

"That is the power of the earth's sun"
"A focused phaser blast of a starship could give you half of that"

What? Is a phaser really that strong?

Yes, the few minutes of "what might've been" were nicely done...but that's about it.

This last episode made the season go from 3/5 down to 2/5.

I really wanted to like this show, but they solve every problem, as you put it, too conveniently.

Yea, SG1 was guilty of this at times, but not to this degree IMO.

Re: Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

Season 1 and 2 are way better. WTH happened to the writers in 3? Or are we talking studio run interference?

318

Re: Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

What a disappointing end to a disappointing season.

Can Skydance just wipe all of Kurtzman trek from canon and start work on a new new Trek universe already.

I'd rather not get the final 2 seasons of SNW now, its a complete waste of time and hurts the franchise with its instant forgettability and mediocrity.

The thought of another 2 seasons of emotional Spock and his love triangle is killing me.

319

Re: Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

Yes, WilliamDrakeMcGregor, there's enough to complain about in 3x10...

Spoiler

Other shows did the "living out an alternative life" better IMHO, like https://next-episode.net/the-magicians and (to a lesser degree IIRC) https://next-episode.net/the-wheel-of-time for example...

...but I still found the episode enjoyable enough to watch. smile

Re: Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

Even with all of my complaining, I must admit, I rather have this Trek than none at all. We need more good science fiction Tv shows, Movies etc.

But I really would like to know what has changed from season 1 and 2. This season 3 cannot have been written by the same people. I just cannot see it.

Didn't the same happen with Star Trek: Discovery?
I enjoyed Season 1 and (to the greater part) Season 2 of that show as well. Then it went downhill fast.

I agree, both shows were better in their respective early seasons.  Was hoping they would go the way that Star Trek TNG did which started off poorly, and got better as it went on.  I would probably make the case that DS9 and Voyager also got better with time.

My argument is that while this is still in production, another, better ST show won't be made.

I'd be content if they got rid of the current writers and got decent ones to continue SNW for the next 2 seasons but I don't think thats going to happen, better to rip the band-aid off and start fresh imo.
