3x9 - I can't believe it's already 3x9, time flies.  Probably the most gruesome and weakest episode of the season, but with the biggest special effects so far, oddly this felt like Star Wars, but it should technically feel the other way round.

Nice screens!

Spoiler

Dem will connect with the head and it will initiate a software update that clears what the Cleons did to her. She mentioned when talking about the laws of robotics (a core thing in all Issac Asimov books). That the 0th law was added by software updates during the robot communion thing they do. Your last screen with Dem/Kalle I'm pretty sure is establishing that Kalle is some kind of artificial intelligence, or... possibly Kalle was a robot who encoded herself into the radiant. So far the only 5 beings we've seen who can understand Seldon's math were Seldon, Seldon's 'lifemate' Yara, Gale, Kalle, and Dem who is a robot. Given the timeframe of when they mentioned Kalle's proof was created, it's entirely possible she's a robot who avoided the purge.

Don't jinx it. I have seen series get renewed and cancelled the same day.

It used to be, that renewed was a guarantee, short of main cast dying that you would get another season.

Recently: Dexter: Origins
Historically: Farscape.  It was renewed for a season 4 & 5.  Then SciFi channel pulled some shyte on their final day to exercise some option.  I was back stage at the Chicago Farscape convention when the news broke on the SciFi channel live web chat.  I asked Lani if they new early enough to end the show neatly or not.  And he just said:

What?  They what?

And I said: "They just had a live web chat and Brian {Henson} just let everyone know. Its not a secret now. I wasn't asking you *how* it ends, just wondering if you had enough notice to not leave it a cliff hanger." {Later we all learned it was a doozey}
Apparently they broke the news to the world without getting ahold of all the cast members first.  Who does that?  I felt like a total arse for breaking it to Lani like that - but to be fair I never would have imagined it going down like that.  He just looked at me and said

Well... I guess that's it then.

If they lower the budget, they are simply shooting themselves in the foot. This series has progressively gotten better, in acting, special effects etc.

Now is not the time to do more with less. It is time to truly shine.

I couldn't agree with you more.  But what I think doesn't matter.
But consider The Wheel of Time, that show was getting better every season also, and after 3 seasons, just like Foundation, after some reported consideration at continuing with a lower budget, decided to cancel the show.

I don't know about you, but I would rather see it continue with a lower budget than get canceled.
On the other hand, will the show be worth watching in the future?  If the showrunner is quitting because he couldn't imagine a quality show going forward, it could start a domino effect whereby others leave the show for the same reason.  While I would like to think better writing, better stories and such could keep the show viable, its probably unlikely.

This is not made up tv. The books have already been written. The characters developed. I do not know what it takes to put a book to film, but theoretically it should be cheaper to make then a story from scratch.

And putting more money into a good show, will not only land you more viewers, but also enhance the story. If it is done right.

I am tired of the Do more with less mantra. The only asshats that spout this are already rich.

While its true the original material already exists, there are both good and bad ways to translate the original book material into a show. The premier gripe with Wheel of Time is that the story and characters were translated poorly.

That said, my point is that the new showrunner, who ever that turns out to be, for Foundation could dedicate themself to offering an excellent translation from the original books, which could make up for budget cuts to the show.

For me, I value good writing and storytelling over good effects every time.

265

Re: Foundation [Drama, Sci-Fi]

Indeed. You cannot replace good writing with flashy CGI.

I have watched stuff, that was more cerebral than flashy. And they were still great shows. The dialogue, the tension between characters etc. You do not always require high paid, well known actors, or a 200 million CGI budget.

The Man from Earth (2007). I caught it by accident and when it was done I was flabbergasted.

But sometimes I just want to be entertained without having to think like a physics professor.

Thats when I turn to Christmas Vacation etc. etc.

As long as this show continues, I will watch it. The truth will come if 20 years from now I can still enjoy it and it holds up.

Re: Foundation [Drama, Sci-Fi]

I'm letting this be a 10/10 show for me. Are there some problems? Sure. But I'm pretty much in love with this show. Which is why I'm pretty poleaxed to see some news about how it was originally slated for 8 seasons and we may only be getting 6 now. Massive frowny face to that news.

Do I wish the show was longer? Sure.

I'm also happy y'all are caught up now, cause...

Spoiler

as a book reader it was pretty hard not to spoil the twist with the Mule. I must say though they've changed a LOT from the books, the Cleon's weren't really a thing and Lee Pace and the others honestly have made it a real treat. Dawn was rough at first but I think he's finding his acting chops and is showing some serious improvement. SO this entire time I've been trying to guess who the Mule was. In the books it was Magnifico Giganticus the musician. But that made zero sense since he was with main characters for too long who weren't turned. When it was revealed Bayta's dude wasn't turned I was like... okay what is going on here. So, they managed to get me too. Seriously though Lee Pace is an actor I'mma follow the man is a captivating actor and really commands the screen when he's on. I look forward to seeing him in other roles.

All that said, Gale has always been the roughest point of the shows with me. She's getting better, I just don't buy her as the protagonist. That last episode definitely could have been split into a two parter.

But other than that really no complaints at all. It is immensely satisfying to see such an important piece of Sci-Fi literature get it's time on the screen. If you love Sci-Fi, robots, androids, cyborgs, AI, cyrosleep, and a myriad of other Sci-Fi concepts, this is it. This is where it all came from. Issac Asimov is the brain that thought of all of it. The original. He is the Tolkein equivalent of Elves, Trolls, Orcs, Dwarves, and Halflings, as in without him, we might not have it, or have had it for some time. It really is a crying shame so little of his stuff has been adapted yet, cause Foundation is the tip of the Iceberg. Between all his short stories and books there is an untapped goldmine of hundreds of Sci-Fi stories, and if you thought the Mule twist was good. Yeah.

After Wheel of Time, The Witcher, and Altered Carbon got botched all to hell on the silver screen I was about to stop watching shows based on books I liked until I heard if they were good or not. Murderbot and this have given me hope that it can be done right.

Re: Foundation [Drama, Sci-Fi]

Its a real shame so many adaptations have been botched, agreed.  Additionally, it probably means it will be 20 years before a 2nd attempt is made to do them correctly.  Which for older folks such as my self, I will never see them done right sad

Some of those IPs like Wheel of Time have some pretty large price tags associated with it. And that show had a pretty nice sized starting audience due to the book readers so I think they know we're interested in it. In fact most of those shows had exactly that. High starting audiences, but when the show started diverging from the books and what was cut and what was added started to increasingly piss off existing fans of the shows. Plus the changes actually did suck from a narrative perspective so they lost fans due to obscuring story line.

I'm holding out hope for a Wheel of Time animated version. Studios are increasingly investing in animation, and animators assisted with AI have already cut production times on a lot of that. Cause you can feed a lot of AI images and it can do limited runs of animation ~ a few seconds at a time, up until Google's new big boy Genie 3 which can do whole minutes of uninterrupted live video of animation and live video.

So now animators can draw their original content, characters, and storyboard frames, they can do a few frames spread apart in time, and use AI to fill in the gaps, then go back frame by frame and make sure there are no AI shenanigans going on. THIS has already massively reduced animation times for studios who use it, and as the tech gets better... Genie 3 being a massive step forward in just the last month, we're gonna see shorter and shorter times between shows that are animated, and even maybe some live action here in the future that's all AI.

And that's gonna be neat, really neat. https://x.com/OfficialLoganK/status/1952732206176112915

That's what it can really do.

So I'd say hold out hope. These IPs cost a toooon of money. They really shelled for Wheel of Time. I don't think the powers that be are happy that it wasn't the new Game of Thrones and there's still a massive fantasy gap. We could see more of it soon. And that's true of all IPs, companies are gonna wanna milk those for all they're worth. We've got a new Witcher video game coming out that looks very good. So that's gonna remain popular.

272

Re: Foundation [Drama, Sci-Fi]

Instilling hope is never a bad thing.

WoT time could have been the next GoT if they had done it right.

As for animation, it depends.  Star Wars: The Bad Batch is an example of animation I can watch, but if it looks like 1970's cartoons, no thanks.

Re: Foundation [Drama, Sci-Fi]

I just re-watched all 3 seasons of Foundation.

Holy crap did I miss a lot. I am not designed to sit on my ass for a whole week and catch the next episode. And then after watching 10 episodes having to wait a year + to see the next season.

But man, these guys make Star Wars and the death star look like a toy. When you get into the the destruction of entire planets, without the use of a huge moon sized station. Just wow.

And the plot beneath plot beneath plot, its hard to keep track. Especially when you are watching other shows to boot.

This is my new eye candy for now. What a show.

I always do a full watch of previous seasons before shows start airing to catch myself up, and do a post-watch full run again after a lot of times on shows I really enjoy. Like this one.

The show is pure eye candy, you're absolutely right. I love the moving paint stuff and the opening animations a lot. And a lot of the ships and buildings have really scratched my itch for seeing cool stuff like that. The ship with the open to space walkway at the beginning with nothing but shields to keep emperor safe was... *chef's kiss*. So cool. God I can't wait for season 4. This is gonna be a hard one to be waiting for. Hopefully I'm still around for season 4.

Re: Foundation [Drama, Sci-Fi]

Also, on the topic of AI and it's use in shows like Foundation. There is a virtually 100% chance that AI played at least part of a hand in the process of script generation, visual model production, and even final video generation this season. These practices are already in play for major shows. With a heavy human hand for correction of course for each step, but that'll lessen as time goes on.

I look forward to the day where you can feed any book into an AI model, select what actors you want to see play the roles, and generate your own custom shows that have production quality which match TV shows of today. There's a good chance I see that before I die.
