Topic: The Great

The Great is a genre bending, anti-historical romp through 18th Century Russia following the wildly comic rise of Catherine the Nothing to Catherine the Great.

The humour is a bit coarse and bawdy but Elle Fanning, who I had never heard of is a delight. The theme of the show is about Catherine wanting to instigate a coup and displace Peter the not-so-great who has the mind of a teenager and create a modern Russia. There is a Count Orlov who is a spitting image for Janzo from the Outpost but they are not the same actor

I'm not sure I'll watch the show (the trailer isn't bad but... I don't know), but what I find really impressive is how you could have missed everything Elle Fanning was in over the years! smile

well I know she had part in Maleficent and that strange scifi How To Talk To Girls At Parties ( which I have on dvd) and a very very young in Super 8 but she hadnt really registered as some one. None of the other films I know. I dont watch many films these days more a tv series person ( and there are so many of them these days). I only got round to watching Harry Potter last year when the blu rays got cheap 2nd hand.

The Great is a funny series with nice locations as long you are not sophisticated high brow type. Huzzah!

Re: The Great

I have been thinking what best way to describe the show. Bawdy comes to mind. except .......

Spoiler

But eps 10 the last of season 1 is anything but bawdy fun & is very dramatic & dark and Catherine pays the price for power. Great episode well worth waiting for

Re: The Great

well season 2 is here. I have watched the first 2 eps with scintilating fast dialogue by turns coarse and clever with lavish sets and costumes.

Spoiler

The detail  of her gown when she is crowned Catherine the Great is beyond belief.

This is a really Great show and Elle Fanning carries off the  main role as if it was made for her. And the great thing you don't need to wait each week for the next episode, all 10 are there. This is how it should be done

Re: The Great

I see season 3 to start in a couple of weeks. A good show at last to watch

Re: The Great

i totally dont get this show, all the extra bits but yet anti-realist. Why bother with that kind of setting? :s

it is the excellent performances by all, the repartee. It reminds me somewhat of the bawdy British films of the 60's, but far superior. also reminds me of the Hogarth satirical engravings of the C18 but without the judgemental attitude

Gin Lane shows its citizens consumed by the evils of overindulgence – in the foreground, a gin-addled mother lets her child fall to its death, while an emaciated and inebriated ballad-seller ironically peddles pamphlets entitled ‘The Downfall of Mrs. Gin.’

Noon, depicts the culture clash between the capital’s upper and lower echelons of society — on the right hand side of the work, the elegant French Huguenots exit a church outfitted in high fashion, and across the street, a group of English folk cavort outside a pie shop.

I didn't get it either; it's obviously not supposed to be a historical drama, but if it's supposed to be a comedy drama, I couldn't find the comedy after watching the first thee episodes.

No matter, we can't all like the same shows but interested what it is trying to be?

An irreverent attitude to history & its characters is the comedy. If you see portaits of historical  figures they are so serious as if they knew they were making history, a breed apart. What shows like this do is to knock them off their pedestals and as Billy Butcher would say show them to be  no different to c***s like you or me

Re: The Great

season 3. Well I have watched the first two eps and some thing is missing. It misfires. I am starting to think they should have ended it at Season 2 as the last eps was great. We will see if it manages to pull off a good season 3

Re: The Great

well by eps7/8 it takes on a VERY DARK TURN and Elle Fanning puts in an ASTONISHING PERFORMANCE
Worthy of an award.

Re: The Great

I wonder whether the series is now over. I think it is as the way it ended leaves very little more to say. Then so did season 2. Any way unlike some series the writers have done a good job not ending in a sentimental get together ( you know what I am referring to) but Catherine rising to her full stature
