Topic: Ghosts (2021)

https://static.next-episode.net/tv-shows-images/huge/ghosts-2021.jpg

A struggling young couple's dreams come true when they inherit a beautiful house in the country, only to find out it's falling apart and haunted by the ghosts of previous residents.

I came across this show as I was looking for shows that star the delightful Rose McIver who was the zombie doctor who worked in the Coroners Office in IZombie for 5 seasons.  I also notice this show in end credits has an association with the BBC. It seems the show is a US remake of a 2019 3 season BBC show with almost identical characters. I have not seen the UK show but it seems to have got good reviews

Any way I have watched the first 6 eps of the 2021 US remake and sorry to say it is painful ( atleast at the moment, maybe rewatching will make it better) This seems to be a show the Americans just can not do & I do not think it has done Rose McIver   any good. She deserves better

Re: Ghosts (2021)

The UK show is really great.  Very funny.
This looks like a typical US remake where it's not funny and just sad.

Also, the US don't have buildings old enough for this!  smile

Yes, and I grew up in Europe, where the history comes from. Oh, yeah. You tear your history down, man! “30 years old, let's smash it to the floor and put a car park here!" I have seen it in stories. I sawsomething in a program on something in Miami, and they were saying, "We've redecorated this building to how it looked over 50 years ago!" And people were going, "No, surely not, no. No one was alive then!"

The mansion is fine in the 2021 remake its just the character acting. I want to cringe when I think of it.
It sounds like it would have been better for the BBC to sell the UK show to the US rather than the rights to make their own version

Re: Ghosts (2021)

I have watched a few eps of the UK version; well the US version is not that different. maybe the humour a bit more nuanced in the UK version but just not my cup of tea of silliness. I was hoping that as Rose McIver was one of the stars the show would have the quality of iZombie which is an excellent show that ran for 5 seasons ended acouple of years ago now. For any one not seen that show I suggest  you take a look

Rose McIver does a good job with what the show gives her to work with here on Ghosts. Admittedly she got a charm to her, similar to Lucy Hale [who's current on Ragdoll, incidentally]. That may be as it is, I however have not seen Rose in much. I liked her in the A Christmas Prince Universe of movies on NETFLIX, that and Woke are really all I know her from.

I hear she was the Yellow Ranger or something though.  cool

The UK version is quite different from the US version,

explain. not my impression. almost the same characters eg the scout with the arrow in his neck. I think I prefer the American version as Rose McIver makes it

I've watched all of the UK one and I like it.  I've only watched the first few minutes of episode one of the US one, which may not be enough, but I don't know if I'll bother.  Excuse the pun, but I don't think they've caught the spirit of it.  It felt a bit... off.  Maybe the comedy is too British?  It just didn't feel... right.

2020.  Meh.

hehe I dont like either of them. The "offness" you say is in the UK version also , just better concealed,  its the very idea of the show and the characters. The only bit I liked in both was the poor departed plague  victims in the basement. Fine humour in both cases.

I've watched all three series of the UK and the 10 Eps of the US that have been broadcast. I'm of the opinion that the UK has a more rounded cast of characters with smarter, faster paced and darker humor... just a all-around stronger program.

That being the case and though I am a huge fan of Charlotte Ritchie (she was amazing in Call the Midwife), there is just a charm to Rose McIver and the US adaptation seems to have built the bulk of this incarnation around that charm. Possibly to the detriment to the program, as it seems drawn attention from what in the UK is truly an ensemble, but I am willing to keep the US on my watch list... thought I guess we'll have see if CBS shares my casual amusement with the US version cool

Re: Ghosts (2021)

I'm still watching.

I think it's more watchable than most of the other sitcoms out there, but honestly that may just be because Rose McIver is there.

It's a show that if I don't have enough time to watch today, I'll watch it later and not feel like I missed out.

Agreed on the McIver of it all... but even she had a job of salvaging that last Ep.

Feels like the writers don't know what to do with all the elements they have... like sometimes they just jump from vignette to vignette with little real comedy while at the same time attempting to set up some larger universe. Very little of which the BBC One series had to do to be consistently hysterical.

Also, I'm not sure if it's COVID but several of the GHOSTS just disappear (no pun intended) for an episode or two just to reappear later... that's not a negative necessarily but more of a continuity assessment, as it's noticeable  hmm

It's still not half as good as the original UK version but it is settling into a decent flow... The guest-stars are a help, I can't recall the last time I saw Mark Linn-Baker or Rob Huebel... and Enrico Colantoni, what a treat!

I'd say the US show has gone from 2 STARs to almost 5 STARs, however that is 5 out of 10 STARs tongue Mayhaps it will keep climbing and for that I do hope!

FYI if any of y'all are UK GHOSTS fans HBOMAX dropped that series' 2021 Christmas Episode just a little while back!

There are some crossover characters like "arrow guy" but others are different; the comedy is also very different with the UK one being more subtle than the US version.
I enjoy both to be honest but the UK one is better IMO.

Re: Ghosts (2021)

^^ ... for me, that one is easy!
Ghosts UK:
Really good, minimal flaws - seen, enjoyed much, some seasons multiple times, clear recommendation, 4.5★

Ghosts US:
Trashy rubbish, why do people create these shows and invest money ?!?  maybe even CW would be ashamed (eh... or not^^)... Had a peek, fainted, OFF

... easy cool

Re: Ghosts (2021)

The main reason that the UK version is better, is that the majority of the ghost cast have been working together for years in the BBC educational series, Horrible Histories. Kids in the UK have grown up on this. I have a CD set that I have used in the history classroom. For example there were songs about the six wives of Henry the VIII, as well as many other examples to encourage to remember facts from history. It started in 2009, and kids from that era loved it. So those kids 10-15 years later, and the parents and teachers that watched it with their kids, loved it as well. The troupe has also won awards for British comedy. Although the UK version of 'Ghosts' ended for a very good reason, it will be missed. I won't give any spoilers...

I find the US version really corny. Especially the ghost power from Isaac which makes a fart smell when he walks through a living person.
